The safest way to maintain any home appliance is to start with its owner’s manual, then perform only the cleaning, inspection and replacement tasks that the model permits. Routines such as clearing dryer lint, cleaning refrigerator seals and filters, and running the washer or dishwasher cleaning cycle can prevent avoidable wear and reveal problems early. They may improve reliability, but no dependable source establishes that maintenance adds a specific number of years to an appliance’s life.
Start with the owner’s manual
Appliances that look alike can have very different service points. A refrigerator may have front-accessible condenser coils, enclosed coils that require no homeowner cleaning, or components that a certified technician must service. Washer and dishwasher filters can be removable, hidden behind a panel, or absent on a particular model. A manual also specifies approved cleaners, power-disconnection steps, replacement parts and warranty restrictions.

Before touching an appliance, find the model number and read the sections usually titled Cleaning and Care, Maintenance, Safety or Troubleshooting. Treat the schedules below as examples from manufacturers, not universal rules. If the manual conflicts with a general recommendation, the manual wins.
- Disconnect power exactly as instructed. For some work this means unplugging the appliance; for hard-wired equipment it may mean switching off the circuit breaker.
- Do not remove an access panel, reach into a moving mechanism or handle gas or electrical connections unless the manual explicitly allows homeowner service.
- Use only cleaners, brushes, filters and replacement parts approved for the model. A product that is safe for one finish or seal can damage another.
- Keep a simple log of the date, task and any symptoms. It helps you notice a change in drying time, cooling, drainage or noise.
A practical maintenance schedule
The table combines manufacturer guidance with the qualifications attached to each task. “As needed” means inspection should determine the interval rather than a calendar reminder.

| Dishwasher | Spray arms, nozzles, removable filter and cleaning cycle | Model-specific; no universal interval is established | Check that arms move freely and use only the cleaner and procedure approved for the machine. |
| Oven and exhaust hood | Clean using approved method; clean hood filter | Whirlpool’s seasonal checklist suggests quarterly tasks | The checklist is not exhaustive. Confirm rack placement, self-clean use and filter method in the manual. |
How to maintain a refrigerator
Clean the interior without damaging surfaces
Remove food and detachable shelves or bins according to the manual. Wipe spills promptly so they do not harden around seals, vents or controls. Let cold glass shelves reach the temperature specified by the manufacturer before exposing them to warm water; a sudden temperature change can crack glass. Dry surfaces before returning food, and keep air passages clear so the refrigerator can circulate air.
Whirlpool’s general refrigerator maintenance guide lists monthly interior cleaning as a general schedule. That is a manufacturer suggestion, not proof that every household needs a monthly deep clean.
Replace applicable filters correctly
If your refrigerator has a replaceable water or air filter, record the installation date and use the interval in the manual. Whirlpool’s general guide lists six months for equipped models, but filter life can depend on the model and water conditions. Buy a filter identified as compatible with the exact model number, flush or reset the indicator as instructed, and check for leaks after installation. A refrigerator without a replaceable filter does not need a substitute part.

Wipe the gasket with the approved cleaner and inspect it for splits, flattening or sections that no longer contact the cabinet. Close the door on a clean sheet of paper; if it slips out easily at several points, the seal may need adjustment or replacement. Do not use this test as a repair diagnosis by itself. A warped door, hinge problem or cabinet that is out of level can also create a gap.
Whirlpool’s general guide lists an annual gasket inspection and leveling check. Use the model’s adjustment instructions rather than turning feet or hinges at random. A level cabinet helps the door close and seal as designed.

