To alternate lofi and ambient music on one continuous YouTube Live radio stream, schedule the change in the playback or encoder layer—not by switching between ordinary YouTube playlists. With OBS, prepare a separate scene or playback state for each set, automate the switch, and test the handoff while OBS keeps sending the same live broadcast. If you want playback to continue without a home computer running, a cloud playout service is another option.
How playlist switching works on a continuous YouTube stream
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder or playout service. The system producing that feed must decide which audio and visuals are playing; creating two regular YouTube playlists does not schedule a change within an already-running live broadcast. For a lofi-to-ambient rotation, set up two identifiable playback states—such as an OBS scene for lofi and one for ambient—and have your local automation or cloud playout change between them. The encoder can stay connected to the same YouTube live broadcast during those changes. The exact automation method depends on your software and configuration.

YouTube Help states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help before planning an unattended launch.

Clear the music and visuals
Use tracks and artwork you have permission to broadcast. A track being available online, labeled “lofi,” or included in a playlist does not establish that you have the necessary rights. YouTube says livestreams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Its monetization policies also apply to live streams; they expect original and authentic work, disallow monetization for repetitive or mass-produced content, and assess reused content at channel level. A loop or a lofi/ambient format alone does not establish monetization eligibility. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Design the schedule
- Decide whether lofi and ambient alternate at fixed times, after a playlist ends, or through another trigger your playout system supports.
- Keep the two sets clearly named and separate so the intended state is easy to identify.
- Choose whether visuals change with the music or remain consistent across both blocks.
- Test the full handoff, including the final item in each playlist, before relying on unattended operation.
Set up local switching with OBS
This route gives you direct control but requires the computer running OBS, your media, power, and an internet connection to remain available. An OBS community discussion describes streaming VLC playlists through OBS and suggests separate scenes with the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin for automation. It is a practical example, not a universal or official setup recipe; behavior can vary by system and software version. Read the OBS forum discussion and test your own configuration.

- Verify livestream access. Confirm your channel meets YouTube’s current requirements and create or prepare the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. Follow the encoder setup shown for your account in YouTube Help.
- Prepare authorized media. Organize the lofi and ambient tracks into separate playlists or folders. Confirm that the visuals and music are cleared for your intended broadcast and use.
- Create a playback state for each set in OBS. Make distinct scenes or equivalent states—for example, “Lofi” and “Ambient”—with the correct audio source and associated visuals in each. If you use VLC playlists as sources, check that each scene points to the intended playlist and that audio is routed as expected.
- Set the switching trigger. Choose a schedule, duration, or playlist-end trigger supported by your automation setup. The OBS forum thread mentions Advanced Scene Switcher as a possible way to automate scene changes. Menu names and exact steps depend on the plugin and OBS version, so use their current documentation rather than assuming one set of clicks applies everywhere.
- Connect OBS to YouTube’s encoder broadcast. Use the stream key and connection details shown in your YouTube live setup. Keep the same live output running while the internal scene or playlist changes; the change belongs in OBS’s playout, not in a second ordinary YouTube playlist.
- Run a complete handoff test. Watch and listen through a lofi-to-ambient transition and the reverse. Check whether the next playlist starts, whether there is a gap or overlap in audio, whether the visual change is acceptable, and what happens when the final item ends. The available community example does not guarantee seamless transitions or consistent playlist updates on every setup.
- Plan for local failures. For this route, OBS, the media, the computer, power, and connectivity must remain available. Decide how you will notice and recover from a stopped process or lost connection before leaving the stream unattended.
Advanced alternative: FFmpeg on a VPS
If you are comfortable managing a server and command-line media tools, a VPS with FFmpeg is another self-hosted architecture. A third-party guide outlines a YouTube radio setup using OBS and FFmpeg, but it is not YouTube or OBS official documentation and should be treated as a starting point, not a required configuration: RadioTech Studio’s guide. You would still need to arrange playlist switching, monitor the process, and test recovery on your own server.
What to test before leaving it running
- Playlist handoff: Confirm the scheduled or end-of-playlist trigger selects the intended lofi or ambient set.
- Audio continuity: Listen for silence, abrupt cuts, overlaps, or unexpectedly low or high levels at the transition.
- Visual continuity: Check that the correct artwork or scene appears and remains suitable for the full programming block.
- Playlist completion: Establish what happens if a playlist ends early, an item cannot play, or the playlist is empty.
- Long-run operation: Leave the configuration running long enough to observe the transitions you expect to use, rather than assuming a successful short test proves every handoff works.
- Recovery: Test what happens after a local process or connection interruption, and know how to restart or restore the intended playlist state.
- Rights and channel policy: Make sure every music and visual asset is authorized and review YouTube’s current livestream and monetization policies.
Choose local playout or cloud playout
The main trade-off is control and responsibility. A local OBS setup lets you build and alter scenes on your own computer, but that machine and its connection must stay available. A VPS/FFmpeg arrangement moves the process to a server but adds technical setup and maintenance. A cloud playout service can keep playback running without your home computer, subject to that service’s current features, terms, and storage limits.

The stream is live, but the music does not change
The transition may not be configured in the playback layer, or the automation may be changing a scene that does not control the active audio. Check the trigger, the active scene, and the source routing; test a manual switch first, then test automation while monitoring the live output.

Do not assume edits to a playlist already in use will refresh consistently. In an OBS forum thread, a participant reported that some edits appeared while others required restarting. Verify the behavior in your version and workflow; if necessary, prepare the next playlist state in advance and switch to it rather than relying on a live edit.

There is a gap, overlap, or abrupt cut at the change
The cited setup examples do not establish a universal crossfade or seamless handoff. Check how your sources handle the end of an item and the start of the next, and test the transition with the actual media and output. Adjust the playback or scene design only after confirming where the gap or overlap occurs.
The broadcast stops when you turn off the computer
A local OBS workflow depends on the computer and process running. Keep them on for local playout, or move playback to a cloud service or a server you operate. A hosted service’s own recovery and operating behavior should be checked against its current terms and tested where possible.
The channel can stream, but monetization is uncertain
Livestream access and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams and considers originality, repetitiveness, and reused content at channel level. Review the current policy; do not infer eligibility from a 24/7 format or playlist switch.
