How to Lower Your Household Energy Costs When Oil Prices Rise

When heating oil becomes more expensive, the fastest durable response is to need less heat: seal drafts, improve insulation, use thermostat schedules that fit your household, and check whether your boiler or furnace is operating properly. Then review bills by fuel and end use, reduce hot-water and appliance demand, compare local oil-payment options, and apply for assistance or weatherization if fuel costs are becoming unaffordable. The right combination depends on your climate, building, heating system, health needs and local programs.

Start with the part of the bill oil prices actually affect

An oil-price increase does not raise every energy charge in the same way. A home with an oil-fired boiler or furnace feels the change directly in heating-oil purchases. Electricity, natural-gas and water-heating charges follow different markets and may not move with crude-oil prices. Separate your bill into heating oil, electricity, gas and other charges before choosing a fix.

For an oil-heated home, reducing heat demand is usually the most direct protection against a higher fuel price. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) recommends caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows, insulating attics and walls, and lowering thermostat settings. Those measures reduce the amount of heat your system must produce; they do not depend on predicting the next oil-price movement.

Do not assume that a measure that works in one building will produce the same result in another. A drafty older house, a well-insulated apartment, a mild coastal climate and a cold continental climate have different opportunities. Comfort, indoor-air quality, moisture, frozen-pipe risk and medical needs also limit how far you should reduce heating.

Audit your bills before spending money

Use your own consumption history to find the largest practical opportunity. Australian Government household guidance recommends comparing energy use over the same period in the previous year and targeting major energy uses first. The approach is useful anywhere, but Australian tariffs, seasons and examples do not automatically apply to other countries.

  1. Collect 12 to 24 months of bills. Record delivery dates and gallons or litres of heating oil, electricity and gas used. Note estimated versus actual meter readings.
  2. Normalize for weather where possible. Compare the same months and mark unusually cold or warm periods. A colder winter can hide the effect of a thermostat change.
  3. Separate fixed and variable charges. A lower fuel volume will not remove delivery fees, standing charges or taxes, so identify which portion can actually change.
  4. List operating events. Note a new occupant, a vacant room, a boiler repair, a delivered oil fill, a change in water-heating fuel or extended work-from-home hours.
  5. Inspect the largest uses first. Space heating generally deserves attention before small plug loads in an oil-heated home; hot water may be a major use when it runs on electricity, gas or oil.

Keep a simple log after each change: date, thermostat schedule, outdoor conditions, oil quantity delivered and indoor comfort. A change that saves fuel but creates dampness, unsafe temperatures or excessive auxiliary-heater use is not a successful household strategy.

Cut drafts first: weather stripping and caulk

Air leakage lets heated air escape and cold air enter. EIA specifically recommends caulking and weather stripping around windows and doors to reduce heating-oil use. These are relatively small jobs, but the correct material depends on the gap, the surfaces and whether the joint moves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to look

  • Exterior door jambs, thresholds and the meeting rail of double-hung windows.
  • Cracked or missing caulk where a stationary window frame meets the wall or trim.
  • Basement and attic access doors, hatch panels and pull-down stairs.
  • Utility penetrations for pipes, wires and ducts, provided sealing will not block required ventilation.
  • Damaged gaskets around storm doors and removable window panels.

Choose the treatment for the gap

Condition Typical treatment Important limitation
Moving door or window edge Compressible weather stripping or a replacement gasket It must close without preventing the latch from engaging.
Stationary exterior joint Exterior-rated caulk compatible with the frame and siding Do not seal a joint designed to drain water or accommodate movement.
Large irregular opening Repair the framing or use an appropriate backer and sealant Expanding foam can distort frames and should not block combustion-air openings.
Door-bottom gap Door sweep or adjustable threshold seal Keep required egress and drainage clear.

Clean and dry surfaces, follow the product’s temperature range and test the door or window before the sealant cures. Never seal intentional ventilation, flue outlets, combustion-air inlets or other openings required by a heating appliance. If you smell combustion products, see soot or suspect inadequate ventilation, stop and have the system inspected by a qualified technician.

