To bring a 24/7 YouTube study stream back after a reboot, configure three separate things: make the media repeat, start the encoder when the computer boots, and make sure YouTube will still accept a reconnect to the broadcast. OBS can loop a file or playlist and can automatically reconnect after a dropped connection, but those settings alone do not launch OBS after a reboot or establish that playback will resume at the exact item and timestamp. Test that behavior on your own setup.
What “resume after a reboot” actually involves
A reboot closes the encoder and interrupts its connection to YouTube. A loop setting controls what happens when media reaches the end; automatic reconnect handles some connection failures while the encoder is running. Neither is a boot-time startup mechanism, and neither proves that a playlist will preserve its previous position after a restart.
- Media playback: loop one file or a playlist.
- Encoder startup: arrange for OBS or another encoder to launch after the machine boots.
- YouTube broadcast: check whether the existing broadcast remains eligible to accept a reconnect.
OBS’s media-source documentation covers looping and playlist behavior; its overview describes automatic reconnect as a configurable option. The cited documentation does not establish exact playlist-position persistence across a reboot. OBS Media Sources (dated January 11, 2022) and the OBS Overview Guide (dated August 25, 2021) describe these features separately.
Set up looping in OBS
For one study video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will be on air.
- Select the video file and enable Loop.
- Keep the source visible when you switch scenes, or check its visibility behavior. OBS documents options that can make a source continue, pause, or stop when it is not visible.
- Confirm that the file is stored at a path the computer can still access after restarting.
For a playlist of several files
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the media files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat. OBS documents shuffle as off by default; set the order you want rather than assuming it will be randomized.
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS documents that the VLC source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior and confirm every playlist file remains available at its configured path after boot.
These settings repeat the media while the source is running. They do not determine whether OBS starts at boot or whether the playlist restarts at the first item, resumes its previous item, or returns to a previous timestamp after a reboot. Verify those outcomes in a controlled test. See OBS’s media-source documentation for the documented source options.

Make the encoder start after the computer reboots
Desktop OBS
Use your operating system’s application startup facility to launch OBS after boot, then validate the behavior on that computer. The cited OBS documentation does not give a complete, operating-system-specific procedure for configuring OBS to start after a reboot. Check that the account used at startup can access the media files and that OBS opens the intended scene and stream configuration.
Headless Linux with FFmpeg
A service manager such as systemd can start an encoder as a managed service rather than relying on a desktop user opening an application. A public FFmpeg project documents one Linux pattern for running FFmpeg under systemd and resuming a nonterminal event after a host reboot. That is an implementation-specific example, not a universal OBS recipe, and it does not establish that every playlist will retain its previous cursor position. See the project reference for its particular implementation.

Choose an approach that fits how the stream is operated: OBS offers a visual scene workflow; a service-managed encoder can be configured to start as a system service. Neither approach removes the need to verify media order and position after restart, handle YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle, and monitor the machine.
Configure reconnects and check YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle
In OBS, enable automatic reconnect for transient connection failures. This is useful when OBS remains open but loses its connection; it is not a substitute for starting the encoder after a reboot. The OBS Overview Guide describes automatic reconnect as an advanced setting without promising reboot recovery.

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the current broadcast schedule and auto-start/auto-stop controls for the channel and event. The OBS community guide says that auto-stop disables the possibility of reconnecting later to continue that same broadcast without scheduling a new one. Because platform controls and behavior can change, check the current settings for your stream rather than assuming a restarted encoder will rejoin the same broadcast. The OBS forum guide discusses YouTube auto-start and auto-stop; it is older community documentation, not a current platform guarantee.
YouTube’s HLS documentation covers ingest requirements for HLS streams, including transport and segment requirements and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are protocol-specific ingest requirements, not a way to restore local OBS playlist state. Most OBS users should select the YouTube service integration or the stream settings for their chosen protocol and follow the current Live Control Room setup. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation if you are actually using HLS.

Test a reboot before relying on the stream unattended
- Set up the loop or playlist and boot-time encoder startup.
- Use a scheduled, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test broadcast and monitor both the OBS preview and YouTube output.
- Reboot the machine under controlled conditions.
- Check whether the encoder starts, whether the media plays, which playlist item and position it uses, and whether YouTube accepts the connection to the intended broadcast.
- Record the observed behavior for your configuration. The documented features do not settle these reboot outcomes universally.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open after reboot | Boot-time application startup | Check the operating system’s startup configuration and confirm the intended account can launch OBS. Automatic reconnect does not start a closed application. |
| The VLC playlist source is unavailable | VLC installation or architecture | Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS architecture; OBS documents a 64-bit VLC requirement for 64-bit OBS. |
| Media is missing or fails to play | File access and paths | Check that the files remain available at their configured paths after startup and that the startup account has access. |
| Playback stops when changing scenes | Source visibility behavior | Check whether the source is configured to continue, pause, or stop when hidden, and adjust the behavior to suit the scene workflow. |
| The broadcast does not accept the encoder after restart | YouTube broadcast lifecycle | Review the current event and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. If the broadcast has ended, a new scheduled broadcast may be required. |
| The stream returns, but the playlist starts in an unexpected place | Position persistence | Test and document the result for the specific encoder and playlist. The cited OBS feature descriptions do not promise restoration of the previous item or timestamp after reboot. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube study stream that keeps playing without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Its automatic recovery is designed to resume if YouTube drops the stream.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
