Maintaining connection and purpose in later life works best as a personal, repeatable plan: keep in touch with people you value, join activities that genuinely interest you, contribute to others when you can, and remove practical barriers such as transport, hearing, vision, mobility or technology problems. Start with one manageable recurring contact rather than an overfilled calendar.
Loneliness and social isolation are not the same. Loneliness is the distressing feeling of being alone or disconnected; social isolation means having limited contact, relationships or support. Someone can live alone and feel content, or be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. Around 16% of people worldwide and an estimated 11.8% of older people experience loneliness, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) topic page accessed in 2026; the page does not identify the survey year behind those overall estimates. WHO’s overview of social isolation and loneliness among older people explains the distinction and the factors that shape risk.

What “staying connected” and “having purpose” can mean
Connection is not a target number of visits or messages. It is contact that feels safe, respectful and meaningful to the individual. For one person that may be a weekly call with a sibling; for another it may be a choir rehearsal, a walking group or a quiet online discussion with people who share an interest.

Purpose is equally personal. It can come from caring for family, making or learning something, helping neighbours, volunteering, maintaining a garden, participating in faith or cultural life, or simply being present for people you love. These are avenues to explore, not guaranteed cures for loneliness and not substitutes for medical or mental-health care.

Ageing itself does not make loneliness inevitable. Circumstances differ widely, and a person may prefer a small social circle or time alone. The useful question is not “How busy should an older person be?” but “Which relationships and activities fit this person’s values, energy, access needs and preferred level of interaction?”
Why connection can become harder after major life changes
Later life often brings transitions that alter routines and opportunities to meet people. A move, retirement, bereavement or a friend’s illness can remove familiar contact. Health changes, disability, memory challenges, hearing or vision loss and difficulty getting around may make an otherwise attractive activity exhausting or inaccessible. Limited driving, unreliable public transport, cost, inaccessible buildings or a lack of suitable communication technology can have the same effect.
These barriers are not personal failures. WHO identifies transportation, accessible community spaces and information and communication technologies as part of the environment that determines whether people can participate. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) also notes that health and sensory changes, loss of family or friends and reduced mobility can affect social connection. See NIA’s healthy-aging guidance for examples of adapting support to an individual.
Build a sustainable connection plan
A plan is more likely to last when it is small, specific and shaped around existing interests. Use the following sequence, adjusting it for health, transport, budget and communication preferences.
- Ask what meaningful contact feels like. Is the person seeking conversation, practical help, shared activity, intellectual stimulation, spiritual community or simply company during a routine task? Listen before suggesting a schedule.
- Choose one recurring contact. Put a phone call, video chat, walk or in-person visit on the calendar at a mutually workable time. A recurring appointment or reminder turns a good intention into a visible routine.
- Add one interest-based opportunity. Try a class, hobby group, walking group, choir, community group or online gathering connected to something the person already enjoys or wants to learn.
- Check access before committing. Confirm transport, step-free entry, seating, toilet access, lighting, acoustics, sign-language or captioning options, and whether the pace suits the person’s energy.
- Review after two or three meetings. Ask what felt energising, tiring, welcoming or awkward. Keep, modify or replace the activity without treating a poor fit as a personal failure.
Reconnect with people already known
Existing relationships are often the least demanding place to begin. Contact can be brief and still matter when it is reliable.
Make calls and video chats predictable
Agree on a day and time rather than relying on “call sometime.” Use a calendar reminder, a recurring phone alarm or a shared digital calendar. If hearing is difficult, use headphones, a louder speaker, captions or text chat; ask which format is clearest instead of assuming video is easier.

Turn errands into shared time
Invite someone to walk to a shop, prepare a meal, attend an appointment, watch a local event or sit together while each person works on a separate task. Shared ordinary activities can feel less pressured than a formal visit.

