Before any work, check the exact operator manual: blade removal, oil type and quantity, service intervals, cleaning restrictions, and winter fuel and battery steps vary by model and power source. The steps below use walk-behind gasoline mowers as the main example, not as a universal procedure.
How to sharpen or replace a mower blade
Work from your mower’s operator manual, including its instructions for disconnecting power, removing the blade, and reinstalling it. For a battery or electric mower, follow that model’s procedure rather than applying gasoline-mower steps.

- Make the mower safe. For the Husqvarna 7021P, the September 2016 manual instructs owners to disconnect the spark-plug wire before blade work. Use the isolation procedure specified for your own mower.
- Remove the blade according to the manual. On the 7021P, the manual describes turning the mower on its side with the air filter and carburetor facing up, blocking the blade against rotation with a wood block, and protecting hands with gloves or heavy cloth. These details are specific to that model.
- Check the blade’s condition. Replace a bent or damaged blade with a manufacturer-approved replacement matched to the mower. Do not assume a generic blade fits.
- Sharpen only if the blade is suitable and the manual permits it. The 7021P manual describes sharpening off the mower with a file or grinding wheel. It cautions that an unbalanced blade can damage the mower or engine.
- Check balance before reinstalling. The 7021P manual describes checking the blade on a steel bolt or pin, or with a cone balancer. If one end tips down, remove material from the heavy end and check again. Follow your mower’s own instructions for reinstallation; no universal torque value applies.
Sharpening and replacement are not interchangeable choices: sharpening is appropriate only for an undamaged blade that can be serviced as the manual allows; replace a bent or damaged blade using an approved part. If you cannot safely remove, sharpen, balance, or reinstall it, use a qualified service provider.
How to clean a mower deck and inspect the machine
Remove built-up clippings and debris from under the deck and from the engine surfaces, following the manual’s safety and cleaning instructions. The Husqvarna 7021P manual says to scrape grass and trash from beneath the deck and keep engine surfaces clear; it warns that a clogged engine runs hotter and can have a shorter service life.

Cleaning methods differ by mower. Do not use a hose or pressure washer unless the manufacturer permits it. Husqvarna’s zero-turn storage guidance recommends thorough cleaning, including under the deck, and says to use degreaser and warm water rather than gasoline. It also advises checking for worn or damaged parts and tightening loose nuts and screws.
How to prepare a mower for seasonal storage
Follow the storage section of the exact manual. Fuel directions differ: some manufacturer guidance calls for stabilizing fuel in the tank, while other mower guidance calls for draining it. Do not combine those approaches or assume one rule applies to every machine.

Fuel-treated storage: Briggs & Stratton guidance
Briggs & Stratton’s general mower winterization page, updated January 13, 2026, recommends checking the operator manual, adding fuel stabilizer according to the product directions, keeping treated fuel in a full tank, and running the engine for a few minutes so the treated fuel circulates. It also recommends changing oil to the mower’s specified type and amount, checking the blade and air filter, and storing the mower in a dry area, under a cover or in a shed or garage. Treat these as that manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal requirement.
Zero-turn storage: Husqvarna guidance
Husqvarna’s US zero-turn guidance applies its preparation steps at the end of the season or after more than 30 days of inactivity. It describes either draining fuel or using stabilizer; with stabilizer, it says to run the engine for at least ten minutes so it reaches the carburetor. The page also lists cleaning, inspection, an oil change, battery removal, and dry storage. It warns against storing fuel indoors or in poorly ventilated areas where vapors could reach a flame, spark, or pilot light.

Petrol push-mower storage: Husqvarna guidance
Husqvarna’s US petrol push-mower help page advises emptying the tank before storage and using stabilizer in the last tank. If remaining fuel is not run through the mower, it says to take it to an applicable disposal location. That page recommends storing the mower locked, dry, and frost-free. Its battery advice varies with battery chemistry, so check the battery and mower manuals.
Fuel handling and disposal must follow your mower’s instructions and local requirements. Keep fuel away from ignition sources. Battery-powered models also need the storage procedure specified for their battery type; do not assume gasoline-mower winterizing steps apply.

When to use a service provider
DIY maintenance is reasonable only when the manual provides a procedure you can carry out safely with the right tools. Use a dealer or qualified repair provider if the blade is damaged, you cannot verify balance or correct installation, the engine or drive needs service beyond the manual’s owner-maintenance steps, or warranty terms require an authorized service provider. Check your warranty and manual for applicable service requirements.