Insulate the attic and walls when the building needs more than a seal

EIA names attic and wall insulation as measures that can reduce heating-oil consumption. Insulation is a larger project than applying weather stripping: the best material and thickness depend on the existing assembly, moisture conditions, access, local code and whether the wall contains electrical or plumbing hazards.

Attic priorities

In many houses, an accessible attic offers the clearest insulation opportunity. Before adding material, locate roof leaks, protect recessed fixtures according to their ratings, seal penetrations between the living space and attic, and maintain required eave ventilation. Covering wet insulation or blocking soffit airflow can create mold and roof damage.

Wall and floor work

Wall insulation may require opening finishes or professional dense-pack work. In homes over unconditioned basements or crawl spaces, floor insulation and rim-joist air sealing may matter, but moisture control and pest conditions must be addressed first. Get an assessment when the assembly is inaccessible or shows condensation, staining or drafts that cannot be traced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask contractors to describe the air-sealing work, insulation level, moisture safeguards and areas they will not disturb. A low-cost draft-sealing task and a whole-attic retrofit should not be judged by the same payback expectation.

Use thermostat setbacks without compromising health or equipment

Lowering thermostat settings is one of EIA’s recommended ways to reduce heating-oil use. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says turning a thermostat back 10% to 15% for eight hours can save as much as 10% per year on heating and cooling bills. That is a conditional potential, not a typical or guaranteed saving; actual results depend on the building, weather, system and schedule.

Australian Government guidance gives 18°C to 20°C as an example winter-heating range. It is Australian guidance, not a universal prescription. The same guide estimates that each extra degree increases heating and cooling energy use by 5% to 10%; treat that as a government-guide estimate, not a promised dollar reduction.

Build a schedule around occupancy

  • Use a lower, safe setting during predictable absences and sleeping hours if the house and heating system tolerate the recovery period.
  • Keep enough heat to protect occupants, plumbing and vulnerable materials during cold weather.
  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using aggressive setbacks on steam, radiant, heat-pump or multi-zone systems. A control strategy designed for a forced-air furnace may not suit every system.
  • Place the thermostat on an interior wall away from sunlight, drafts, cooking heat, supply registers and doors.
  • After changing a schedule, watch recovery time, boiler or furnace cycling, humidity and comfort for several days.

People who are older, ill, very young or otherwise sensitive to cold may need warmer settings. Never trade safe indoor temperatures for a theoretical saving. If a room becomes damp or condensation appears, correct the moisture problem rather than simply lowering the setpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heat only the rooms and hours that make sense

Australian guidance suggests heating only rooms in use and using thicker bedding so heating does not run unnecessarily overnight. These are options to evaluate, not universal instructions. Closing vents or radiators too aggressively can upset system balance, create cold surfaces and encourage condensation; follow the heating-system manufacturer’s or technician’s advice.

A practical room-use check

  1. List rooms that are occupied daily, occasionally and rarely.
  2. Check whether each zone has a controllable radiator, valve, damper or thermostat.
  3. Keep doors open where the system requires air circulation, and never block return grilles.
  4. Protect pipes in rooms that are allowed to cool, especially during freezing weather.
  5. Recheck comfort and humidity rather than assuming an unused room can be left unheated indefinitely.

Warm clothing and bedding can reduce the hours a bedroom needs active heating, but they are not substitutes for safe temperatures. Portable heaters can erase savings through high electricity use and introduce fire risks; use only equipment approved for the location and follow clearance instructions.

Reduce hot-water and appliance demand separately

Oil-price advice should not ignore other energy uses. Australian Government material says hot water accounts for around 25% of the average household energy bill in its context. That is an Australian government figure, with no publication date stated in the referenced search result; it is not a universal share for every country, fuel mix or household.

