The oil, grease, quantity, application method and interval are model-specific. Find your wrench’s product information manual before copying any number from another model.
The practical routine is straightforward: identify the exact model, inspect the tool and accessories, disconnect and bleed the air supply before service, oil the motor as directed, grease the impact mechanism at its stated runtime interval, wipe away excess and record the service. The figures below illustrate manufacturer instructions; they are not a universal recipe for every pneumatic wrench.

Why an air impact wrench needs two lubricants
A pneumatic impact wrench contains an air motor and a separate hammer-and-anvil impact mechanism. Air-tool oil is intended for the motor’s moving parts and is introduced through the air inlet. Impact grease is intended for the hammer case, anvil and related impact parts, and is applied by the method specified for that model. Substituting one lubricant for the other can leave a component under-lubricated, contaminate parts or create an incorrect grease volume.

Ingersoll Rand’s 2922 Series guide, updated August 19, 2026, calls for 8–12 drops of #10 air-tool oil before each use and 4 cc of #170 grease after every 48 hours of accumulated runtime. Its general Impactool guidance, updated in 2024, gives 10–15 drops of #10 oil before use and before storage, while directing users to the specific manual for grease type and amount. Those values should not be merged into a single rule.

1. Identify the exact wrench and read its manual
Locate the model and series marking on the housing, nameplate or original documentation. Then find the product information manual for that exact model. Confirm all five of these details before opening a bottle of lubricant:
- Approved air-tool oil specification.
- Approved impact grease specification.
- Where oil is introduced: inlet, an approved oil port or another documented point.
- Where grease is introduced: grease fitting, removable plug or hammer-case service procedure.
- Quantity and interval, including whether the interval is based on trigger runtime, calendar time or a service event.
Ingersoll Rand’s maintenance guidance states: “Always check the Product information Manual to verify grease type and amount for a specific tool.” Treat that as a decision rule, not a formality. Manuals for different models can specify different lubricants and quantities, even within the same product family.
2. Gather lubricant and safety equipment
Use only the products named or approved in your manual. A typical setup may include the following:
- The specified air-tool oil for the motor.
- The specified impact-wrench grease, plus a compatible grease gun or nozzle if the wrench has a fitting.
- A clean cloth for wiping the inlet, fitting and excess grease.
- Eye protection.
- A container or tray for catching residue during an approved service procedure.
An air-care kit may combine air-tool oil, impact grease and a grease gun, but verify the contents and compatibility with your model. Do not assume a kit’s grease is suitable merely because it is marketed for pneumatic tools.
3. Inspect the wrench before connecting air
Inspection prevents lubrication from masking a dangerous mechanical problem. The 2922 Series guide directs operators to check the tool, hose, fittings, sockets and accessories for visible damage or excessive wear, and to make sure connections are secure.

