The most reliable way to reduce the battery used by a 120Hz display is to cap its refresh rate with the phone’s built-in controls. On ProMotion iPhones, Apple documents a 60-frames-per-second cap through Low Power Mode or the separate Limit Frame Rate control. On the Samsung model covered by its manual, choose Settings > Display > Motion smoothness > Standard. Other Android phones use different labels and menus, so look under Display or Battery for refresh-rate, motion-smoothness, or power-mode controls.
These settings can reduce how often the screen refreshes, but the sources do not establish a guaranteed number of extra hours or a percentage improvement. Low Power Mode also changes other phone behavior, while a refresh-specific option limits the display without applying the full power-saving profile.

Start with the control your phone actually offers
A 120Hz screen does not have to run at its maximum rate all the time. Supported phones can cap the maximum refresh behavior in software, so no case, charger, accessory, or hardware modification is required. The name and scope of the control differ by model and software version.
| Phone and control | Maximum refresh behavior documented | What else the setting does | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| ProMotion iPhone: Limit Frame Rate | 60 frames per second | Refresh-specific control | Supported ProMotion models with the control enabled in iOS |
| ProMotion iPhone: Low Power Mode | 60 frames per second | Also changes other power-related behavior, including brightness and background activity | iPhone 15 and later, and iPhone 14 or earlier, with different Settings paths |
| Samsung model covered by the cited manual: Motion smoothness > Standard | Standard refresh rate for normal situations | Samsung describes the option as conserving battery power | Use the path only if your model and software show these labels |
Apple’s current documentation describes the iPhone cap and Low Power Mode behavior in its Power Modes guide and its onscreen-motion guide. Samsung’s wording and menu path come from its Motion smoothness manual.

What lowering the refresh rate changes
Refresh rate is the maximum number of times the display can update each second. A 120Hz setting permits up to 120 updates per second; a 60-frames-per-second cap prevents the display from exceeding 60 updates per second. Scrolling and animations may look less fluid at the lower cap, but the phone is no longer driving the panel at its highest documented rate.
A cap is different from turning off animations. Animation settings change visual effects; a refresh-rate control changes the display’s update ceiling. Disabling animation effects therefore should not be treated as a substitute for selecting a lower refresh rate.
The practical benefit depends on your model, software, screen brightness, cellular signal, apps, and how often the display is active. The cited Apple and Samsung documents specify the controls, not a measured battery-life result. Do not plan around a promised number of hours or a fixed percentage.
iPhone: use a 60-frames-per-second cap
Option 1: turn on Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode is the quickest documented route when you want the display capped and are willing to accept broader battery-saving changes.

- On an iPhone 15 or later, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- On an iPhone 14 or earlier, open Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
- Turn the switch on and leave the mode enabled while you want the lower display limit.
Apple documents that Low Power Mode limits ProMotion displays to 60 frames per second. It also affects other behavior, including reduced brightness and changes to background activity. If you need the display cap only, use the separate Limit Frame Rate control instead of accepting those wider changes.
Option 2: enable Limit Frame Rate
Apple’s onscreen-motion controls include Limit Frame Rate. On ProMotion iPhone models, enabling it limits the display’s maximum frame rate to 60 frames per second.
- Open the iPhone’s Settings app and go to the onscreen-motion controls described in Apple’s Customize onscreen motion guide.
- Turn on Limit Frame Rate.
- Scroll through a long page or use an app with moving content to confirm that the setting is active, then leave it enabled when battery conservation matters.
This option is the better fit when you want a refresh cap without deliberately enabling the rest of Low Power Mode. Apple’s documentation does not promise a particular battery-life gain from the cap.
Which iPhone option should you choose?
- Choose Low Power Mode when you want a broad, temporary battery-saving profile and do not mind its additional changes.
- Choose Limit Frame Rate when the display cap is your main goal and you want more of the phone’s normal background behavior to remain unchanged.
- Use both only if you want both scopes. The separate control does not turn Low Power Mode into a refresh-only mode; Low Power Mode remains the broader profile.
Samsung: switch Motion smoothness to Standard
The cited Samsung manual gives this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Motion smoothness.
- Select Standard.
- Apply the choice if the phone presents a confirmation button.
Samsung describes Standard as a standard refresh rate for normal situations to conserve battery power. The instruction applies to the model and software represented by that manual; do not assume every Samsung phone has the same label, options, or exact menu location. If you cannot find Motion smoothness, use the phone’s Settings search for “motion,” “refresh rate,” or “smoothness,” then confirm the result in your model’s current manual.