Decide whether condenser-coil cleaning is appropriate
Do not assume every refrigerator needs annual coil cleaning. Whirlpool’s coil guidance says routine cleaning is typically unnecessary in a normal home. Dust, grease and substantial pet traffic are reasons to inspect more often; the page suggests an inspection and cleaning interval of three to six months in those conditions.
First confirm that the manual permits homeowner access. If it does, unplug the refrigerator or switch off its circuit breaker before cleaning, as Whirlpool specifies. Use a soft-bristle coil brush or a vacuum attachment only where the design allows. Work gently: bending fins, tubing or nearby dispenser water lines can create a more serious fault. Replace the cover and restore power when finished. If the coils are sealed, inaccessible or marked technician-only, stop and arrange qualified service instead.
How to maintain a clothes dryer
Clear the filter after every load
Pull out the lint filter and remove lint after each load. A filter coated with fabric-softener residue may look clean while restricting air, so GE Appliances Factory Service recommends washing it periodically when residue builds up. Let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Never run the dryer without its filter or with a torn screen.
Clean the trap opening and exhaust path
Lint can collect below the filter and in the duct even when the screen is emptied. GE’s dryer maintenance guidance suggests cleaning the lint-trap opening every few months with a dryer vent brush or vacuum and cleaning the exhaust vent at least annually. The exact access method depends on the machine and the duct layout.
A blocked vent reduces performance and creates a fire hazard. Treat clothes that remain damp after a normal cycle, a cabinet that becomes unusually hot, or visibly weak airflow at the outside hood as warning signs. Stop using the dryer if you suspect severe blockage, crushed ducting, burning odor or damaged wiring. Cleaning that requires unsafe roof, crawl-space or wall access, or work around gas and electrical components, belongs to a qualified professional.

How to maintain a washing machine
Use the machine’s approved cleaning cycle
Washers commonly provide a Drum Sanitize or Tub Clean cycle. LG’s in-home appliance care description also identifies drain-pump filter maintenance and gasket cleaning as service tasks. These examples do not establish one frequency for every washer. Read the manual for the cycle name, whether the drum must be empty, the approved cleaner and any ventilation step afterward.
After a cycle, inspect the door or lid gasket for hair, coins, detergent residue and trapped moisture. Wipe it with the recommended method and leave the door or lid open only when the manual says that is safe for your household. Do not pull or stretch the seal; a distorted gasket can leak.
Check the drain-pump filter only if the model permits it
Some front-load washers have a user-accessible drain-pump filter behind a small lower panel. Others route maintenance differently. If your manual authorizes access, place a shallow container and towels where directed, drain the residual water, remove debris and reinstall the filter firmly. If the panel is not identified for homeowner service, or if water remains under pressure, use qualified service rather than guessing.
Repeated drainage errors, standing water, a musty odor that survives the approved cleaning cycle or a leak at the gasket are reasons to stop treating the symptom as routine cleaning. Record the error code and model number for service.

How to maintain a dishwasher
Keep spray arms and nozzles clear
With power disconnected as directed, check that each spray arm turns freely and that its nozzles are not blocked by food particles or mineral deposits. Remove an arm only if the manual explains how. Do not enlarge a nozzle with a sharp object; changing the opening can alter spray pressure.
Clean the removable filter and run the approved cycle
Many dishwashers have a removable filter, but its shape, locking direction and cleaning method vary. LG’s service information lists filter maintenance and deep cleaning with dishwasher cleaner as relevant tasks. Use the exact procedure and product named by your manual, and do not assume a branded cleaner is required. If the filter is not user-removable, do not pry it out.
Persistent cloudy glassware, standing water, foul odor or poor spray coverage can indicate a blocked filter, drain problem, heater issue or water-supply fault. Check the simple manual-approved items first; arrange service when the diagnosis moves beyond cleaning.

Oven cleaning
Whirlpool’s seasonal appliance checklist includes oven cleaning among quarterly suggestions, but it says the checklist is not exhaustive and directs owners to the Use and Care Guide. Before selecting a self-clean cycle, verify that racks, thermometers, liners and cookware are allowed to remain inside. Some models prohibit particular cleaners or require ventilation during the cycle. Never improvise with abrasive chemicals on a catalytic, steam-clean or specially coated surface.

Exhaust-hood filters
Grease-loaded hood filters restrict airflow and can soil the fan and duct. The same Whirlpool checklist places exhaust-hood filter cleaning in its quarterly suggestions. The correct interval and whether a filter is washable or replaceable depend on the model. Remove power if the manual requires it, use the approved degreaser, dry the filter fully and reinstall it in the correct orientation.

