The best route depends on your location, progress and inventory. Level 8 can send your character to a penalty location, where recovery takes more actions and may use resources.
How menaces work—and why level 8 matters
Fallen London’s four primary menaces are Wounds, Nightmares, Scandal and Suspicion. They commonly build up through Dangerous, Watchful, Persuasive and Shadowy activities, respectively. Menaces advance in change points (CP); when one reaches level 8, it can send your character away from ordinary London activities for a recovery sequence.

- Wounds: the slow boat.
- Nightmares: a dream-related penalty location. The destination can depend on circumstances such as whether you are at zee, a recurring-dream quality, or a Memory of Light.
- Scandal: the Tomb-Colonies.
- Suspicion: New Newgate Prison.
The exact options, requirements and costs are game-dependent and can change. The community-maintained Menaces guide is useful for finding routes, but check the current in-game storylet or card before committing.
Pick a recovery route that fits your situation
Before spending actions, check five things: whether the option is available where you are; whether it requires a friend or invitation; whether it consumes an item or currency; whether it is immediate, chance-based or card-dependent; and whether it raises another menace or affects a persistent quality. If a menace is close to level 8, favor a direct, eligible reduction over a slow or uncertain route.

- Have an eligible contact? Social actions can lower all four menaces, but they require the right friend, request or invitation.
- Playing solo? Look for a storylet or item that directly reduces the menace you need to lower. Some routes require later-game access, particular locations, prerequisites or an opportunity card.
- Need to decide between routes? Compare the listed CP reduction with actions required, eligibility, resource cost and side effects. A large per-action reduction is not necessarily efficient if it takes several actions to unlock or complete.
Lower Wounds
Social assistance and various in-game actions or items can reduce Wounds. One relatively accessible route is Time in Bed at Lodgings, but the listed option requires Wounds of at least 2 and can take three actions. Account for the whole sequence rather than judging it only by its per-action CP figure.
Other Wounds reductions depend on story progress, location or access to particular items. If Wounds are nearing level 8, compare those prerequisites with any available direct social help before choosing a slower route.

Lower Nightmares
Options listed for Nightmares include asking another player for help, a letter-based action, Time in Bed when its conditions are met, and consumables such as F.F. Gebrandt’s Superior Laudanum. Other actions depend on access to later-game areas; some options are event-limited. Check the current requirement in game, especially if you are relying on an event or an opportunity card.

Lower Scandal
Social routes include asking someone to help lay rumours to rest and sending a name written in Gant. Solo alternatives include certain storylet actions, opportunity cards, church services and Nikolas & Sons’ Instant Ablution Absolution. The guide lists that service as reducing Scandal by 1 CP.
These options are not interchangeable: access, card availability and prerequisites determine what you can actually use. Scandal at level 8 can send you to the Tomb-Colonies, so use a direct option if one is available and the menace is close to the threshold.

Lower Suspicion carefully
Suspicion has social and location-based reductions. In Spite, Confound the Constables is listed as reducing 3–4 CP when its Airs and Shadowy requirements are met. Other listed methods may require later-game access or several actions.

Use equipment to prevent future build-up, not cure a current menace
Menace-affecting equipment changes how much menace you gain from future actions; it does not directly lower a menace you already have. The wiki lists gear intended to reduce build-up for particular menaces, but marks its equipment section incomplete and warns that its formulas may be incorrect. Treat those items as possible prevention, not as a guaranteed numerical reduction or a recovery method.
