Choose how to send the program to YouTube
YouTube supports streaming from a computer webcam and streaming with an encoder. For a prepared ambient program with a fixed visual, an encoder is the more natural fit because it sends a composed audio-and-video feed. Webcam streaming is a simpler computer-based route when you want to stream directly from a webcam setup. Which is practical depends on your existing equipment and how much control you need; the platform guidance does not establish performance rankings for particular devices.
YouTube represents the viewer-facing event as a broadcast and the audio-video feed as a separate stream resource. Its Live Streaming API documentation describes an ongoing 24/7 broadcast, but that is a platform model, not a beginner’s recipe for looping a video file. You still need a playback-and-encoding setup that supplies your prepared program continuously.

How to make the 24/7 livestream
- Check eligibility. Verify your channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. YouTube says livestreamers must be at least 16. If the channel is not eligible, resolve that before planning a continuous broadcast.
- Prepare a continuous program. Assemble the cleared audio and visual into the material your playback setup will send. Check that it can continue without an accidental end or gap. The platform sources do not establish a particular looping application or file format, so use the current documentation for your chosen playback and encoder software.
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, set up a livestream and use the encoder option for a produced feed. Follow the current Studio prompts to create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key. Interface labels and controls can change, so use the live controls shown for your channel rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Configure the encoder from current guidance. Enter the stream key in your chosen encoder and select settings supported by both that encoder and YouTube’s current recommendations. Confirm resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval in the current YouTube Studio guidance and the encoder’s own documentation before publishing. The available sources do not verify a specific preset, numerical bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, or computer specification; do not treat an unverified value as a universal requirement.
- Start and inspect the live output. Start the encoder, then check the YouTube live preview and stream-health indicators before sharing the link. Listen for continuous audio and verify that the intended visual is present. Keep an eye on the output after it begins; a broadcast that has started is not proof that its sound, picture, or connection will remain healthy.
- Plan for continuity and archiving. Decide whether uninterrupted availability or a preserved replay matters more for this channel. What equipment do you need?
You need a channel that is eligible to livestream, a prepared audio-and-visual program, and a way to send it to YouTube. A dedicated mini PC can be convenient if you want a separate host for continuous encoding, but YouTube does not require one. Will a 24/7 livestream be archived, and do its watch hours count?
Do not assume that YouTube will preserve an entire uninterrupted day as one replay. Archive status matters for watch hours. In a YouTube Official Blog post published August 12, 2026, Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie said qualifying watch hours must come from public long-form videos, including podcasts, or archived livestreams. Livestreams that are not archived do not qualify under that explanation. This does not guarantee acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program.
Make the stream original, not just long
Continuous runtime by itself does not make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content,” which is ineligible. Treat the stream as a deliberate production: use material you have rights to, make the content genuinely your own, and do not assume that a long loop is a shortcut to monetization. Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a livestream: check channel verification, any live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days, and the age requirement. YouTube says livestreamers must be at least 16.
- The encoder does not connect: check that you used the current stream key for the intended broadcast and that the encoder settings follow the current YouTube and encoder documentation. Avoid reusing an old key without confirming it is still the one shown for the broadcast.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder: review YouTube’s third-party-content notices and identify any matched audio or visual. Confirm that your license covers live use and, for Content ID-registered media, ask the rights owner about channel allowlisting.
- The stream is live but the ambience has gaps or stops: inspect the playback source and encoder, then verify audio continuity in YouTube’s live output. A live status alone does not confirm uninterrupted playback.
- You expected a full-day replay or watch hours: check whether the stream was archived and review the current Studio archive controls. Under YouTube’s August 12, 2026 watch-hour explanation, non-archived livestreams do not contribute qualifying watch hours.
