How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream of Public-Domain Hymns and Devotional Music

You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream of hymns and devotional music by clearing the rights to every composition and recording, assembling an authorized program, creating a YouTube Live broadcast, and sending it through an encoder using YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. Plan to monitor the stream and recover from failures: no particular computer, network, or encoder configuration guarantees uninterrupted operation.

1. Clear the rights to every hymn and recording

Do not treat a hymn title, an online “free” label, or the age of a melody as permission to stream a particular recording. YouTube Help says the uploader is responsible for verifying public-domain status, notes that it has no official complete list of public-domain works, and warns that the rules vary by country or territory. Its guidance is to verify the material you actually upload.

Separate the composition from the recording

A hymn’s words and tune are one rights question; a modern arrangement, performance, and sound recording can raise separate rights questions. A public-domain composition does not automatically make every recording of it free to use. Prefer a recording you made yourself, or use a specific recording only after checking its rights and permitted uses.

Make a rights inventory before building the playlist

  1. List each hymn, including its words, tune, arrangement, performer, and the exact recording you intend to use.
  2. For each element, check its status for the territory relevant to your planned use. Keep a record of the source and evidence for your decision; there is no single official YouTube list that clears every work.
  3. If you rely on a third-party licence, read its actual scope. Confirm that it covers live streaming on your channel and any other intended uses.
  4. Keep copies of permissions and source records so you can respond if a match or claim is mistaken. YouTube says it does not decide ownership disputes; a Content ID match or claim is not, by itself, proof that the claimant owns the material.

Church of Scotland guidance describes music as public domain when both the words and music were written by authors or composers who died more than 70 years ago. That is context-specific church guidance, not a universal legal test or a substitute for checking the rules where you will stream.

Understand live Content ID interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It may warn you, replace the stream with a placeholder image, temporarily interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. Even when you have a licence, a live stream can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. A description that calls music “free” does not prevent a match. YouTube identifies public-domain music and music used with the rights holder’s permission as safer categories, and points creators to its Audio Library as one source; that does not clear unrelated recordings or arrangements.

2. Build a continuous program

Assemble the audio

Arrange only the recordings you have cleared into the sequence you want to repeat. Check the beginning and end of each file and the transitions between tracks, then listen through the assembled program for gaps, unexpected silence, clipping, or abrupt changes in volume. These are practical quality checks, not YouTube requirements.

Choose a visual element

Prepare a visual appropriate to your channel, such as a still image or other authorized visual material. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a required visual design or a rule that a music stream must contain motion video. Check the rights to any images, artwork, lyrics, or other material you display just as carefully as you check the music.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the material and description accurate

Use a title and description that accurately identify the stream and its contents. If you include lyrics, credits, or artwork, confirm that you have the rights to use them. Rights clearance for a live stream does not, on its own, establish eligibility for monetization or resolve any other YouTube policy question.

3. Create the YouTube Live broadcast and connect an encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or configure a live broadcast. Use YouTube’s applicable live workflow for your channel. Confirm that you have selected the intended broadcast before connecting an encoder.
  2. Set up an encoder that can deliver to YouTube using RTMPS. Google’s “Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS” documentation describes encoder-based delivery. RTMPS is a documented ingest option; the available guidance does not establish that you must buy a dedicated hardware encoder.
  3. Enter the broadcast’s server and stream-key details in the encoder. Use the ingest details YouTube provides for that broadcast. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls before continuing.
  4. Apply YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your chosen ingest mode. The general live encoder guidance recommends CBR (constant bitrate), a keyframe interval of two seconds that does not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Recheck YouTube’s current settings when you configure the encoder because guidance can change. The available source set does not establish one universally best resolution or bitrate for every stream; use the settings recommended for the ingest mode and output you choose.
  5. Start the encoder and verify the broadcast in YouTube’s live workflow. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and audio before treating the stream as ready. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for different viewers, so the stream you send is not the only format viewers may receive.

4. Test, monitor, and prepare for recovery

Before a public launch, run a private or otherwise controlled end-to-end check if your channel’s settings allow it. Confirm that the correct playlist plays, the visual is present, the audio is intelligible, YouTube receives the encoder feed, and the person responsible knows how to restart the workflow.

  • During the test: listen for silence, clipping, or abrupt transitions; check for a frozen or incorrect visual; and verify that the intended broadcast is receiving the feed.
  • During operation: monitor the broadcast and be ready to respond to encoder, network, power, or rights interruptions. A 24/7 target requires a plan for who will notice a failure and what they will do; a running encoder alone is not a recovery plan.
  • After an interruption: check whether the cause is a rights warning, a lost connection, a stopped encoder, or a power problem before restarting. If YouTube flags third-party content, do not assume that restarting will resolve the underlying rights issue.
  • For a licensed track that is interrupted: review the notice and your documentation, and confirm whether the rights holder needs to allowlist the channel. A licence does not necessarily prevent a live interruption when the channel is not allowlisted.

YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance also notes that archived streams may receive claims after the broadcast. Keep your rights records after the live session ends; a clean-looking live monitor is not proof that every recording is cleared.

5. Choose how the stream will stay online

You can send the program from a computer running compatible streaming software or use a dedicated encoder. Compare options by RTMPS compatibility, support for YouTube’s current recommended audio and video settings, monitoring and recovery needs, and total operating cost. The available guidance does not identify a universally best hardware arrangement, promise an uptime figure, or establish that a particular encoder model is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live around the clock. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the program in the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not need to stay on. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. It supports the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly service costs $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
