Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In OBS Studio, enable Settings > Advanced > Automatic Reconnect, then test the full path from OBS to YouTube’s Live Control Room. OBS can retry its connection to YouTube, but that alone cannot guarantee the YouTube event stays live, restore a failed camera or other source, or recover an event that has ended.
What reconnecting does—and what it does not
A 24/7 YouTube stream depends on three separate parts: the encoder and its source (for example, OBS and a webcam), the network connection from the encoder to YouTube’s ingest servers, and the YouTube live event. Automatic reconnect addresses the encoder’s output connection. It does not prove that the event remains live or that the camera, audio, or other source has recovered.

YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a universal outage duration after which an event will end, nor promise that an event will resume after every interruption. Treat the actual behavior of your setup as something to test, not assume.
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
- Open OBS settings. In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Advanced.
- Confirm Automatic Reconnect is enabled. OBS documents this control in its overview guide. The exact interface can shift between OBS releases and platforms.
- Set a retry budget. OBS’s output API describes a maximum retry count and a starting wait duration; the wait doubles on successive retries. Choose a retry count and delay that suit the outages you expect. No single retry count is right for every connection or deployment.
- Apply the settings and verify them in a test. Do not assume retries are working simply because the option is enabled; observe OBS and YouTube during a controlled interruption.
OBS retries its output connection to the configured destination. A successful retry is not the same as confirmation that the intended YouTube event is still live.

Verify the YouTube event and encoder destination
- In YouTube Studio, open the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- Check that the encoder’s stream URL and stream key match the destination shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed; keep it private, like a password.
- Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if you use them. YouTube documents what those controls do, but does not describe them as a guarantee that a previously ended event will recover after an outage.
- After a disconnect, check the Live Control Room rather than relying only on OBS’s status. If the event has ended, follow your intended event workflow to start a stream again.
See YouTube’s guides to live stream settings and creating a live stream with an encoder.
Test before leaving a stream unattended
- Use representative video motion and audio, not just a static test screen. Confirm the camera or media source is working as well as the encoder output.
- Check that the upload bitrate fits the connection you will actually use. YouTube recommends testing the setup before an event and monitoring stream health while it runs; its encoder settings and bitrate guidance explains the relevant settings.
- With the stream running, briefly interrupt the network connection in a controlled way. Watch OBS for reconnect attempts and watch YouTube’s Live Control Room for the event’s state and stream health.
- Restore the connection and confirm both the feed and source recover. Repeat with a longer interruption if that is a realistic risk for your location, while recognizing that no test proves every future outage will behave identically.
Troubleshoot interruptions that keep happening
- OBS reports dropped frames: OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Test a bitrate appropriate to the available upload bandwidth.
- You are using Wi-Fi: OBS recommends a wired network where practical. A wired connection can remove one local wireless link from the path, but it cannot fix an ISP or upstream outage.
- The connection still fails on a wired network: Check the modem, router, and other network hardware, then investigate whether the wider connection is unstable. Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve it.
- OBS reconnects but YouTube is no longer live: Check the Live Control Room. OBS’s retry does not guarantee that the same event remains open; use the event workflow you intend for a stream that has ended.
- The stream returns but the picture or sound is missing: Check the camera, capture device, audio input, and OBS source status. Output reconnection cannot repair a source that has stopped producing media.
- OBS cannot send to YouTube after reconnecting: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS against the intended YouTube event. Correct a mismatch, and keep the key confidential.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames and network checks. Its overview guide documents automatic reconnect, while the output API reference describes retry-count and increasing-delay behavior.

Choose a remedy for the failure you have
Match the fix to the part that failed. A local OBS or source failure calls for checking the computer and source; an unstable home network calls for network troubleshooting; a failed primary internet path may call for a compatible backup connection; and an ended YouTube event requires checking the event workflow. A cellular failover router is relevant only if your carrier has suitable coverage and the router supports failover as configured. Verify both before relying on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYouTube’s encoder guidance also lists cloud-based tools for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. Hosting playback in the cloud can reduce dependence on a home computer and connection, but that guidance does not establish a particular outage guarantee. It is a different approach from reconnecting a live webcam feed: a prerecorded-video service plays uploaded material rather than restoring a failed camera.
