The short answer: in Grand Theft Auto VI, the most defensible pre-release strategy is to break the police’s line of sight, use Focus to check where officers are searching, and reduce the identifying information they may have about Jason and Lucia, their clothes and their vehicle. That is guidance based on Rockstar’s descriptions—not a tested, guaranteed escape sequence.
GTA VI has not released yet, so the exact wanted-level rules, star thresholds, clearing times and effects of changing clothes, switching vehicles, using a repair or respray shop, wearing a mask or separating the protagonists remain unverified.

What “losing the cops” is expected to mean in GTA 6
Rockstar has described a police system that remembers more about a suspect after the immediate chase than earlier games did. Losing visual contact may therefore end the most urgent pursuit without instantly erasing every piece of information officers have collected.

GamesRadar+ reported Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson saying: “We wanted to get past that thing we used to have where you could lose the cops instantaneously, and then they forget about you instantly. And we wanted them to have a bit more persistent memory.” The same report describes a mechanic called heat, represented by icons below the wanted level, showing information police know and can recognize. Clothes and a vehicle were given as examples.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
That means the practical objective is likely to have two parts:
- Break the active search: get out of direct pursuit and avoid being reacquired.
- Reduce recognition risk: if the game gives you a safe opportunity, change details police may have identified.
Neither part has been demonstrated as a final, guaranteed procedure. Treat it as the best current framework until the released game establishes the actual rules.
A careful, evidence-based escape sequence
The following sequence turns the published information into a launch-day plan without pretending that unreleased mechanics have been tested.
1. Stop trying to outrun an invisible checklist
When a pursuit begins, do not assume the police will simply forget you after a short delay or that driving fast in a straight line is enough. Nelson said the system is intended to make players “think more” rather than merely avoid familiar vision cones.
Prioritize breaking the officers’ ability to keep seeing or identifying you. Use streets, buildings and other obstructions that create separation instead of remaining on a long, exposed road. This is a tactical interpretation of Rockstar’s line-of-sight comments, not a confirmed route that clears a wanted level every time.
2. Break line of sight, then stop volunteering information
Once you are no longer being directly observed, avoid immediately returning to the same open route or passing back through the area where police are searching. The reveal reports do not establish a fixed concealment timer, a guaranteed number of turns or a specific distance that clears the level.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Do not read a temporary lull as proof that all risk is gone. Persistent memory and heat imply that the search may depend on what officers already know about your appearance, clothing, car or companion status.
3. Use Focus to understand the search
GamesRadar+ reported Nelson saying: “So, they don’t show up on the radar, they show up when you use Focus.” That is an important difference from older wanted-level habits. The reported interface does not simply place every pursuing officer on the minimap during a chase.
Use Focus when you need situational information rather than assuming the radar is a complete police tracker. A separate creator explanation cited in the same coverage says Focus can reveal cops through walls; that detail is a reported explanation, not a separately confirmed Rockstar specification. Check how Focus behaves in the final game before relying on it as a wall-penetrating detector.
4. Read the heat information before changing anything
If the released interface uses the reported heat icons, inspect what the game says police can recognize. The available descriptions specifically mention clothing and vehicles, while PC Gamer’s breakdown of the official reveal also says police may receive information about the protagonists’ appearance and whether they are together.
Use those indicators as clues about what remains risky. Do not assume every icon corresponds to one action, that removing an icon immediately clears a star, or that the order of changes matters; none of those details has been established.

PC Gamer reported that changing identified factors helps evade police. The factors described include:

- 8057168506976
- 10RID052
- the clothes being worn;
- the vehicle being used;
- the protagonists’ appearance; and
- whether Jason and Lucia are together.
This supports a conditional tactic: after breaking sight, look for whatever final-game interaction is provided to alter an identified factor. It does not support claims such as “changing clothes always removes a star,” “switching cars instantly clears the chase” or “splitting up guarantees safety.” The sources do not establish those outcomes, the required locations or the timing.
6. Reassess before returning to normal activity
Because police may retain information, wait for the game’s actual pursuit and heat indicators to change before treating the incident as over. If the system still marks an identifying detail, assume that being recognized again could restart pressure even after immediate officers have disappeared.
At launch, learn the feedback loop: what Focus shows, which heat icons change after an interaction, and whether police behavior differs when one or both protagonists are present. Those observations will be more reliable than importing a familiar tactic from an earlier game.
What police may know about you
The official reveal coverage gives GTA VI’s police more descriptive information than a simple “wanted” flag. PC Gamer reported that officers may know details about the player, the car, the clothes and whether the pair is together. Rockstar’s reported heat explanation also names clothing and vehicles as recognizable information.
| Possible identifying factor | What the reporting supports | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | Police may be able to recognize the clothes connected with the incident; changing them is described as helpful. | The interaction, location, timing and whether a change removes a specific heat indicator are not stated. |
| Vehicle | The vehicle may be part of the information police retain and recognize. | No confirmed vehicle-swap rule, required distance, ownership condition or guaranteed wanted-level result is published. |
| Appearance | The reveal reporting says police may receive a description of the player’s appearance. | The exact appearance variables and how the game lets you alter them are unverified. |
| Being together | Police may know whether Jason and Lucia are together. | There is no confirmed rule that separating the protagonists removes a star or ends pursuit. |
The key distinction is between helping evade recognition and clearing the wanted level. The former is what the published description supports; the latter still needs to be demonstrated in the released game.
How wanted levels and heat may differ
A wanted level communicates the current police response. Heat, as described by Rockstar’s reported comments, communicates information police have about what to recognize. They may interact, but they should not be treated as identical meters.

