YouTube Live does not provide a dependable episode bookmark for an endless children’s stream. To resume at the right episode after an encoder or stream interruption, save the current episode and playback position in your playout system, then restore that checkpoint before sending the feed back to YouTube. YouTube’s DVR is for pausing and rewinding within a live event—not a guaranteed bookmark across app closures, restarts, or new live sessions.
Why YouTube may not resume at the right episode
During a live stream, a viewer can pause and later continue from where they paused. But YouTube does not document that position as a durable episode bookmark that survives leaving the app, switching devices, a broadcaster restart, or a new live event. The creator’s playout position and the viewer’s position are separate: restarting the encoder from the wrong point can make the broadcast itself repeat or skip content, while a viewer may also need to find their place again.

There is another constraint for an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the live stream began, and Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions have lower DVR limits. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Make the broadcast resume from a saved episode checkpoint
YouTube’s encoder setup connects a feed using a stream URL and stream key; it does not define an episode queue or resume checkpoint. The following is a playout-system design recommendation, not a YouTube feature. It makes the broadcaster’s own feed recoverable after a process or encoder restart.

- Create an ordered episode manifest. List each episode in the intended order using stable episode IDs and source-file references. Do not treat a manually dragged timeline or the live player’s current position as the only record of what should play next.
- Save playback state outside the streaming process. Persist the current episode ID and its playback offset. Write checkpoints periodically and at every episode transition so a crash does not erase the last known position.
- Restore before sending video to YouTube. After a crash or encoder restart, load the saved episode and offset, seek the playout source to that point, and then resume output. If the saved state is missing or inconsistent, use a deliberate fallback—such as restarting the current episode—and log the decision rather than silently advancing the queue.
- Keep a local recording. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. Its archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. An archive is useful as a recording, but does not guarantee that a live viewer will resume at the same position. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Give caregivers an episode-level route. Publish episodes individually or provide an episode index with clear names. That lets a caregiver select a known episode instead of searching a long live timeline. Separate episode videos are also useful when the live player’s position is unavailable.
- Test on the devices children actually use. Reproduce app closure, device switching, and broadcaster restart on the relevant phones, TVs, and streaming devices. YouTube’s documentation does not promise position persistence for these cases, and DVR limits can differ on Apple TV, AirPlay, and older apps.
Choose between one continuous stream and shorter sessions

For a 24/7 channel, shorter sessions and separate episode uploads can be used together: the sessions make the live schedule easier to archive, while named episodes provide a direct recovery path for viewers. Keep local recordings regardless, because YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Keep viewer-side playback prompts separate from stream recovery
With autoplay on, YouTube may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” after 30 uninterrupted minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on web, or 180 minutes on TV. This is a viewer-side inactivity prompt; it does not mean the encoder skipped an episode or that the broadcast checkpoint failed. See YouTube’s explanation of the prompt.

YouTube Kids related-video autoplay is a separate feature. It is off by default; when enabled, it selects another related video based on the child’s viewing history. Parents can disable it in Family Center. It is not an episode-aware continuation feature for a live stream. See YouTube for Families’ settings guidance. Watch history can help people find recently watched videos when enabled, but YouTube does not document it as a live episode-position bookmark; videos watched while history is off do not appear there. Troubleshoot the common resume failures
- The live feed restarts at the beginning or skips an episode: Check that the playout process writes the episode ID and offset outside its own memory, and that it restores that state before playback resumes. Confirm that the episode manifest order has not changed.
- The broadcast continues, but a viewer returns at a different point: YouTube does not promise a durable viewer bookmark across leaving the app, changing devices, or a new live event. Direct caregivers to the episode index or individual episode video instead of relying on the live timeline.
- The live timeline cannot rewind far enough: The stream may have crossed the 12-hour DVR boundary, or the device or app may have a lower DVR limit. Offer a named episode route and test the relevant device.
- No archive appears: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording as backup and consider sessions shorter than 12 hours if automatic archive availability matters.
- A “Continue watching?” message stops playback: This is YouTube’s inactivity prompt when autoplay is on. It is separate from encoder recovery; the viewer must respond to the prompt to continue unattended playback.
- The next YouTube Kids video is not the next episode in your schedule: Related-video autoplay uses viewing history when enabled, rather than the creator’s intended live episode order. Use clearly labeled episodes and an episode index for deliberate selection.
