There is no safe universal hour-based cleaning interval: limits and procedures vary by engine, controller software, duty cycle and jurisdiction.
What the DPF does and why maintenance matters
A DPF sits in the diesel exhaust stream and captures particulate matter (PM). Combustible soot is burned during regeneration, reducing the filter’s restriction. Noncombustible ash remains in the filter and gradually occupies its channels; regeneration does not remove it. As soot or ash loading increases, exhaust back pressure rises, the engine may derate or shut down, and the aftertreatment system can request regeneration more often.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes the maintenance cycle this way: “Backpressure increases are caused by the short term build up of PM, which is remedied in the short term by regeneration. The long term build up of ash is remedied by periodic cleaning.” A pressure trend therefore matters more than a calendar date alone. EPA guidance calls for back-pressure monitoring to identify when maintenance is needed.

Filter service also protects the generator’s availability. A standby set that runs only during outages may spend long periods cold or lightly loaded. That operating pattern can prevent the exhaust from reaching the temperature needed for passive regeneration, leaving the controller to request an active or forced event. Correct exercise, clean fuel and oil, and prompt attention to alarms reduce the chance that a brief emergency run becomes a derate or shutdown.

Start with the exact engine and generator manuals
Use the engine operator manual, generator manual and aftertreatment/controller documentation for the complete procedure. The engine family, emissions tier, controller software and installation determine the permitted regeneration mode, interlocks, pressure limits, exhaust-temperature limits and service actions. A procedure that is correct for one model can be unsafe or invalid on another.
- Identify the generator make and model, engine model or family, controller version and country of installation.
- Locate the sections covering DPF loading, differential-pressure sensors, regeneration, exhaust temperature, derate/shutdown alarms and ash service.
- Record the manufacturer’s limits and required load, duration and temperature for exercise operation.
- Follow the stated fuel grade, oil specification and low-ash oil requirement. Do not substitute a generic oil solely because its viscosity appears similar.
Do not change controller settings, bypass interlocks or initiate a forced regeneration based on a generic internet procedure. The manual’s sequence and safety conditions control.
Owner checks versus technician work
| Task | What an owner or operator can normally do | When trained service is required |
|---|---|---|
| Documentation | Keep the manuals with the generator and record operating hours, loads, temperatures, alarms and regeneration events. | Interpretation of fault histories or software parameters that the manual reserves for service personnel. |
| Fuel and oil | Use the specified diesel fuel and low-ash oil; check levels and look for leaks according to the manual. | Diagnosis of excessive oil consumption, injector problems, turbocharger faults or other causes of abnormal particulate production. |
| Exercise runs | Start, load and stop the set using the approved operating procedure and required clearances. | Changing load-bank arrangements, controller configuration or protection settings outside the operator instructions. |
| Monitoring | Read displayed differential pressure, exhaust temperature, soot load and regeneration status where the controller provides them; log the values. | Calibrating or replacing pressure and temperature sensors, wiring or control modules. |
| Automatic regeneration | Allow an automatic event to finish when the manual permits it and the site is safe. | Forced or parked regeneration, especially after repeated failures, high-pressure alarms, derate or shutdown. |
| Filter service | Inspect the area for damage or blocked outlets without opening the DPF housing. | Filter removal, ash cleaning, crack inspection, flow testing, installation or replacement. |
Only the manufacturer’s documentation can define what “owner” means for a particular installation. If a task is not explicitly permitted in the operator section, treat it as technician work.

- Confirm the operating plan. Before every scheduled exercise, check the required load, minimum run time, ambient restrictions, transfer-switch status and any site rule that affects exhaust heat. Read the regeneration instructions before changing the load.
- Inspect the exhaust path. Verify that the outlet, rain cap, silencer and surrounding area are unobstructed. Maintain the combustible-clearance distances specified for the installation. Remove leaves, packaging and stored materials from the hot-exhaust zone without touching hot components.
- Use compliant consumables. Fill with the specified diesel fuel and use the specified low-ash engine oil. Do not add unapproved fuel or oil additives. Poor fuel quality, excess oil consumption and engine faults can increase particulate production and overload the DPF.
- Run the set at the OEM load. Exercise for the manufacturer’s stated duration and load rather than relying on a short no-load start. Normal loaded operation can provide passive regeneration when exhaust temperature is high enough. If the manual requires a load bank, transfer load or other arrangement, use that arrangement exactly.
- Observe the aftertreatment display. During and after the run, note differential pressure or back pressure, exhaust temperature, soot-load indication and every regeneration, high-temperature, derate or shutdown alarm. Record engine hours and load so that trends can be compared from one inspection to the next.
- Let permitted automatic regeneration complete. If the controller starts an automatic event, keep the generator in the operating state required by the manual and site safety plan. Do not interrupt it by opening a breaker, stopping the engine or removing a required load unless the manual directs you to do so.
- Close out the run. After cool-down and shutdown, check for new leaks, damaged wiring, unusual soot deposits or an alarm that returned. Enter the result in the maintenance log and escalate any abnormal trend rather than resetting it repeatedly.
The procedure above is a framework, not a substitute for the model-specific sequence. A Multiquip generator manual, for example, specifies controlled breaker and load conditions during forced regeneration; other generator models use different conditions.