- Look for cracks, damaged guards, loose fasteners, bent drive parts or leaking fittings.
- Check the air hose for cuts, abrasion and damaged couplers.
- Inspect sockets and extensions for deformation, cracks or excessive wear; remove damaged accessories from service.
- Confirm that the socket is the correct drive size and is fully seated on the anvil.
- Do not operate the wrench if any component is damaged or a connection cannot be secured.
4. Make the wrench safe before maintenance
Before adding oil or grease, close the air valve, bleed residual pressure and disconnect the hose. The Ingersoll Rand 2705P1 maintenance information states: “Always turn off the air supply, bleed the air pressure and disconnect the air supply hose when not in use, before installing, removing or adjusting any accessory on this tool, or before performing any maintenance on this tool or any accessory.” Wear eye protection while disconnecting or servicing the tool.
Do not remove a hammer case, plug or fitting while the tool is pressurized. Keep the trigger untouched during service and place the disconnected hose where it cannot be accidentally reconnected.
5. Lubricate the air motor through the inlet
Hand-oiling procedure
- Disconnect and bleed the wrench as described above.
- Wipe dirt from around the air inlet so contamination cannot enter with the oil.
- Measure the quantity specified by your model manual.
- Place the oil into the air inlet, not into the hammer-case grease fitting.
- Reconnect the hose only when the manual’s procedure requires it, and run the tool briefly at low load or in the manner specified to distribute the oil.
- Wipe away oil expelled from the exhaust or housing.
For the 2922 Series, the stated amount is 8–12 drops of #10 air-tool oil through the inlet before each use. That is a 2922 Series instruction, not a universal amount. In its broader Impactool guidance, Ingersoll Rand specifies 10–15 drops of #10 Air Tool Oil before use and before storage for the covered tools. Use the number in your own manual when the figures differ.
Inline lubricators
An inline air-line lubricator can provide oil to some pneumatic-tool installations, but it does not automatically satisfy the tool’s maintenance requirement. Ingersoll Rand’s guidance says an inline lubricator does not replace daily oiling of the tool. Set up, oil type and distance from the tool must follow the wrench and air-system instructions. If the manual calls for hand oiling through the inlet, continue that practice even when an inline lubricator is installed.
6. Lubricate the impact mechanism separately
Grease through a fitting
- Disconnect and bleed the air supply.
- Clean around the grease fitting or plug.
- Verify the grease grade and the quantity in the manual.
- Attach a compatible grease gun or nozzle and add only the specified amount.
- Remove the nozzle, clean the fitting and wipe away excess grease.
The 2922 Series guide specifies 4 cc of IR #170 grease after every 48 hours of accumulated runtime, delivered through its grease fitting. Do not use that amount for a different model without an explicit instruction.

Manual hammer-case service
Some wrenches require the hammer case to be removed so grease can be applied directly. Do this only when the model’s instructions call for it and you have the service competence, tools and replacement parts the procedure requires. Opening the case is not a routine shortcut for a wrench that has a grease fitting. Follow the manual’s disassembly order, cleanliness requirements, grease volume and reassembly torque; if those instructions are unavailable, use an authorized service center rather than guessing.

What “every 48 hours” means
The 2922 Series guide makes the qualification explicit: “The 48-hour interval refers to accumulated runtime—the amount of time the tool’s trigger is pressed—not 48 calendar hours.” A shop that runs a wrench for several hours each day will reach the interval sooner than an occasional user who operates it for a few minutes at a time.
Track trigger runtime as a running total. If your manual gives a different interval or defines a service event instead, use that definition. Do not reset the schedule based solely on the date on the calendar.
Model-specific quantities: examples, not a universal schedule
| Model or guidance | Motor oil instruction | Impact grease instruction | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ingersoll Rand 2922 Series guide (updated August 19, 2026) | 8–12 drops of #10 air-tool oil through the inlet before each use | 4 cc of #170 grease through the fitting after every 48 hours of accumulated runtime | Routine operator maintenance for the 2922 Series |
| Ingersoll Rand general Impactool guidance (updated 2024) | 10–15 drops of #10 Air Tool Oil before use and before storage | Verify grease type and amount in the model manual; general guidance refers to service after every 48 hours of tool runtime | Guidance for the covered Impactool tools, not every pneumatic wrench |
| Ingersoll Rand 2705P1 maintenance information | 1–2 cc during disassembly for maintenance or repair | 4–6 cc during disassembly for maintenance or repair | Model-specific service quantities, not a daily oiling instruction |
| Ingersoll Rand 2920B/2920B9 service lubrication | 1–2 cc of #50 oil | 12–15 cc of #170 grease | Model-specific service lubrication quantities, not a universal routine amount |
The differences are large enough to make guessing unsafe: the same manufacturer documents drops for one routine and cubic-centimeter quantities for another service operation. Preserve the model and service context whenever you record a quantity.
How to choose between hand oiling and an air-line lubricator
Hand oiling
- Best when the wrench is used intermittently or moved between compressors.
- Lets you measure the manual’s specified amount directly at the tool.
- Requires a repeatable pre-use routine and a clean inlet.
Inline lubrication
- Can suit a fixed shop installation designed for pneumatic tools.
- Requires correct placement, adjustment and compatible oil.
- Does not remove the requirement for the tool’s prescribed hand oiling; follow the manufacturer’s warning about daily oiling.
Whichever arrangement you use, avoid flooding the air line with oil. Excess oil can migrate into the exhaust, workpiece or surrounding surfaces without improving lubrication.

