How to Make a 24/7 Bhajan Stream in 720p on a Low-Upload Connection

For a YouTube bhajan stream, start with 1280×720 at 30 fps, H.264 video at 3,000 kbps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC audio, and RTMPS. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for 720p30, but that is the encoder’s video setting—not enough upload speed by itself to ensure a stable stream. Applying YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom means reserving at least 3.75 Mbps of otherwise-available upload for a 3 Mbps stream. Test the actual program and check YouTube’s stream health before leaving it live unattended.

Recommended 720p settings for a low-bandwidth bhajan stream

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Output resolution 1280×720 (720p) The target resolution in this setup.
Frame rate 30 fps A practical starting point for an audio-led program on a constrained connection. YouTube’s published minimum for 720p60 is also 3 Mbps, but 60 fps is not needed for a mostly static devotional visual.
Video codec H.264 YouTube’s published encoder settings give 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for both 720p30 and 720p60 H.264.
Video bitrate and rate control 3,000 kbps; CBR Start at YouTube’s stated 720p H.264 minimum and use constant bitrate. The minimum is not a reliability guarantee.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds Matches YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Audio AAC; 128 kbps stereo recommended YouTube lists 128 kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports AAC or MP3.
Ingest protocol RTMPS where available YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data sent to its servers.

These are YouTube’s published encoder settings applied to a low-bandwidth use case, not a special official preset for 24/7 streams. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Calculate the upload speed you actually need

YouTube says, “The total bitrate of your streams cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” It recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, so do not treat a speed test that barely reaches the encoder’s configured bitrate as sufficient. For a 3 Mbps stream, the calculation is 3 ÷ 0.8 = 3.75 Mbps of stable, otherwise-available upload capacity. This is the capacity implied by YouTube’s margin, not a promise that a connection at that speed will remain stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measure upload at the location and time the stream will run, then test for sustained stability; a brief speed-test result does not show whether the connection will hold continuously.
  • Leave additional capacity for phones, cloud backups, security cameras, or other devices uploading on the same network.
  • If running a backup encoder, budget the primary and backup stream bitrates together, then add YouTube’s 20% margin. YouTube’s streaming guidance discusses this margin and shared-network constraints: Streaming tips.
  • If the connection cannot hold the 720p starting point, reduce resolution rather than assuming a nominal speed test will be available to the stream all the time. Test the lower setting as well.

A still or slow-moving devotional image may be less visually demanding than camera footage, but it is not a reason to assume the configured encoder bitrate will fall. Set and test the bitrate you intend to use.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips before scheduling the broadcast.
  2. Create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes stream configuration in terms that include ingestion type, stream URLs, resolution, and frame rate: LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.
  3. Keep the key private. Enter the stream URL and key only in the encoder you control. Anyone who gets the key may be able to send video to your live event; do not show it on screen or share it publicly.
  4. Configure the encoder. Set output to 1280×720 at 30 fps; choose H.264, CBR, 3,000 kbps video, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC audio, and RTMPS if the encoder offers it. Use 128 kbps for stereo audio as YouTube’s recommendation.
  5. Prepare the loop and recovery plan. Decide how the bhajan tracks and visual will repeat, and how you will restart the encoder after a computer, power, or network interruption. The YouTube guidance supports testing and monitoring, but does not promise that an encoder or connection will restart itself.
  6. Test with the real program. Use the same recordings, audio routing, visual, and settings planned for the broadcast. Check the YouTube preview, stream-health messages, and that audio and video are present. YouTube recommends setup at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand; these are useful checks before a continuous broadcast too.
  7. Monitor the stream after it starts. Watch stream health and listen to the live output. A successful initial connection does not establish that the upload connection will remain stable indefinitely.

Make 24/7 operation and archiving realistic

A continuous stream depends on the encoder, power, internet connection, and program source continuing to work. Decide who will notice a dropped stream and how it will be restarted; YouTube’s setup guidance does not establish automatic recovery for your particular computer or encoder. If you use a backup encoder, test the failover and include both streams in your upload-capacity calculation.

YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable full-length archive. If retaining the full program matters, record locally and check that the recording is growing. Estimate storage from your recording bitrate and the retention time you need. YouTube’s wording is: “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” See Archive live streams.

Check music and recording rights before going live

Confirm that you have the rights to broadcast each particular recording and performance. A bhajan’s devotional subject does not by itself make a recording free to rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms state that broadcasters must have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content: it may replace a stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it if identified content remains. Even a licensed recording can be interrupted if its owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and Copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Stream health reports instability or the stream disconnects Available upload is below the stream’s needs, varies over time, or is being used by other devices. Check sustained upload while the encoder is running, pause other uploads, and preserve the 20% margin. If it remains unstable, test a lower resolution.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Incorrect stream URL or key, an encoder configuration issue, or an ineligible/restricted channel. Recheck the URL and key in the Live Control Room and encoder; confirm channel verification and live-stream eligibility.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong Incorrect audio source, routing, or encoder audio selection. Check the encoder’s selected audio input and AAC configuration, then test with the actual playlist before the broadcast.
The stream is interrupted despite having permission to use a song Content ID may not recognize the channel as allowlisted, or another rights issue may be detected. Confirm the rights and ask the relevant owner about channel allowlisting; review YouTube’s copyright guidance.
The full 24-hour program is not available as an archive YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording if a complete archive is important, and verify the recording is actively growing.
