Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Loot a locked room as a short, controlled operation—not a sightseeing stop. Put the single-use key in a Safe Pocket, scout every approach and the nearest extraction, open during a quiet window, search the highest-value containers first, and leave as soon as the situation changes. Regular extraction controls are loud; a Raider Hatch is quieter but requires its own key. If Close Scrutiny forces an ARC response, smoke, a lure, or Photoelectric Cloak can give you the withdrawal window you need.
Why a locked-room run is dangerous
A key room concentrates several risks in one place. You must expose yourself while interacting with the door, spend time searching containers, carry valuable loot that makes a failed run costly, and then cross the map to an extraction point. Both ARC machines and rival Raiders can punish any delay. A room that appears empty can still be watched from a roof, tunnel, window, or nearby approach.

Noise is the risk you can control most directly. Container searches take several seconds and broadcast substantial sound. Extraction controls also make a loud, blaring noise. Those sounds can reveal your position to machines and players who were not previously involved. The safest run therefore minimizes the number of loud actions, performs them only after a deliberate scan, and keeps an escape route usable throughout.
Two kinds of threats
- ARC machines: Patrols can arrive while you are searching or extracting. A response may force you to abandon loot or fight in a poor position.
- Rival Raiders: Other players may already be rotating toward a valuable room, event, or extraction. They can hear the same interactions and may wait for you to finish.
Do not treat “no enemies visible” as “safe.” Treat it as a brief information state that must be updated before every loud action.

Prepare before you enter the map
Protect the key immediately
Keys are single-use consumables. Move the key into a Safe Pocket as soon as you acquire it, before you travel toward the room. Safe Pocket contents survive elimination, unlike ordinary carried equipment. This changes the decision you face after a bad fight: you may lose the run’s ordinary loot, but the key remains available for another attempt.
Do not leave the key in normal carried storage while scouting, fighting, or crossing an exposed area. A key that is still in your ordinary inventory is part of the run’s loss if you are eliminated.
Carry a response to forced attention
Bring tools that let you break contact rather than remain in a doorway trading fire. The documented options for an ARC response are:

- Lure Grenade: after looting, throw it opposite your intended escape route to pull attention away from your movement.
- Photoelectric Cloak: use it when you need the cleanest possible withdrawal from the room or its approach.
These items do not make the room safe by themselves. They buy a short movement window, so decide where that window leads before you trigger it.
Choose an extraction before opening
Identify the nearest practical extraction and at least one fallback route before interacting with the lock. Account for the approach, the final distance, and the sound profile of the extraction itself. A route that looks short on the map may cross open ground or funnel you through a predictable doorway.

Regular extraction controls are loud and can attract both human and machine enemies. Raider Hatches are quieter to use, but they require a Raider Hatch Key. If you do not have that key, do not plan as though a hatch is available; mark a conventional extraction and leave enough time to reach it after the search.
Scout the room and its approaches
Scouting is not a single glance at the door. Build a quick picture of who could reach you, from which direction, and where you can move if the picture changes.
Check sightlines
Look beyond the immediate entrance. Scan rooftops, windows, balconies, long corridors, open streets, bridges, and other positions that overlook the interaction point. A rival player does not need to stand beside the room to hear you and intervene. If a sightline covers the doorway or the likely exit, plan to cross it only after creating distance or concealment.
Listen before you commit
Pause for audio cues from ARC patrols, movement, combat, extraction activity, and other interactions. Sound can tell you that a route is occupied even when the occupant is hidden. A quiet period is useful only if you use it to perform the necessary actions quickly; waiting indefinitely can allow another Raider to arrive.
Count entrances and exits
Identify every usable entrance, not just the door you intend to open. Note whether an exit leads to cover, a dead end, an exposed street, or a route that passes another likely player position. Keep at least one exit available while searching. Do not let crates, the door frame, or your own position block the only route out.

Locate nearby ARC patrols
Observe patrol paths and the time it takes for them to pass the room. If a patrol is approaching, wait for it to move away rather than starting a several-second container search in its detection area. If the patrol repeatedly crosses the approach, choose whether the loot justifies the timing risk before you open the lock.

