The safest electric-tricycle maintenance routine is simple: inspect the tires and brakes before each ride, follow the battery and charger instructions for your exact model, and stop riding when a fault exceeds a basic owner check. There is no universal battery-storage percentage, tire pressure, brake adjustment, or service interval. Battery chemistry, tire construction, valve type, and brake design all vary, so use your owner’s manual for the exact limits and procedures.
What to check before every ride
A short pre-ride inspection catches the problems most likely to cause a loss of control or a breakdown. Park the tricycle on a stable surface, switch it off, and look and feel rather than relying only on the display.

- Tires: Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, embedded glass, and obvious under-inflation. Verify pressure using the value printed on the tire or specified in the tricycle manual.
- Brakes: Apply each brake while stationary, then test braking at walking speed in a clear area. The trike should slow and stop predictably without a spongy lever, scraping, pulling to one side, or fluid leak.
- Battery and cables: Check the battery case, mounting points, connector area, and visible cables for cracks, looseness, moisture, heat damage, or dirt. Do not ride with a battery that is swollen, leaking, or unusually hot.
- Controls and hardware: Confirm that the battery is latched, wheels and axle hardware appear secure, and steering and pedals move normally.
Vermeiren’s tricycle maintenance manual lists tire, brake, battery-condition, and cable checks before each ride, while noting that its instructions are model-specific and dated May 2015. Use that checklist as an example of the inspection frequency, not as a substitute for the manual supplied with your tricycle: Vermeiren Maintenance Manual: Tricycles.

Battery maintenance and charging
Start with the battery maker’s instructions
Charging cadence, storage state, temperature limits, and end-of-life behavior depend on the battery chemistry, battery-management system, charger, and tricycle design. Do not apply a generic percentage or charging schedule found online. Use the supplied charger or the exact replacement approved by the tricycle or battery manufacturer.

For example, the PAIRA Electric Tricycle User Manual asks owners to check battery level and status monthly and to give the battery a full, slow charge once a month. That is a PAIRA manual instruction, not a universal requirement for every electric tricycle. Read the complete manual here: PAIRA Electric Tricycle User Manual.
Safe charging routine
- Inspect the battery housing, charger, plug, and cable for cracks, crushed sections, exposed conductors, corrosion, or heat discoloration.
- Make sure the charging socket and connector are dry and free of grit. Never force a connector or charge through a damaged cable.
- Place the tricycle or removable battery where the charger manufacturer permits charging, away from flammable materials and sources of water or heat.
- Connect the charger in the sequence specified by your manual. Some systems require the charger to be connected to the battery before the wall outlet; others specify the opposite.
- Confirm that the charger’s indicator behaves as described in the manual. An unexpected flashing pattern, no indicator, repeated fault code, or rapidly hot charger is a reason to stop and investigate.
- When charging is complete, disconnect using the prescribed sequence. Do not pull the cable by its wire, and do not substitute a different voltage or connector just because it fits.
The Electric Bike Technologies Electric Fat Trike manual specifically calls for a Schrader-compatible floor pump and warns users to use charging products supplied with that trike or obtained directly from its manufacturer. That accessory and charger guidance applies to that product; verify the requirements for your own model in its manual: ElectricTrike 062822 Electric Bike Owner’s Manual.
Monthly and periodic battery checks
If your manual specifies a monthly status check, record the date and any change in displayed capacity, range, charging time, or error messages. A sudden range loss, battery that will not accept a charge, repeated cut-outs under load, swelling, odor, liquid, or abnormal heat is not a routine adjustment. Turn the system off, isolate the battery as the manual directs, and contact an authorized service provider.

Storage
Use the battery maker’s storage state, temperature range, and maximum storage period. Before a long storage period, clean and dry the battery and contacts, secure a removable battery against falls, and check its status at the interval specified by the manufacturer. Never store or charge a damaged or swollen pack. If the manual requires a periodic slow charge, set a calendar reminder rather than guessing from the display alone.
Tire inspection, pressure, and inflation
Inspect the tire itself
Check tread and sidewalls for cuts, cracks, bulges, abrasion, embedded objects, and uneven wear. Pay particular attention to the load-bearing rear tires and to wear concentrated on one edge, which can indicate alignment, axle, loading, or inflation problems. Replace a tire when the tread or casing is damaged beyond the limit stated by the tire or tricycle manufacturer; do not attempt to repair a sidewall injury with sealant.
Use the specified pressure, not a generic PSI
Find the correct pressure on the tire sidewall, wheel label, or owner manual and use a gauge. A mobility-tricycle manual cited by Vermeiren includes pressure checks before every ride, but it does not establish one pressure for all tricycles. Tire width, load rating, wheel size, rider and cargo weight, and road use all affect the appropriate value.