  • Hot water: Take shorter showers, repair leaks and consider a low-flow showerhead when it fits the plumbing and does not reduce necessary flow. This matters to an oil-price problem only if water heating uses oil or if reducing electricity or gas charges is also a goal.
  • Laundry: Run full loads and avoid washing a small load repeatedly. Use a lower-temperature cycle when fabrics and hygiene requirements allow.
  • Dishwashing: Run full loads and use the machine’s efficient cycle if it cleans adequately. Avoid pre-rinsing under hot water when scraping is sufficient.
  • Cooking and standby loads: Turn off equipment that does not need to remain on and avoid heating rooms with appliances not designed for that purpose.

Measure the fuel serving each use before buying equipment. A low-flow showerhead cannot lower an oil-heating bill if the water heater is electric and the oil-fired boiler is the dominant cost.

Check the heating system before assuming all extra use is unavoidable

A boiler or furnace that runs longer because of a failing nozzle, dirty filter, poor combustion, leaking distribution system or faulty control can consume more fuel without providing better comfort. Arrange maintenance according to the equipment maker’s schedule and local safety requirements.

  • Replace or clean air filters at the interval specified for the system and filter type.
  • Keep radiators, baseboards, registers and return grilles unobstructed.
  • Inspect exposed ducts and hot-water pipes for damaged insulation or leaks.
  • Have a qualified professional check combustion, flue performance, controls and oil-burner adjustment.
  • Install and test carbon-monoxide alarms as required locally, and keep them outside sleeping areas according to the alarm instructions.

Do not adjust burner settings, bypass safety controls or alter a flue yourself. Efficiency work that creates a combustion or carbon-monoxide hazard is never a valid cost-saving measure.

Decide whether a thermostat or other purchase fits

Purchases should follow the audit, not replace it. The comparison below shows what each option targets and what can make it unsuitable.

Measure or product category Targets Upfront effort Key fit and risk checks
Door and window weather stripping Air leakage and drafts Low to moderate; usually a small DIY repair Match the gap and surface; preserve drainage, latching and ventilation.
Caulk and stationary-joint repair Cracks around fixed frames and penetrations Low to moderate Use compatible exterior material and do not seal intentional openings.
Attic or wall insulation Heat transfer through the building envelope Moderate to high; assessment may be needed Address leaks, moisture, ventilation, wiring and local code first.
Programmable or smart thermostat Unnecessary heating hours and high setpoints Moderate installation effort Verify compatibility with oil boilers, furnaces, zoning, wiring and minimum-cycle requirements.
Low-flow showerhead Hot-water volume Low Relevant to the water-heating fuel and household flow needs; check plumbing fit.

A programmable control is not automatically an upgrade. Some oil-fired systems use wiring or control logic that a consumer thermostat does not support. Confirm terminal requirements, power source, heat type and zoning with the equipment documentation or an installer before purchase.

Plan oil deliveries and payment terms carefully

EIA says heating-oil consumers may arrange tank fills in late summer or early fall, when prices are generally lower, and that some dealers may offer budget plans or fixed-price protection. The EIA page was last updated October 13, 2023; it does not establish a current price or a quantified saving. Treat these as options to investigate with local suppliers, not guarantees.

Questions for a supplier

  • Is the quoted price fixed, capped, indexed or subject to a minimum volume?
  • What delivery fee, service charge, cancellation term and payment schedule apply?
  • Does a budget plan smooth payments without reducing the total seasonal cost?
  • What happens if market prices fall below a fixed-price contract?
  • What tank level and delivery lead time should be maintained during cold weather?

Compare the full contract, not just the advertised per-unit price. A lower seasonal bill can be defeated by a large minimum delivery, finance charge or early-termination fee. Do not empty a tank or delay a delivery to chase a forecast if doing so risks a heating outage or frozen plumbing.

Check assistance and weatherization before a fuel shortage becomes an emergency

U.S. households having difficulty paying for heat should check the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), state programs and weatherization assistance identified by EIA. Eligibility, funding, application windows and benefit amounts change, so use current official federal, state, tribal or local program pages and ask the administering agency what documents are required.