When to do the work yourself and when to call for service
| Question | Homeowner maintenance is reasonable when… | Use qualified service when… |
|---|---|---|
| Does the manual permit access? | The component is explicitly described as user-cleanable or replaceable. | The panel is sealed, marked technician-only, or absent from the manual. |
| Is the task low risk? | It involves wiping, replacing a specified filter, emptying lint or using an approved brush with power disconnected. | It involves gas, live electrical parts, refrigerant, high-voltage components, roof or crawl-space access, or structural duct work. |
| Could a mistake affect warranty or safety? | The manual gives a clear procedure and approved materials. | The warranty or service terms require authorized work, or an error could cause a leak, fire or electrical hazard. |
| Is paid care the best value? | You can complete the documented task safely and reach the component. | The appliance is inaccessible, symptoms persist after documented cleaning, or the diagnosis is uncertain. |
Manufacturers also offer paid maintenance programs, but availability, geography, eligibility, inclusions and price change. LG, for example, describes in-home care for refrigerators, washers and dishwashers and publishes MyLG plan information; review the current terms at LG In-Home Appliance Care and MyLG Pro plans before purchasing. A plan is optional, not a universal requirement for keeping an appliance in service.
A safe maintenance workflow
- Identify the exact model. Photograph the rating label and download the current owner’s manual from the manufacturer.
- Define the permitted task. Confirm the component, cleaner, brush, replacement part and interval in the manual.
- Prepare the area. Remove food, laundry or dishes as applicable; protect flooring; gather towels, a container, a soft brush or vacuum attachment approved for the task.
- Disconnect energy when required. Unplug the appliance or switch off the specified breaker. Close a water or gas supply only when the manual directs it.
- Clean gently. Avoid bending fins, forcing filters, scraping seals or poking spray nozzles with sharp tools.
- Reassemble and inspect. Confirm that filters, covers, gaskets and hoses are seated, and that no tool or debris remains inside.
- Test safely. Restore power and run the short test or cycle specified by the manual. Watch for leaks, unusual noise, odor or error codes.
- Log the result. Record the date, part number and any symptom so the next inspection is based on evidence rather than guesswork.
Early warning signs that need attention
- Refrigerator: food is not staying cold, the compressor runs unusually long, frost appears where the manual does not expect it, or the door no longer seals evenly.
- Dryer: drying takes longer, airflow at the outside hood is weak, the cabinet is unusually hot, or there is a burning smell. Stop using it until the vent and appliance are assessed.
- Washer: repeated drainage errors, standing water, a leaking gasket, severe vibration or a persistent odor after the approved cleaning cycle.
- Dishwasher: standing water, spray arms that do not turn, repeated filter blockage, leaks or cleaning results that worsen after the documented filter and nozzle checks.
- Oven or hood: smoke during ordinary cooking, a fan that loses airflow, grease dripping from the hood or controls that behave unpredictably.
Cleaning is not a substitute for diagnosis. If a warning sign remains after the manual-approved task, stop repeating the same cycle and arrange service.
Build a seasonal reminder system
Use the appliance’s manual to populate a calendar rather than applying one household-wide rule. A useful system has four layers:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Every use: remove dryer lint and wipe spills or food debris that the manual says should not remain.
- Monthly or condition-based: clean the refrigerator interior if your model and household need it; inspect seals and look for airflow or drainage changes.
- Every few months: inspect a refrigerator’s coils only when its design and environment justify it; clean the dryer lint-trap opening; perform washer or dishwasher care at the manual’s interval.
- Annual or seasonal: review refrigerator gasket and leveling, clean the dryer exhaust at least annually where the duct arrangement permits, and use the oven and hood schedule in the Use and Care Guide. Whirlpool’s checklist presents quarterly kitchen tasks as suggestions, not universal requirements.
What maintenance can—and cannot—promise
Routine care removes lint, residue and obstructions that can reduce performance or create hazards. It also gives you an opportunity to spot a failing seal, blocked vent, leak or error before secondary damage occurs. Those are practical benefits, but they are not a measured guarantee of additional service life.
The available manufacturer guidance does not provide a reliable, broadly applicable number of extra years produced by routine maintenance. Appliance lifespan depends on design, usage, installation, environment, load, repairs and many other variables. The defensible goal is narrower: follow the manual, keep airflow and seals in good condition, and respond promptly to symptoms instead of operating through them.
Maintaining home appliances therefore means matching each task to the exact model, its environment and your safety limits. Do the documented low-risk work consistently, and call a qualified technician when access, energy systems or uncertainty make the task unsafe.