Inflate correctly
- Identify the valve before choosing a pump. The Electric Bike Technologies Electric Fat Trike uses a Schrader valve and specifies a bicycle floor pump compatible with Schrader valves and an analog gauge.
- Remove the cap and check that the valve stem is straight and undamaged. Do not use pliers to hold a normal valve stem while inflating.
- Set the pump head squarely on the valve, inflate in short strokes, and read the gauge with the pump at rest.
- Stop at the pressure specified for your exact tire and load. Refit the cap and check that the valve does not leak.
If pressure drops repeatedly, submerge an inflated inner-tube assembly only when the wheel and tire design permits it, or use soapy water around the valve and tread to locate bubbles. Remove the wheel or tire for a puncture repair only if your manual permits owner service and you have the correct tools; otherwise use a qualified bicycle or mobility service technician.
Pressure and handling symptoms
- Too little pressure: Heavy steering, rim strikes, squirming in turns, increased rolling resistance, and pinch flats.
- Too much pressure: A harsh ride, reduced contact on uneven surfaces, and a greater chance of losing grip on loose roads.
- Uneven pressure: Pulling, unstable cornering, or different braking behavior between wheels.
Check pressure when the tires are cool and recheck after transporting the tricycle, changing a tube, or carrying a substantially different load.
Brake checks and service
Perform a functional test
Before riding, squeeze or operate each brake independently. At very low speed on level ground, confirm that the tricycle stops in a straight, controlled manner. Check for excessive lever travel, a soft or pulsing feel, scraping, grinding, intermittent engagement, or a brake that remains partially applied. Inspect pads, rotors, cables, hoses, mounting hardware, and visible leaks where those parts are present.
PAIRA’s maintenance section calls for checking brake-system wear and adjustment and, where applicable, checking hydraulic-oil level and leaks. Vermeiren also places brake checks in its before-every-ride inspection. The manuals do not establish a universal pad-thickness limit, lever travel, or adjustment method, so use the procedure and wear limits for your brake model.

Mechanical and hydraulic systems are different
Mechanical brakes use a cable or linkage and may require cable-tension or pad-position service. Hydraulic brakes use fluid, hoses, seals, and a bleed procedure. Xion’s commercial pedicab specifications, for example, use hydraulic disc brakes; that specification cannot be transferred to another tricycle. Never add fluid until you have confirmed the exact brake system and the fluid specified by its manufacturer. Mixing fluids or opening a hydraulic system without the correct bleed equipment can cause brake failure.
When adjustment is appropriate
An owner may be able to perform a basic cable adjustment or pad replacement when the manual explicitly describes it and the correct model-compatible parts are available. Make one change at a time, tighten fasteners to the specified torque when a torque value is provided, and perform a stationary and low-speed test afterward. If braking remains weak, noisy, uneven, or contaminated, stop riding until the system has been inspected.
Hydraulic leaks, damaged hoses, a cracked rotor, a seized caliper, stripped mounting threads, or uncertainty about the brake design require qualified service. PAIRA recommends professional repair for faults an owner cannot solve, and Vermeiren states that its drive unit is to be serviced by an authorized service center. Those service boundaries are sensible for safety-critical repairs on any comparable system.

Choose parts and tools by specification
Before buying a pump, tube, tire, brake pad, charger, or connector, write down the tricycle’s make, model, wheel size, tire marking, valve type, battery voltage and connector, and brake manufacturer or model. Comparable-looking parts can have different dimensions, load ratings, electrical ratings, friction compounds, or fluid requirements.

- Pressure tool: A floor pump with a readable gauge is appropriate only when its head matches your valve. The cited Fat Trike manual specifies a Schrader-compatible pump.
- Tires and tubes: Match the complete size marking, load rating, construction, and valve length. Do not select solely by outside diameter.
- Brake parts: Match the caliper and pad shape, rotor diameter and thickness, cable or hose fittings, and the manufacturer’s fluid specification.
- Chargers: Match voltage, current, connector, polarity, and battery-management requirements. A connector that fits physically can still be electrically unsafe.
Keep the original manuals and any service receipts with the tricycle. They provide the pressure, torque, fluid, charging, storage, and replacement limits that a generic maintenance checklist cannot.
Troubleshooting: stop, inspect, or service

Do not test a questionable repair in traffic, on a slope, or with a passenger. Use a clear, low-speed area only after the manual permits the work and the tricycle passes a stationary check.
When professional service is the right choice
Routine owners’ checks are limited to inspection, cleaning allowed by the manual, pressure adjustment, and clearly documented minor adjustments. Seek an authorized or qualified technician for battery-pack opening, electrical fault diagnosis, charger replacement, hydraulic bleeding, leaking brakes, structural wheel or axle damage, repeated tire failures, or any issue that affects stopping or steering.
