To lower the cost of a new Samsung Galaxy, compare the phone and wireless service together over the time you expect to keep the device. A carrier’s large trade-in credit may be offset by a more expensive required plan or by credits you forfeit if you switch; buying unlocked and using a prepaid bring-your-own-device plan may cost less, but depends on coverage, compatibility and the features you need.
Compare the total cost, not just the phone discount
Choose a consistent comparison period—such as 24 or 36 months—and total every cost and credit that applies during it. A useful comparison includes:

- The phone’s installments or unlocked purchase price.
- Trade-in value actually available for your device and its condition.
- Any required plan, including taxes, fees and activation charges.
- Upfront payments, including annual or multi-month service paid in advance.
- Any remaining device balance that could become due if you leave before paying it off.
- Bill credits you realistically expect to receive, plus the plan and service rules attached to them.
There is no universally cheapest route without knowing your ZIP code, usage, current carrier, Galaxy model and trade-in device. Compare the actual offers available to you, rather than treating an advertised credit or monthly equivalent as the final price.
Is a carrier trade-in deal worth it?
A carrier promotion may reduce what you pay for the handset, but a bill credit is not cash off at checkout. Samsung’s Galaxy offers page describes carrier offers paid as credits over installment terms and warns that changing to a lower qualifying plan can reduce or stop credits. The exact offer determines plan, service, account-standing, payoff and cancellation requirements; review those terms when purchasing because promotions can change.

Compare the total required plan cost for the whole period against the price of a plan you would otherwise choose. If you leave or become ineligible, account for credits you may lose and any remaining device balance that becomes payable under the offer terms. A higher advertised credit does not necessarily mean a lower overall bill.
Should you buy an unlocked Galaxy instead?
An unlocked purchase lets you compare providers and change service without choosing a carrier promotion first. The handset’s purchase price may be higher upfront, so compare that cost with the carrier route’s installments and expected credits, then add the cost of service for the same period.

FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez wrote in a 2024 handset-unlocking proposed-rulemaking proceeding: “Consumers who can afford to purchase an unlocked phone outright have the freedom to choose and switch between providers as they please.” That statement describes the flexibility of buying unlocked; it does not establish that every model works with every provider or that every financed phone is immediately unlocked. Check the exact phone’s compatibility and any unlocking terms before you buy.
Check the trade-in before counting its value
Trade-in offers depend on the exact device, its condition and ownership status. Samsung’s trade-in information sets out eligibility requirements; check the offer for your specific phone and confirm the return deadline and condition rules before relying on a quoted amount.

Samsung says a device with an outstanding installment balance must be paid off before trade-in, and leased devices are generally excluded unless purchased from the carrier. Also distinguish Samsung’s instant trade-in credit from carrier bill credits: Samsung says those discounts cannot be combined. Calculate the route you will actually use rather than adding both credits to one estimate.

Once you know the unlocked phone cost, compare service plans that accept your Galaxy. Look beyond the advertised monthly equivalent: check total taxes and fees, payment cadence, coverage where you live and travel, data limits, hotspot allowance and international use.

Make the decision with two complete totals
- Price the carrier offer. Add installments, required service, taxes and fees, and activation charges. Subtract only the credits you expect to keep under the offer’s terms. Include any device balance that would come due if you leave or lose eligibility.
- Price the unlocked route. Add the unlocked Galaxy price after any eligible instant trade-in, then add the plan’s charges, taxes and fees over the same period. Include any annual or multi-month service payment upfront.
- Check what each total buys. Compare coverage, data, hotspot and international features against your needs, as well as upfront cash and the flexibility to switch providers.
- Verify before ordering. Confirm the current promotion and credit rules, trade-in eligibility and deadlines, plan pricing, and compatibility of the exact Galaxy model. These terms are time-sensitive.