Symptoms of poor lubrication and what to check
The wrench loses power or stalls
First verify air pressure, hose size, couplers and the condition of the socket; lubrication alone cannot correct an undersized air supply or worn impact parts. Then confirm that the motor has received the specified inlet oil and that the impact mechanism has the correct grease. If the problem persists, stop using the tool and arrange qualified service.
The tool sounds dry, rattles or develops unusual vibration
Disconnect it, inspect the anvil, socket and housing, and check the service interval based on accumulated runtime. Do not add an unverified grease simply to quiet the tool. A damaged hammer, anvil or bearing requires diagnosis, not repeated lubrication.
Grease or oil leaks excessively
Wipe the exterior, check that the fitting, plug and seals are intact, and compare the amount applied with the manual. Continued leakage, a loose plug or grease expelled from a damaged seal is a service issue. Keep the wrench out of operation until the cause is corrected.
The trigger or motor feels sluggish after oiling
Excess oil, contamination or an air-system problem may be responsible. Disconnect the tool, wipe residue, check the inlet and couplers, and follow the manual’s cleaning and run-in instructions. Never flush the wrench with an improvised solvent unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Storage and longer periods between jobs
Clean the exterior and accessories, then apply the storage lubrication specified by the manual. Ingersoll Rand’s general Impactool guidance calls for 10–15 drops of #10 Air Tool Oil before storage for the covered tools; the 2922 Series pre-use quantity remains a model-specific instruction. After oiling, protect the inlet from dirt, store the wrench in a dry place and keep the hose disconnected.

Before returning a stored wrench to service, inspect it again, verify the socket and fittings, and perform the manual’s pre-use oiling procedure. Storage oiling does not replace impact-mechanism grease service when the accumulated-runtime interval has been reached.
A maintain-and-lubricate checklist
- Record the exact model and locate its current product information manual.
- Write down the approved oil, grease, quantity, application point and interval.
- Inspect the wrench, hose, fittings, socket and accessories for damage or wear.
- Shut off air, bleed pressure and disconnect the hose before maintenance.
- Oil the air motor through the inlet using the model’s stated amount.
- Grease the impact mechanism through its fitting or use the documented service procedure.
- Wipe away excess lubricant and clean the fitting or inlet.
- Record accumulated trigger runtime and the date of each service.
- Stop and obtain qualified service if the tool leaks, vibrates unusually, loses power after correct lubrication or has damaged components.
When professional service is the right choice
Use qualified service when the manual requires hammer-case disassembly that you cannot perform confidently, when seals or bearings are damaged, when the wrench has persistent power loss or abnormal noise, or when the required lubricant and quantity cannot be identified. A grease fitting is not permission to disassemble the impact mechanism, and a familiar-looking wrench is not proof that another model’s service data applies.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use ordinary motor oil in the air inlet?
Use the air-tool oil specified by the wrench manual. The cited Ingersoll Rand instructions identify #10 air-tool oil for particular models; they do not authorize substituting automotive or household oil.
Can I put air-tool oil into the hammer-case fitting?
No. The air motor and impact mechanism have separate lubrication points. Use the impact grease and application method specified for the mechanism on your model.
Is a 48-hour interval two days on the calendar?
Not in the 2922 Series guidance. Its 48-hour interval counts accumulated time with the trigger pressed. Other models may define service differently, so check the applicable manual.
How much grease should be added when the fitting feels full?
Do not judge by resistance or by a full-looking fitting. Add only the documented quantity; overfilling can force grease past seals and does not improve the wrench.
Should I remove the hammer case for every lubrication?
No. Remove it only if the model’s service instructions require direct manual greasing and you can complete the procedure safely. A model equipped with a grease fitting should be serviced through that fitting as directed.
