To make an OBS-based YouTube music stream try to recover after an internet outage, enable OBS’s automatic reconnect option, choose a retry interval and enough retries for the outages you expect, and test the full setup. This can reconnect the encoder, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube keeps the same live event or that viewers see uninterrupted playback. Confirm recovery in YouTube Live Control Room and on the public watch page.
Set up automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open the reconnect controls. In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Advanced and look for the automatic reconnect controls. Enable Automatically Reconnect. Labels and behavior can vary by OBS release, so check the controls in the version you have installed.
- Choose a retry delay and maximum retries. Set the retry interval and the number of attempts to cover the outage length your stream may encounter. Do not assume a particular default: the current controls and defaults may differ between versions.
- Check your stream settings and connection. Set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, including when other people or devices are using the network. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. A connection interruption can break the stream even if OBS is configured to retry. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the headroom recommendation and advise testing your setup.
Use stream settings YouTube recommends
Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for your selected resolution and frame rate rather than applying a universal number. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS where supported. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the relevant resolution and frame rate.
These settings help make the outgoing stream compatible with YouTube’s recommendations; they do not fix an unstable internet connection. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate network instability between the computer and the remote ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot keep up with. Severe dropped frames can lead to a disconnect. See the OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Test whether the stream actually recovers
- Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test stream so you can check the whole setup without disrupting a public broadcast.
- Briefly interrupt the internet connection—for example, by unplugging Ethernet—then restore it. YouTube itself recommends testing stream setups and monitoring stream health.
- Watch OBS to see whether it attempts to reconnect, then check YouTube Live Control Room for health messages and confirm that the public watch page resumes playback as expected.
- Record what happens: OBS reconnecting is not by itself proof that the YouTube event remained the same or that viewers experienced continuous playback.
Diagnose a failed reconnect
Separate encoder trouble from outbound network trouble. Start with the encoder’s own status and error messages, then check whether the connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and CPU load, using current encoder software, and testing outbound internet when the encoder appears healthy. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide covers those checks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects: Treat this first as a connection-to-ingest or bitrate problem. Check upload stability, reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, account for competing network use, and follow the OBS troubleshooting steps.
- The encoder shows a stream-start error: Verify the stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the key in the encoder if needed. Check the stream URL and key if the encoder reports an encoder-start error.
- The encoder looks healthy but the stream does not recover: Test outbound internet service. If network problems persist, contact your internet service provider.
- The encoder is overloaded: Inspect CPU load and encoder errors; update the encoder software and review its configuration and hardware capacity.
- OBS reconnects but the viewer experience is unclear: Check both Live Control Room health messages and the public watch page. Do not infer uninterrupted playback from the reconnect indicator alone.
When to add a backup encoder
A second encoder is an optional failover strategy, not a requirement for enabling OBS reconnect. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that playback rolls over to the backup. Test this with your own channel and setup; YouTube does not guarantee identical event behavior in every outage.
A local OBS reconnect depends on the computer, power, OBS and the internet connection at that location. A second encoder adds setup and monitoring work, and you need to test that the player actually rolls over as intended. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos on its encoder setup page; that listing does not establish outage-recovery guarantees, current pricing or availability.