Other Android phones: find the model-specific control
There is no universal Android menu path established by the cited documentation. Manufacturers can place the control under Display, Display refresh rate, Motion smoothness, Screen refresh rate, Battery, or a power-saving mode, and the available choices can change with the phone and software version.
- Open Settings and search for refresh rate, motion smoothness, or screen refresh.
- If search returns nothing, inspect Display and Battery settings for a refresh or power-mode control.
- Choose the lower or standard option when it is clearly described as reducing refresh rate or conserving power.
- Read the option’s description before applying it. A power-saving mode may change syncing, background activity, brightness, performance, or notifications in addition to display behavior.
- If the setting is absent, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model and software version. Do not assume that a 120Hz panel necessarily exposes a fixed 60Hz switch.
Some phones dynamically vary refresh rate rather than offering a simple 120Hz/60Hz selector. In that case, selecting a standard or battery-saving mode may be the only built-in way to favor lower refresh behavior.
Refresh-specific control versus a broader power mode
The choice is not only about the number shown next to the display. It is also about how much of the phone’s behavior you want to change.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a refresh-specific limit when
- You want to keep normal background activity and app behavior as much as possible.
- You are comfortable with less fluid scrolling and animation.
- Your phone exposes a separate limit such as Apple’s Limit Frame Rate.
Use a broader power mode when
- You need a quick, system-wide battery-saving change.
- You accept reduced brightness or changes to background activity.
- Your phone does not expose a separate refresh-rate control.
Read the description on the phone before enabling a mode. A label such as “battery saver” does not establish that the display alone is responsible for the savings, and a lower refresh setting does not guarantee that every other source of battery drain will change.

How to check that the change is helping
Because the cited sources provide no universal battery-life figure, evaluate the setting on your own phone rather than relying on a generic percentage.
- Record the starting battery percentage and the time.
- Use the phone normally for a comparable period on a day with similar screen brightness, network conditions, and apps.
- Apply the lower-refresh or standard setting.
- Repeat the same type of use for a comparable period.
- Compare the battery percentage used and the screen-on activity shown by your phone’s Battery settings.
This is an observation of your device, not a laboratory measurement. Keep variables as similar as practical: video playback, gaming, weak cellular signal, navigation, camera use, and high brightness can dominate battery use and obscure any display-refresh effect.
Trade-offs you should expect
Smoother motion versus lower maximum refresh
Scrolling, transitions, and supported games may appear less smooth after moving from 120Hz to a 60-frames-per-second cap or a standard mode. That is the direct visual trade-off for limiting the display’s maximum update rate.
Broader changes with Low Power Mode
On iPhone, Low Power Mode is not a display-only switch. Apple lists reduced brightness and changes to background activity among its effects. If those changes interfere with your normal use, turn to the separate Limit Frame Rate control when your model provides it.
Best Value
Model and software differences
Menu names, available rates, and automatic behavior can change after a software update or differ between regional and carrier variants. A path that works on one phone is not evidence that it exists on another, even when both advertise a 120Hz panel.
Troubleshooting when the setting is missing
You cannot find a 60Hz or Standard option
Search Settings for the terms used by your manufacturer rather than looking only for “60Hz.” The control may be called refresh rate, motion smoothness, screen smoothness, standard, adaptive, or power saving. If no relevant option appears, consult the exact model’s manual; the cited material does not establish that all phones expose a fixed 60Hz choice.
The phone still looks or feels variable
A maximum cap is not necessarily a promise that every app will render at exactly the same rate. Apps, video frame rates, touch response, and system animations can make motion feel different. Confirm that the setting remains enabled after a restart or software update and check whether a separate game or performance mode overrides it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBattery life does not noticeably improve
That result is possible. The available documentation specifies what the settings do but reports no universal hours-saved or percentage-saved result. Brightness, radios, processor load, background activity, and signal strength may outweigh the display change. Keep the lower setting if its trade-off is acceptable, but do not infer that it must produce a fixed improvement.
Low Power Mode changes more than you want
Disable Low Power Mode and use a refresh-specific option if your iPhone provides Limit Frame Rate. On other phones, look for a standalone refresh control instead of the full battery-saver profile.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- A 120Hz display does not prove that a fixed 60Hz switch exists.
- Lowering the refresh ceiling does not guarantee a specific number of extra hours.
- Reducing animation effects is not the same as reducing display refresh rate.
- A menu path from one Android model should not be copied blindly to another.
- Low Power Mode should not be described as refresh-only on iPhone; Apple documents additional effects.
Practical decision checklist
- ProMotion iPhone and want the broadest quick saving: enable Low Power Mode using the path for your iPhone generation.
- ProMotion iPhone and want only the display cap: enable Limit Frame Rate in the onscreen-motion controls.
- Samsung model with the documented menu: choose Settings > Display > Motion smoothness > Standard.
- Any other Android phone: search Display and Battery settings, then verify the exact model’s instructions.
- After changing it: accept the smoother-motion trade-off and judge the battery result from comparable use on your own device.
