Before putting the prosthesis on
Check the residual limb
Look for redness, irritation, swelling, abrasions, blisters, or open areas. If the wearer has reduced sensation or circulation problems, use both sight and touch where appropriate, or ask a caregiver to help. Gillette Children’s advises not putting the prosthesis back on if there is a blister or open area; contact the prosthetist. Gillette Children’s prosthesis-care guidance and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab guidance also recommend monitoring skin condition.

Look over the device without taking it apart
Check for cracks, bent or displaced pieces, corrosion, dirt or sand, and connections that appear loose. Notice whether the device looks different from its normal condition. Make sure any straps, sleeves, or suspension components are positioned as their instructions specify. There is no established bicycle-part-specific joint checklist or user torque check for this device, so do not infer one from ordinary bicycle maintenance.

After wear: check for changes and warning signs
Recheck skin and fit
Remove the prosthesis and inspect the skin again. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab advises stopping use and contacting the prosthetist or physician if redness lasts more than 15–20 minutes after removal. Stop using it and report abrasions or wounds. New pain, instability, a socket that feels too tight or too loose, or a changed walking pattern are reasons to contact the prosthetist rather than trying to correct the fit yourself. Stop for unusual mechanical signs
New or unusual noises, black dust, metallic dust, visible damage, or an apparent change in a connection should prompt you to stop using the prosthesis and contact the prosthetist. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab specifically identifies unusual sounds and black or metallic dust as warning signs. Do not try to locate a suspected problem by loosening bicycle-style fasteners or moving components.
Clean only as the device instructions allow
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab recommends cleaning the socket interior daily with mild soap and water and says not to submerge it. Follow the specific manufacturer’s directions for the liner, socks, sleeves, and other interfaces. Ottobock likewise recommends regular socket and liner care, avoiding high heat, and not disassembling the prosthesis; see its prosthetic care guidance.

Keep dirt, sand, and debris away from the prosthesis. LimbPower advises avoiding getting it wet unless the manufacturer permits it. A build that combines bicycle and prosthetic components may include materials or finishes with different care limits, so do not assume that water, solvents, oil, or household cleaners are safe. Use only cleaning products and methods approved for the actual components.

Do not disassemble, modify, tighten, lubricate, or repair the assembled prosthesis yourself. Gillette Children’s says component changes should be made by a qualified prosthetist. EnableNSW advises against self-repair and says maintenance and repairs should be arranged through the prosthetist and an accredited manufacturer. A historical paper describes an adjustable bicycle limb, but it is not a service manual for this particular prosthesis and does not make home adjustment appropriate. The paper is available from the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.

Before relying on a routine, ask the wearer’s prosthetist or builder to provide the actual device’s inspection intervals, component limits, permitted cleaning products, exposure-to-water limits, and replacement schedule. The general annual-checkup recommendation from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is not a substitute for the schedule set for this device.