How regeneration works
| Mode | What happens | Typical trigger or limitation | Operator action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive regeneration | Soot burns because normal exhaust temperatures are high enough during loaded operation. | Requires a duty cycle that produces sufficient temperature; light or no-load running may not achieve it. | Operate at the OEM-required load and duration, and monitor the status shown by the controller. |
| Active regeneration | The system adds fuel, heat or another controlled strategy to raise exhaust temperature and burn soot. | Used when normal operation does not maintain the required temperature. | Provide the load, clearance and operating conditions specified by the manual; do not alter settings. |
| Forced or parked regeneration | A stationary, commanded event raises temperature under a defined interlock sequence. | Usually requested after soot loading reaches a threshold or normal events fail; exact permissions differ by model. | Use qualified service personnel unless the manual explicitly authorizes a trained operator procedure. |
Regeneration burns combustible soot only. It cannot restore the original ash capacity of a filter. A completed regeneration therefore does not prove that the DPF is clean or that a high-pressure trend has been corrected.
What to measure and how to interpret trends
Differential pressure or back pressure
A differential-pressure sensor compares exhaust pressure before and after the DPF; some systems display a related back-pressure value. Rising pressure at a comparable engine load and speed indicates increasing restriction from soot, ash or a fault elsewhere. Caterpillar identifies a plugged DPF as a cause of increased exhaust back pressure and describes differential-pressure gauges as a measurement method. Use the value and test conditions specified by the engine manufacturer rather than a generic threshold.
Trend readings under similar conditions: engine speed, load, exhaust temperature and sensor status all affect the number. A single reading taken during a cold start or unusual load is not equivalent to a stabilized loaded reading. Never disconnect a pressure line or sensor merely to make an alarm disappear.

Exhaust temperature
Temperature confirms whether the set is reaching the conditions needed for passive or active regeneration and warns that a regeneration event is producing unusually hot exhaust. Compare the display with the manual’s expected range. An implausible reading, a sudden jump or a value that never changes can indicate a sensor, wiring or controller problem and requires diagnosis.

Soot load and regeneration history
Record soot-load indications, regeneration requests, completed events and aborted events. A request that clears after a completed event is different from a request that returns quickly or cannot complete. Repeated requests often point to insufficient temperature, excessive particulate production, a pressure-sensor problem or ash restriction; the history helps a technician separate those possibilities.
Why low-load exercising can clog a DPF
Short, lightly loaded exercise runs may start the engine without generating enough exhaust heat for passive regeneration. Soot then accumulates between runs, and the controller may call for active or forced regeneration. Low load is not the only possible cause: poor engine condition, excessive oil consumption, incorrect fuel or a faulty sensor can also increase loading or create false indications.
Use the manufacturer’s required load and duration, which may involve the building load, a load bank or another approved arrangement. Do not infer an acceptable load percentage from another generator. If the site cannot meet the requirement, ask the generator service provider for an approved exercise plan rather than repeatedly running the set at no load.

