The practical catch: YouTube may not archive a live stream that runs longer than 12 hours, and a continuous loop does not guarantee monetization. This guide covers a do-it-yourself workflow and a cloud alternative.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel in good standing for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A program you can legally use. Prepare lake footage and ambient audio you recorded yourself, or material for which you have the necessary rights. Keep permission records and license terms.
- An encoder and a computer that can stay on. OBS is a free software option; its help portal provides setup guidance and points to its Auto Configuration Wizard. YouTube also supports encoder-based streams using external equipment such as microphones and preamps.
- A continuity and archive plan. A local encoder depends on the machine’s power and internet connection. YouTube’s archive guidance warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
How to make a 24/7 YouTube stream
1. Capture or assemble the lake program
Use original footage and recordings where possible. For a natural ambience stream, consider whether the image has enough visual interest to sustain a long viewing session and whether the sound remains comfortable and consistent. If you record outdoors, check applicable access rules and permissions for the place where you record. Do not assume that audio or video found online is free to rebroadcast.

If you use licensed third-party material, retain the license and confirm that it covers live streaming on YouTube. A license may not by itself prevent an interruption: YouTube advises creators to ask the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
2. Prepare the encoder and repeatable program
- Install OBS from the OBS Project help portal and use its Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point for basic settings.
- Add your video and audio sources to a scene. Set up the program so the media repeats as intended, and listen for gaps, sudden volume changes, or abrupt transitions. The exact looping controls depend on how your media is arranged; test the finished arrangement rather than assuming it will repeat correctly.
- In YouTube’s live control room, create or select an encoder stream and use its stream settings in the encoder to connect. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password. Never show it in screenshots, public notes, or a live scene.
- For resolution, bitrate, and other encoder values, use YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen output and the capacity of your upload connection. The applicable values depend on the resolution and frame rate you choose; do not raise them beyond what your connection can sustain.
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing before going live and checking stream health. The linked settings page is available through a proxy mirror.

3. Test the actual sound and motion
- Run a representative segment through the complete setup, including the audio and video you intend to stream.
- Check that the image is visible, the audio is present, and levels are comfortable rather than startling or distorted.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and resolve warnings before relying on the setup for a long run.
- Confirm that your program repeats cleanly and that the encoder remains connected during the test.
4. Go live and plan for the machine to remain available
Start the encoder feed and confirm that YouTube is receiving it before treating the stream as live. A locally run encoder requires the computer, power, and network connection to remain available. Decide how you will notice a disconnection and restart the encoder; a 24/7 goal is not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
5. Handle archives as separate recordings
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” For an around-the-clock stream, plan short segments or restarts and make a local recording if you need a dependable copy. See YouTube’s archive guidance; do not assume a single continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive.

Rights: can I use recorded loon calls?
Yes, if you recorded the calls yourself and have the necessary rights to use the recording, or if you have permission or a license that covers your use. Keep the supporting documentation. A recording’s presence online is not permission to rebroadcast it, and local rules may apply to recording in particular places.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. If you have a license, ask the rights holder whether they will add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its livestream terms and conditions, which require creators to represent that they have the necessary rights and to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Can a continuous ambient loop earn money?
Not automatically. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams, and monetization depends on channel acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), compliance with policy, and the applicable monetization module. The policy calls for original, authentic content and says generic, repetitive, or mass-produced material may not qualify. Its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material was already ineligible. A long runtime or a single looping scene does not assure YPP approval or advertising revenue.
Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies, how to earn money on YouTube, and the available monetization options. Make the stream distinct and genuinely yours rather than relying on duration as a monetization strategy.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the selected stream settings and stream key match, then confirm that the encoder is connected. Keep the key private; replace it if you have exposed it.
- The stream has no sound or the level is uncomfortable: Check the selected audio source and its level in the encoder, then test the actual program before returning live.
- YouTube flags third-party content: Stop using material unless you can establish your rights. If licensed, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license does not necessarily prevent an automated live interruption.
- The stream ends when you expect it to continue: Check computer power, internet availability, and whether the encoder is still running. Local streaming depends on all three.
- A long stream has no complete archive: This can happen when a stream exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. Keep a local recording and use planned segments or restarts when an archive matters.
- The stream runs but monetization is unavailable: Check YPP eligibility, policy compliance, and the applicable monetization module. Continuous playback alone does not establish eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is three steps: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded program in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