After a period of little contact, a simple message such as “I’ve missed talking with you; would Tuesday afternoon work?” is usually more useful than explaining who failed to call. If a relationship is unsafe, coercive or consistently distressing, prioritise boundaries and professional support over increasing contact.
Meet people through shared interests
Activities provide a natural reason to return and a topic to discuss, which can make first conversations easier. Options include:
- Classes in languages, art, music, computing, cooking or local history.
- Walking, gardening, exercise, dance or adaptive recreation groups.
- Book clubs, choirs, faith or cultural groups and community associations.
- Libraries, museums, makerspaces and adult-learning programmes.
- Online forums, classes or video groups when travel is difficult.
Choose by interest first, then test practical fit. A person who dislikes competitive sport may enjoy a gentle walking group; someone with limited stamina may prefer a monthly workshop rather than a weekly class. WHO and NIA describe group activities as opportunities, not a single intervention proven best for everyone. NIA’s guide to activities you enjoy as you age encourages adapting participation to abilities and preferences.
Use volunteering to combine contact and purpose
Helping others can provide a role, a reason to show up and contact with people who share a commitment. Possibilities include sorting donations, reading with children, welcoming visitors, helping at a food programme, mentoring, telephone befriending or supporting an animal-welfare organisation. Some roles can be done from home.
Match the commitment to energy, schedule, transport and physical or cognitive demands. Ask about training, supervision, safeguarding, breaks and whether a trial shift is available. A small, defined role is often more sustainable than accepting an open-ended obligation.

NIA’s tips for staying connected state: “For example, helping others through volunteering helps you feel less lonely and allows you to have a sense of mission and purpose in life, which is linked to better health.” This is official guidance attributed to NIA, not a guarantee that volunteering will produce a particular health outcome for every person.
Find purpose when retirement changes the daily structure
Retirement can remove deadlines, colleagues and a clear role. Replacing all of that with constant activity is unnecessary; a better approach is to identify what the former routine provided and recreate only the valuable parts.
- Contribution: mentoring, volunteering, caring, advocacy or practical help for neighbours.
- Mastery: learning a language, repairing objects, practising music, writing, cooking or studying a subject.
- Belonging: regular time with family, friends, a faith community, cultural group or club.
- Continuity: preserving family stories, photographs, recipes, crafts or local knowledge.
- Enjoyment: hobbies and outings chosen because they are pleasurable, not because they appear productive.
Write down two activities that feel meaningful and one that is simply enjoyable. Give each a realistic next action, such as asking a library about a class, scheduling a call or spending 20 minutes on a hobby. Purpose can grow from repeated small actions; it does not need to arrive as a single new mission.
Remove transport, mobility and sensory barriers
Before dropping an activity, identify the exact obstacle and ask the organiser what can change.
- Transport: check community shuttles, paratransit, volunteer driver schemes, accessible taxis, lifts from friends or events on a bus route. Confirm the return journey and bad-weather plan.
- Mobility: ask about ramps, lifts, seating, rest points, walking distance from parking and whether participation can be adapted or done seated.
- Hearing: request microphones, hearing loops, captioned video, written agendas and quieter rooms. Sit where the speaker’s face is visible.
- Vision: seek large-print or screen-reader-compatible information, strong lighting, high-contrast signs and verbal descriptions of visual material.
- Memory or cognitive changes: use written reminders, a consistent meeting place, a named contact person and shorter sessions with clear transitions.
- Cost: ask about free community programmes, sliding-scale fees, loan equipment and whether a first session can be observed before payment.
WHO’s work emphasises that social connection depends on policy and community design as well as individual effort. Accessible information, communication tools and public spaces can determine who is able to participate.
Use technology as a bridge, not a replacement for choice
Phone and video contact can maintain relationships across distance or during recovery, but the tool should fit the person. A tablet may be useful for someone who lacks a suitable device and wants scheduled video chats. Choose by ease of use, readable display, volume and caption options, reliable connection, privacy controls, technical support and budget. The public-health guidance cited here does not endorse a brand or establish that purchasing a device reduces loneliness.

A simple video-call setup
- Place the device on a stable stand at eye level and connect it to home Wi-Fi or a trusted mobile connection.
- Save frequent contacts with large, recognisable labels and add a shortcut to the call app.
- Enable captions, larger text, increased volume or hearing-device compatibility as needed.
- Set a recurring call time and agree who will start the call if one person is less confident with technology.
- Have a fallback: an ordinary phone call or text if the video connection fails.
Protect privacy by using device locks, updated software and a private setting for sensitive conversations. Technology should expand options; it should not pressure someone who prefers face-to-face, telephone or letter-based contact.

