You can make a 3D fossil model from photographs with close-range photogrammetry: take overlapping pictures from different camera positions, reconstruct them in photogrammetry software, then add and check a known scale if you need real-world measurements. The model can represent only surfaces the photos show clearly, so plan the capture around the fossil’s condition and the model’s intended use.
What you need before you start
Photogrammetry estimates three-dimensional geometry by matching details shared across images taken from different viewpoints. A single photograph is only a two-dimensional projection; it cannot provide the full depth of a fossil. The National Park Service describes structure-from-motion photogrammetry as a way to digitally document fossil surface details, including body fossils such as bones and teeth and trace fossils such as tracks, burrows, and impressions: NPS: Photogrammetry—Fossils in 3D.

Decide what you need the model to do. A shareable visual model may need enough coverage to look convincing from its intended viewing angles. A measurement or fabrication model needs a known scale, adequate coverage of relevant surfaces, and a careful check of the reconstructed geometry. Neither a polished texture nor a lifelike appearance by itself establishes measurement accuracy.
Respect the specimen and its setting
Before moving or turning a fossil, get permission from the collection manager or site authority. The National Park Service warns that some specimens are fragile enough for minor handling to cause irreparable damage, and notes that digital models can help share valuable objects without risking the originals: NPS: Bringing Fossils into the Digital Age (2018). Photograph a track, slab, or other in-place fossil where it lies when safe and authorized; do not disturb the site or attach markers to the specimen. If it is too fragile to handle, use an authorized replica or capture it in place.

Choose a capture setup
A phone or camera that can produce sharp, detailed images may be enough; the cited fossil guide does not require a particular camera. For a small, stable specimen that may safely be moved, a clean support and rotating platform can make a sequence easier. The Digital Atlas of Ancient Life demonstrates a black background, multiple desk lamps, a marked turntable, and additional camera angles; these are examples rather than mandatory equipment. If the specimen must stay still, move the camera around it instead.
Photograph the fossil from overlapping angles
- Set up even light. Use diffuse, consistent illumination where practical, and move lamps to reduce hard shadows and dark crevices. Keep the fossil in sharp focus and make its surface texture visible. Avoid changing focus, zoom, or exposure during a series if doing so makes neighboring images inconsistent.
- Capture a ring of views. Photograph around the specimen from one camera height, keeping enough shared detail between neighboring frames for the software to match them. A photo taken approximately every 10 degrees of turntable rotation is a starting example in the Digital Atlas of Ancient Life’s step-by-step fossil photogrammetry guide (guide version 1.1, updated August 20, 2019), not a universal rule.
- Repeat from different heights or orientations. Raise or lower the camera and photograph another overlapping series so the sides and upper surfaces appear from multiple angles. The guide suggests repeating from three or four angle sets, or continuing until surfaces have been captured from more than one angle.
- Plan for hidden faces. A turntable series cannot capture a surface resting against the support. Photograph the underside only if the fossil can be safely repositioned or another authorized setup makes it visible. No software can recover a concealed face or internal anatomy from photographs that never show it.
Overlap is essential: adjacent pictures need common visible features for image matching. If a glossy, uniformly colored, transparent, very dark, or heavily shadowed area lacks useful detail, reconstruction may be more difficult; the cited sources do not quantify failure rates for particular fossil materials. Improve lighting or capture additional views when safe rather than assuming software can fill in missing geometry.

Reconstruct the photographs in software
Import the image set into a photogrammetry application and run its alignment and reconstruction workflow. The software estimates camera positions from shared image details and builds a 3D representation of the photographed surface. Check the current documentation for the application you choose because interface steps and hardware requirements can change.

| Software | What the cited source establishes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Meshroom | AliceVision describes Meshroom as a free, open-source 3D reconstruction application and lists version 2025.1.0 on its official page at the time of the cited research. | AliceVision recommends a CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPU for full use of the current binary; without a supported GPU, use is limited to Draft Meshing. |
| Agisoft Metashape | Agisoft describes Metashape as software that processes digital images into spatial data, including for cultural heritage documentation and indirect measurement. | The cited product page does not establish a current price or specific hardware requirement. |
When reconstruction finishes, inspect the model rather than judging it by its texture alone. Look for missing surfaces, holes, distorted edges, floating geometry from the background, and texture that does not sit correctly on the mesh. If a region failed because too few photographs show it, take more photographs with better overlap when it is safe and permitted.

Add scale if you need real-world dimensions
A reconstructed model may have arbitrary size. For dimensional use, include a known reference distance in enough photographs for the software to use it, then enter that distance with the application’s scale or reference tools. Agisoft’s older PhotoScan tutorial explains the use of a reference distance when ground-control-point data is unavailable and notes that marker-based georeferencing is usually more precise: Agisoft PhotoScan Pro 1.1 volume measurement tutorial. Its interface directions are for an older version and should not be treated as current menu instructions.
A ruler visible in an image may help viewers understand the fossil’s approximate size, but its presence alone does not calibrate the 3D model. If you publish dimensions, state how the model was scaled and checked. Preserve the original photographs if the model may be used for research or reprocessed later.

What the finished model can—and cannot—show
- It can document photographed surface detail. The NPS describes fossil photogrammetry as useful for digital documentation and sharing, including body and trace fossils: NPS: Photogrammetry—Fossils in 3D.
- It cannot reveal unseen surfaces or internal structure. Those features remain unknown unless they are captured by another suitable method or shown in the photographs.
- It is not automatically a scientific measurement. Scale, image coverage, and reconstruction quality all need to be checked before making dimensional claims.
- It does not replace records or permission. A model does not establish a fossil’s provenance or supersede collection documentation and handling requirements.