GTABase’s October 4, 2026 guide describes a six-star structure and states that wanted states can include hollow, white, flashing and red presentations. It also explicitly says the exact requirements for each level have not been revealed. Because that is secondary reporting about an unreleased game, use it as a description of reported possibilities—not as a final chart of how many crimes, seconds or officers produce each star.

| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| How many stars are required for each escalation? | Not established. A secondary guide discusses six stars but says the exact requirements are unrevealed. |
| How long until a level disappears? | Not stated. No verified clearing timer is available. |
| Does losing sight instantly erase police memory? | Rockstar’s stated goal is the opposite: more persistent memory after pursuit. |
| Do clothing and vehicle changes guarantee a clear? | No. They are reported as helpful for evasion, not as guaranteed star-clearing actions. |
| Are police visible on the radar during pursuit? | Nelson was reported saying they do not simply show on the radar and instead appear when Focus is used. |
Why line of sight still matters
Persistent memory does not make line of sight irrelevant. Nelson’s comments specifically frame the challenge around thinking beyond traditional police vision cones. The likely lesson is to separate two moments: first, prevent officers from maintaining visual contact; second, deal with the information they already collected.
That changes how to interpret a successful maneuver. In an older-style chase, disappearing from the immediate search could be the entire solution. In GTA VI’s described system, it may only be the point at which you can safely address heat, change a recognized detail or wait for the search state to settle.
Because police reportedly do not remain plainly marked on the radar, Focus becomes the proposed awareness tool. Use it deliberately when you need to know whether an officer is nearby, rather than constantly expecting the minimap to reveal every patrol.

Wanted behavior is not described as an isolated free-roam feature. GamesRadar+ reported Nelson saying: “Anything where a mission can become systemic and it’s a wanted level or robbery system – we try to make it so that it doesn’t feel inconsistent with how the game works in the open world.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHe also described a sequence that can turn into a police chase with multiple routes out. This matters because a mission escape may not follow a scripted “drive to this marker” solution. A mission can present choices while still using the same wanted and recognition logic as the wider world.

- Dive into a blockbuster experience and immerse yourself in the journey of a guerrilla revolutionary.
- Explore the largest open world in Far Cry history, including the first ever sprawling urban city.
- Discover new animal companions like Chorizo, the adorable wiener dog, to take down enemies.

What to do during a mission chase
- Identify whether the chase is systemic. If the mission presents multiple exits or routes, do not assume only one marked path is valid.
- Use the available route to break observation. Choose cover and separation while watching how the game communicates pursuit.
- Check Focus rather than relying only on the radar. The reported police-awareness behavior applies to the broader pursuit concept, although mission-specific presentation may differ.
- Do not abandon the objective prematurely. A mission may require you to complete an action after escaping immediate pursuit; the published material does not provide a universal mission sequence.
There is no evidence that every mission allows every free-roam evasion option. Treat mission-specific prompts and objectives as authoritative when they conflict with assumptions from open-world play.
Common assumptions you should not rely on yet
| Assumption | Why it is unsafe |
|---|---|
| “Hide for a fixed number of seconds and the wanted level always disappears.” | No clearing time has been published, and persistent memory is a stated design goal. |
| “Police are always visible on the minimap.” | Nelson was reported saying police show up when Focus is used rather than simply appearing on the radar. |
| “A clothing change removes one star.” | Changing identified factors is described as helpful, but no star-by-star effect is confirmed. |
| “A vehicle swap guarantees safety.” | The vehicle may be recognized, but the interaction and result are unknown. |
| “Splitting Jason and Lucia always ends the chase.” | Being together may be information police know; no guaranteed separation result is reported. |
| “Pay ’n’ Spray, masks or a specific shop are confirmed solutions.” | The available material does not verify final effects for those features. |
| “The six-star requirements are already known.” | A secondary guide discusses six stars while acknowledging that exact requirements remain unrevealed. |
A practical launch-day checklist
Once GTA VI is available, use the first pursuits to learn the system rather than risking a major mission or valuable setup. This checklist separates what is supported now from what you need to verify yourself.
- Watch for the wanted-level and any heat indicators described in the interface.
- Test Focus in a safe situation and note what information it reveals about police locations.
- After breaking sight, observe whether officers continue searching for a recognized vehicle, outfit or appearance.
- When safe, change one identifying factor at a time so you can see which feedback changes.
- Record whether the game distinguishes between losing immediate pursuit and clearing retained information.
- Test Jason and Lucia together and separately only when a mission does not depend on their position.
- Do not infer a universal rule from one successful escape; repeat the situation under different wanted conditions.
Release, platforms and what is still unknown
Rockstar’s support information lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a scheduled release date of November 19, 2026. Rockstar also says the physical edition contains a digital download code in the box rather than a disc.

| Announced consoles | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S |
| Physical edition | A box containing a digital download code, not a disc |

Until launch, no responsible guide can provide a confirmed wanted-star escalation table, an exact escape timer, a guaranteed route, or a definitive answer about shops, masks, outfit changes, vehicle swaps or separating the protagonists.
The bottom line for escaping police in GTA 6
Plan to do more than disappear around one corner. Break line of sight, use Focus for situational awareness, and treat clothes, vehicles, appearance and the protagonists’ togetherness as possible recognition factors. Then wait for the game’s heat and pursuit feedback before assuming the danger has ended.
That is the strongest pre-release answer available. Rockstar has described the design direction, but GTA VI’s final implementation—not current speculation—will determine the exact steps that clear a wanted level.