Compare options before committing
There is no universal “best” activity. Use this comparison to choose a first experiment.
| Option | Best when | Questions to check | Possible adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular call or video chat | Distance, health or transport limits in-person visits | Is the time reliable? Can the person hear, see and operate the device? | Use captions, headphones, a larger display or an audio-only call |
| In-person visit or shared errand | Existing relationship and preference for face-to-face contact | Is travel manageable for both people? Is the setting comfortable? | Shorten the visit, meet near home or combine it with an ordinary task |
| Class or hobby group | Interest in learning and meeting several people | What is the cost, schedule, group size, pace and accessibility? | Try a single session, choose a quieter group or attend online |
| Walking or activity group | Enjoyment of movement and informal conversation | Can the route, speed and weather be managed safely? | Use a seated or indoor version, a shorter route or a buddy |
| Volunteering | Desire to contribute and take on a defined role | What training, supervision, travel and time commitment are required? | Start with a one-off shift or remote role |
| Community or support group | Need for mutual understanding around a life change or challenge | Is the group facilitated, respectful and available in an accessible format? | Ask about a phone, online or smaller-group option |
Compare each choice by personal interest, accessibility, travel burden, cost, schedule, desired interaction level and whether it creates recurring contact. A trial is information, not a promise to continue.

Do not dismiss loneliness with “just stay busy.” Ask what kind of connection is missing and listen without arguing with the feeling. Someone may want one trusted conversation rather than more group events, or may be grieving a specific relationship that cannot be replaced by an activity.
Persistent loneliness, severe distress, depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide or self-harm call for appropriate professional or urgent support. Social activities are not a substitute for assessment or treatment. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists depression, anxiety, suicidality and self-harm among potential health concerns associated with social isolation and loneliness; these are population-level risks, not an individual diagnosis. See the CDC’s health-effects overview. In an immediate safety crisis, contact local emergency services or a crisis service in the person’s country.

A practical 30-day experiment
This schedule is a flexible example, not a medical prescription or a required frequency.
- Days 1–3: Name one person to contact, one enjoyable activity and one barrier that might interfere.
- Days 4–7: Schedule the first call or visit. Ask an organiser about access, cost and transport for the activity.
- Week 2: Complete the first contact and attend, observe or try the activity once. Record what felt comfortable and what did not.
- Week 3: Repeat the contact at the agreed time. Make one adjustment, such as captions, a shorter session, a lift or a quieter venue.
- Week 4: Decide whether to continue, modify or replace the activity. Add a second connection only if the first feels manageable.
Use a paper calendar, phone reminder or shared calendar according to preference. The aim is a dependable pattern that fits real life, not a high score for social events. No source cited here establishes an optimal number of contacts per week.
Help from family, friends and community organisations
Support works best when it preserves the older person’s choice. Offer two or three options, ask permission before arranging anything and accept “not now” as useful information. Provide practical help—transport, device setup, introductions, accessible information or accompaniment—without taking over decisions.
Organisations can improve participation by publishing clear access details, offering multiple communication channels, training volunteers, providing seating and toilets, and creating low-pressure ways to join. A welcoming greeting and a named contact can matter as much as the activity itself.
What current public-health guidance says
WHO, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Telecommunication Union and UN Women published a 2021 advocacy brief on social isolation and loneliness among older people, linking the issue to policy opportunities and the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing. The brief is available at WHO’s publication page.
WHO’s 2025 Commission report, From loneliness to social connection: charting a path to healthier societies, examines social connection as a societal issue as well as an individual concern. It is available at the WHO report page. These documents support action at community and policy levels; they do not show that one hobby, device or volunteering role works for every person.
The evidence also should not be turned into a promise that a particular activity prevents disease. Associations between isolation, loneliness and health outcomes describe risk patterns across populations, not guaranteed cause-and-effect results for an individual.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming living alone means loneliness: ask about the person’s experience rather than inferring it from their household.
- Equating crowds with connection: a busy room may not provide a trusted or meaningful relationship.
- Prescribing a packed schedule: too many commitments can increase fatigue and withdrawal.
- Ignoring access: an invitation is not practical if transport, hearing, vision, mobility or cost barriers remain.
- Choosing for someone without consent: offer support while respecting interests, culture, identity and boundaries.
- Treating technology as the answer: a device is useful only when it is accessible, affordable and wanted.
- Using social activity instead of care: significant distress or safety concerns require professional or urgent help.