Compare room opportunities before spending a key
A key’s single-use cost means the best room is not automatically the room with the most attractive loot. Compare the whole operation:
| Decision factor | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Key rarity and cost | Is the key common enough to replace, or is this a one-time opportunity? | A rare key deserves a safer timing window and a clearer extraction plan. |
| Room position | How many entrances are there, and can another player watch them? | Multiple exits improve recovery; exposed or single-entry rooms make a failed search harder to survive. |
| ARC activity | Do patrols pass the room or its extraction route? | A quiet room can become unsafe during the search if a patrol cycle is ignored. |
| Expected loot | What containers are present, and which are likely to justify the key? | Prioritize value rather than opening every container by habit. |
| Extraction profile | Is the nearest extraction loud, and is a Raider Hatch available? | The final interaction may create more attention than the room itself. |
| Player traffic | Is the location associated with a high-value event, popular route, or contested objective? | Rival Raiders may arrive while you are inside or waiting outside. |
Documented room locations and rarities span Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, Blue Gate, Stella Montis, and Riven Tides. Use the map’s room position and current traffic, not the map name alone, to make the decision.
Open and search the room: a safe sequence
- Move the key to the Safe Pocket. Confirm it is protected before you approach the door.
- Stop outside the interaction point. Take one final look at sightlines, entrances, patrols, and the selected extraction route.
- Wait for a quiet window. Do not begin while a patrol is crossing, nearby combat is escalating, or another loud interaction is already drawing attention toward you.
- Open from a position that preserves movement. Avoid standing squarely in the predictable center of the doorway. Keep room to step back or move through an alternate exit.
- Enter only as far as necessary. Maintain awareness of the entrance and the route you will use to leave. Do not let the first container pull you into a blind corner.
- Search the most valuable container first. Every search takes several seconds and makes substantial noise. Secure the item most likely to justify the key before opening lower-priority containers.
- Recheck the room and exterior after each search. Sound may have changed the threat picture. Listen, scan the doorway, and verify that the escape lane is still open.
- Stop when the risk changes. If ARC movement, footsteps, combat, or a blocked extraction route appears, take the loot you already secured and leave. A locked room is not a requirement to clear every container.
Why container order matters
Searching everything is a common way to turn a successful entry into an avoidable elimination. The first search already announces that someone is inside or at the room. Additional searches extend the period in which a rival or patrol can converge. Rank containers before you begin, take the best return first, and treat the remaining containers as optional.
Control the doorway and the escape lane
The doorway is both a trap and an information source. It is predictable, often visible from outside, and easy for an arriving Raider to watch. At the same time, it is your quickest route out if you keep it usable.

- Stand offset from the threshold instead of presenting a fixed silhouette in the center.
- Keep the chosen exit clear; do not pile your movement against a wall or dead-end corner.
- Use the room’s interior only long enough to interact with the highest-priority containers.
- After the key interaction, move away from the immediate doorway rather than lingering to observe what happens.
- When leaving, take the route you already checked. Do not improvise a new exposed crossing because the original route feels inconvenient.
These are practical consequences of the game’s noise and contested-extraction mechanics: the longer you remain at a known location, the more time others have to arrive and the more loud actions you create for them to follow.
Plan the final extraction
| Extraction option | Requirement | Noise and risk | Planning use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular extraction controls | No special hatch key is stated as necessary. | Produces a loud, blaring noise that can attract Raiders and ARC. | Use only after checking approaches; leave immediately when the interaction completes. |
| Raider Hatch | Requires a Raider Hatch Key. | Quieter to use than regular extraction controls. | Prefer when available and already identified, but do not assume one exists on the route. |
Do not begin a loud extraction simply because you reached the marker. Listen and scan again. If another fight has started nearby, a patrol has changed direction, or players are rotating toward the area, delay briefly or use the fallback route you identified earlier. The goal is not to eliminate every possible threat; it is to avoid adding your own predictable noise to a bad moment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Close Scrutiny changes the normal key-room rule
Close Scrutiny is a map-condition exception. Under normal conditions, key-locked rooms are accessible because their doors are open or removed, while puzzle-locked rooms remain inaccessible. During Close Scrutiny, the room’s apparent accessibility does not mean the approach is safe.
The first Assessor pylon breach
The first pylon breach emits noise and spawns an aggravated ARC swarm. That event creates a forced-attention problem even if no Raider was waiting nearby. Plan the breach as part of the room operation rather than treating it as a harmless preliminary interaction.