- Use the manual’s breaker, transfer-switch and load conditions; a forced event may require a controlled electrical state.
- Stay within the site’s noise, emissions and operating restrictions, which can differ by jurisdiction.
Stop and escalate if smoke, flame, an abnormal odor, an uncontrolled temperature rise or a shutdown alarm occurs. Do not bypass a high-temperature or aftertreatment interlock.
Warning signs that require service
- Back pressure or differential pressure increases over successive comparable runs.
- The controller repeatedly requests regeneration, reports an incomplete event or shows regeneration as disabled.
- DPF, aftertreatment, high-temperature, derate or shutdown alarms appear.
- Pressure or temperature readings are implausible, intermittent or inconsistent with engine operation.
- A forced regeneration cannot complete under the manufacturer’s specified conditions.
- The engine produces unusual smoke, loses power, consumes excessive oil or has another condition that can create abnormal particulate emissions.
Capture the alarm text, fault code, engine hours, load, pressure, temperature and regeneration status before cycling power or clearing the message. A repeated reset can erase the evidence a technician needs and does not remove the underlying restriction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to clean the DPF and when to replace it
| Decision | What it addresses | Evidence needed | Who should perform it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal regeneration | Combustible soot accumulated during operation. | Controller request and operating conditions that meet the manual. | Operator may supervise an automatic event when permitted. |
| Professional ash cleaning | Noncombustible ash that regeneration cannot burn. | OEM service limit, pressure trend, inspection or measured flow/restriction. | Trained technician using a dedicated filter-cleaning process after removing the DPF. |
| Replacement | A filter that is cracked, melted, contaminated beyond the service limit or otherwise not recoverable. | OEM inspection criteria, damage assessment and exact engine compatibility. | Qualified generator or industrial-diesel technician. |
EPA notes that cleaning generally requires removing the filter and using dedicated equipment, and recommends trained technicians. Cleaning frequency depends on engine-out particulate emissions, duty cycle, regeneration effectiveness and measured pressure; it is not a universal number of operating hours. Use the OEM service limit to choose cleaning or replacement. A replacement must match the exact engine and emissions configuration, not merely the generator’s electrical rating.
EPA’s 2010 bulletin reports that verified DPF technologies typically achieved greater than 85 percent PM reduction. That is a performance statement for the verified technologies discussed in the bulletin, not a guarantee for every standby generator or a substitute for the engine manufacturer’s service criteria.

Troubleshooting common situations
The generator keeps requesting regeneration
- Check whether recent exercise runs met the required load, duration and temperature.
- Review whether each prior regeneration completed or was interrupted.
- Compare pressure and temperature readings with the manual under a comparable load.
- Inspect for engine conditions that create excess particulate matter, including oil consumption or poor combustion.
- Have a qualified technician test the pressure and temperature sensors and assess ash loading if the request persists.
A forced regeneration will not complete
Do not repeat the event indefinitely or override the interlocks. Confirm the exact load, breaker position, ventilation and clearance conditions required by the manual, then arrange service. Persistent failure can result from excessive ash, a plugged filter, a sensor fault, insufficient fuel or an engine problem; the fault history and measured values are needed to distinguish them.
The pressure alarm appears immediately after a regeneration
A regeneration may have reduced soot without removing ash, so a high restriction can remain. It can also reveal a pressure-sensor or hose problem. Stop treating the alarm as a simple soot request: preserve the readings and have the filter, sensor circuit and engine condition evaluated against OEM limits.
The controller shows an implausible temperature or pressure
Do not assume the DPF is plugged solely from a single displayed value. Sensor drift, blocked sensing lines, wiring damage or a controller fault can produce an incorrect indication. A technician should verify the signal with the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure before a filter is removed or replaced.
Keep a DPF maintenance log
A useful log lets the next operator and service technician see a trend instead of isolated alarms. For each exercise or outage run, record:
- Date, engine hours and reason for operation.
- Average and peak electrical load, plus the load arrangement used.
- Run duration and observed exhaust-temperature value or range.
- Differential-pressure or back-pressure reading and the conditions under which it was taken.
- Soot-load indication, regeneration mode, start time, completion status and any interruption.
- DPF, aftertreatment, derate, high-temperature or shutdown alarms and their fault codes.
- Fuel and oil used, oil additions, visible leaks, smoke or unusual sounds.
- Service actions, filter-cleaning or replacement records, sensor work and technician findings.
Use the log to compare like with like. A pressure value without load and temperature context cannot establish that the filter is healthy or restricted.
Questions to settle before calling for service
Have the generator make and model, engine family, controller version, installation country, current engine hours, recent load history, alarm text, regeneration history and pressure/temperature readings ready. Tell the provider whether the set can be loaded during a service event and whether any forced regeneration has already been attempted. This information helps the provider verify compatibility, select the correct cleaning or replacement path and avoid an unnecessary part change.
For a precise interval or replacement decision, the missing pieces are always model-specific: the OEM pressure threshold, ash-service limit, regeneration permissions, duty cycle and local emissions or fire-safety requirements. Until those are confirmed, continue only the operator checks explicitly allowed by the manual and keep the generator available under its approved operating plan.