These U.S. programs should not be assumed to exist in another country. Elsewhere, contact the national or regional energy department, local council, utility hardship team or community energy service and ask specifically about bill assistance, emergency fuel delivery, energy audits and insulation grants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare an application packet

  • Recent heating-oil, electricity or gas bills and the account numbers.
  • Proof of identity, address, household size and income if the program requires it.
  • Landlord contact details when you rent or need permission for weatherization.
  • Information about an elderly, disabled or medically vulnerable resident, where relevant to priority rules.
  • Documentation of an empty or near-empty tank if seeking emergency fuel help.

Apply before the tank is empty. If a household faces an imminent shutoff or cannot maintain a safe temperature, tell the agency that it is an emergency and contact local emergency services for immediate safety concerns.

Use a priority order that matches your time and budget

Situation First actions Next decision
Money is tight this week Check assistance, stop obvious drafts, lower unnecessary heating hours safely, and ask the supplier about delivery and payment terms. Arrange an audit or weatherization assessment rather than buying several products at once.
Drafty house with accessible attic Weather-strip doors, caulk fixed joints and inspect attic air leaks. Compare an attic insulation and air-sealing quote with expected comfort and fuel-use improvement.
High bills but little visible draft Compare weather-normalized fuel use, inspect equipment and confirm thermostat operation. Have the boiler or furnace and distribution system professionally checked.
Oil is used only for space heating Prioritize envelope work and heating controls. Review hot-water and appliance measures separately for their own fuel savings.
Rental home or apartment Use removable draft treatments where allowed and report failed seals or equipment problems. Ask the landlord, utility or local agency about permitted weatherization and assistance.

Track whether each change worked

Record the date of every intervention, the oil delivered, thermostat settings, occupied rooms and notable weather. Compare fuel use over similar periods rather than judging a single delivery. If possible, use degree-day data from a reliable local weather source to distinguish a colder season from a less-efficient building.

Look for unintended effects: a room that becomes too cold, condensation on windows, a boiler that short-cycles, a thermostat that fails to recover, or a portable heater that increases electricity use. Reverse or modify the change causing the problem and obtain professional advice when the cause involves combustion, wiring, moisture or structural insulation.

Common mistakes that erase savings

  • Buying a thermostat without confirming compatibility with the oil-fired system.
  • Sealing combustion-air openings, flues or required ventilation while chasing drafts.
  • Adding insulation over roof leaks or blocking attic ventilation.
  • Turning heat down so far that pipes freeze or vulnerable occupants become unsafe.
  • Assuming an Australian percentage or temperature example is a universal rule.
  • Judging a delivery contract by its headline price while ignoring fees, minimums and cancellation terms.
  • Expecting weather stripping or caulk to produce a fixed percentage reduction; the result depends on the home’s leakage and construction.
  • Ignoring hot-water fuel: a shower measure cannot lower an oil-heating charge when the water heater uses another fuel.

A practical seven-day plan

  1. Day 1: Gather bills, record tank level, list heating zones and identify the fuel used for water heating.
  2. Day 2: Walk the building with a flashlight and tissue or smoke pencil where safe; mark drafts around doors, windows, attic hatches and penetrations.
  3. Day 3: Install correctly sized weather stripping or repair a small, non-ventilation-related caulk joint.
  4. Day 4: Review thermostat schedules, occupancy and health needs. Make one modest change and monitor comfort.
  5. Day 5: Check filters, registers, radiators and visible duct or pipe insulation; schedule professional maintenance if performance is suspect.
  6. Day 6: Ask local suppliers about delivery timing, budget plans and fixed-price terms, and compare the complete conditions.
  7. Day 7: Contact assistance or weatherization programs if payment is difficult, and request an insulation or energy assessment for larger work.

The sequence matters: reduce avoidable demand and secure assistance first, then commit to larger purchases or contracts based on measured household needs.