How to breach without being trapped
- Choose the withdrawal direction first. Identify the cover or exit you will use after the breach.
- Deploy Li’l Smoke Grenade or Smoke Grenade before breaching. The smoke is intended to obscure the movement that follows the noisy interaction.
- Breach once and move. Do not remain at the pylon to watch the swarm develop.
- Use the planned escape lane. If you have a Photoelectric Cloak, it can support a cleaner withdrawal when the ARC response is unavoidable.
- After looting, throw a Lure Grenade opposite your escape route. The lure is a diversion for the departure, not a reason to stay and search every container.
Close Scrutiny removes the assumption that an open door equals a quiet room. Treat the first pylon interaction as the loudest, most predictable moment of the run and reserve your movement tools for the exit that follows it.
Best Value
Locked Gate: a special high-traffic case
Locked Gate requires four codes inserted into terminals. The area is popular during raids, so the player-threat calculation is different from a secluded key room. Its underground tunnels offer above-average loot and better blueprint odds, but those rewards also make the location more attractive to rival Raiders.
Use a staged plan for the four codes
- Keep all codes protected and know which terminal interaction comes next before exposing yourself.
- Scout the route between terminals rather than assuming the first safe position remains safe.
- Expect traffic around the event and avoid spending unnecessary time in a terminal area after each insertion.
- Once the gate is open, prioritize the highest-value underground containers and preserve a direct route back out.
The value of Locked Gate can justify greater preparation, not careless persistence. Above-average loot and better blueprint odds do not remove the noise, extraction, or rival-player risks that apply to every other locked-room run.
When attention is already on you
If you hear a patrol, movement, or a fight closing on the room, switch from looting mode to withdrawal mode. Take the highest-value item you already secured, choose the clearest exit, and use the tool that matches the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse smoke to cross a watched space
Smoke is most useful before a forced breach or when the route from the interaction point to cover is visible. Place it to obscure the movement you must make, then move decisively. Staying inside the smoke to continue searching defeats its purpose.
Use a lure to redirect pursuit
After the loot is secured, throw a Lure Grenade opposite the route you will actually take. The diversion should pull attention away from your departure. Do not throw it and then remain near the room waiting to see whether it worked.
Use Photoelectric Cloak for the clean withdrawal
Photoelectric Cloak is the documented option for a cleaner exit when an ARC response cannot be avoided. Activate it for the movement that matters—getting away from the room, crossing the exposed lane, or reaching extraction—rather than spending its protection while stationary.
Common failure modes and fixes
| What went wrong | Why it happens | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The key was lost after elimination. | It remained in ordinary carried storage. | Move every key into a Safe Pocket immediately after acquisition. |
| A patrol arrived during the search. | The search began without checking the patrol cycle. | Wait for a quiet window and recheck audio and sightlines before each container. |
| A Raider appeared at the doorway. | The player lingered in a predictable threshold after making noise. | Stand offset, keep an alternate exit open, and leave as soon as the priority loot is secured. |
| The extraction became a firefight. | The loud regular controls announced the position. | Scan before activating, use a Raider Hatch when you have its key, and keep a fallback route. |
| Close Scrutiny produced an overwhelming ARC response. | The first pylon breach was treated as a normal interaction. | Smoke before breaching, move immediately afterward, and reserve a lure or Photoelectric Cloak for withdrawal. |
| The run ended with low-value containers still unopened. | Search time was spent on completion rather than value. | Rank containers, take the best return first, and abandon the rest when the threat picture changes. |
A compact locked-room checklist
- Key in Safe Pocket?
- Nearest extraction and fallback route identified?
- Regular extraction noise versus Raider Hatch availability understood?
- All entrances, exits, sightlines, and ARC patrols checked?
- Quiet window confirmed?
- Highest-value container chosen first?
- Doorway and escape lane still usable?
- Smoke, Lure Grenade, or Photoelectric Cloak available for a forced response?
- Close Scrutiny pylon breach treated as a noise-and-swarm event?
- Ready to leave without clearing every container?
A locked-room run succeeds when the key survives, the valuable loot is secured quickly, and the extraction begins before the noise you created becomes someone else’s opportunity. Protect the key, make every loud action deliberate, and leave while the route is still yours.
