To keep crackling campfire sounds live on YouTube around the clock, prepare an original or properly licensed audio-visual loop, send it through an encoder such as OBS, and keep the encoder and its internet connection running. YouTube must first enable live streaming for an eligible, verified channel; that activation can take up to 24 hours. For a stream that should continue without a computer running at home, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
Before you begin: check channel eligibility and rights
Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.

Use audio and visuals you have permission to stream
The safest source is your own field recording. Alternatively, confirm that the license or permission for every sound and visual permits a YouTube livestream and any replay or archive you intend to keep. Save the recording, license, permissions, and related correspondence.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match may result in a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. YouTube also warns that licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and arrange allowlisting with the rights owner when applicable.

Prepare the campfire loop
Choose an audio source and a visual
You can stream audio with a still image, a looped fire video, or a live camera shot. Make sure you have rights to both the audio and the visual. A portable recorder is one optional way to capture your own fire ambience; it is not required by YouTube.
Build a repeating scene in OBS
- Open OBS and add a scene for the broadcast.
- In Sources, select + and add a Media Source. Choose your local audio or video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS supports local audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. Confirm the selected file plays through the end and restarts as intended.
- Add a still image or another visual source if the media file does not already contain video. Check that the picture and sound are both present in the scene.
For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist, with Loop Playlist enabled by default. The source requires VLC availability. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create a broadcast and choose the encoder method for a prepared scene. Select the stream settings that suit your planned broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS and check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream health before making the broadcast public or starting the event.
YouTube’s encoder setup information, including software encoder options, is in its live-stream encoder setup guide.

Set video and audio for a stable stream
Choose resolution and bitrate for the actual connection
Use a resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube lists a recommended H.264 video bitrate of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. That is an encoder recommendation, not a guaranteed minimum internet speed or a requirement for every stream. A static or slowly moving fire scene may not need a higher video rate simply because the stream runs for a long time.
For ordinary stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings guidance recommends 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps audio. The encoder guide lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and keyframe guidance before configuring a different resolution or codec.
Use a suitable keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the encoder accordingly; a bitrate that looks suitable does not compensate for an unsuitable keyframe setting.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Test audio and video movement representative of the planned broadcast. Listen for silence, clipping, abrupt loop boundaries, and unwanted sounds.
- Confirm OBS is sending both audio and video and that Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
- Check that the source file remains available and that the computer, power, and internet connection can remain on. Decide who will check the broadcast and how to restart it if the encoder or connection fails.
A local 24/7 stream depends on the computer and network continuing to work. YouTube describes a 24/7 feed as one that can remain live while another broadcast is created from the same stream, but that does not guarantee outage recovery or uninterrupted operation. Verify status periodically rather than assuming the stream will recover on its own.
Common problems and fixes
You cannot start a live broadcast
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first time enabling Live, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
YouTube does not receive the encoder signal
Confirm that the server URL and stream key in OBS match the current broadcast in Live Control Room, then check that OBS is actively streaming and that the connection is available. If needed, stop and restart the encoder after correcting the settings.

The stream has no sound, or the loop stops
Check the Media Source file path, playback, OBS audio levels, and mute state. Confirm Loop is enabled for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist is enabled for the VLC source. Listen through the loop boundary before leaving it running.
The stream is interrupted over a rights claim
Review the matched content and your permissions. If you are authorized to use third-party material, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID; a license alone does not ensure the live broadcast will avoid interruption.
The broadcast drops while unattended
Check power, the computer, the network, and whether the encoder still has access to its source file. Restart the encoder and verify the incoming signal in Live Control Room. A local setup needs a person or process to notice and handle failures; uninterrupted operation is not guaranteed.

Cost and operating trade-offs
OBS is a no-cost encoder, but a local 24/7 setup uses your own computer, electricity, and internet connection and requires you to handle failures. YouTube’s documentation does not establish the ongoing cost or reliability of your particular setup. Cloud streaming replaces the need to keep a home computer running with a recurring service cost; compare the cost and recovery options against your expected local power, equipment, connection, and monitoring needs. StreamNeo pricing is listed above; no independent uptime guarantee is stated here.
