That option requests an infinite input loop; it does not configure encoding, guarantee a seamless transition, or keep a failed stream online by itself.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Install FFmpeg on a computer that can read the media files and maintain a stable upload connection. This workflow does not require a specific hardware purchase, but the computer and connection must remain available for the length of the broadcast.
- Prepare the song or sermon files you have permission to broadcast. For a playlist, make a single ordered input file or use a playlist workflow that you have tested; the command below loops one input file.
- Decide the resolution and frame rate to send, and check whether your sustained upload capacity can support the selected video and audio bitrate.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create a new stream or open a scheduled one.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the encoder setup. Prefer the RTMPS URL displayed for that stream. YouTube provides these credentials; do not publish the key or put it in a public script, screenshot, or shared command log.
- Keep Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview, stream health, and event controls after FFmpeg connects.
A stream key functions like an encoder credential. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.

Choose settings that fit your video and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options with AAC or MP3 audio. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the accepted options and bitrate table before choosing values.
Example: H.264 at 1080p30
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s encoder-settings table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate. These are platform configuration figures, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted delivery. Do not apply that row to a different resolution, frame rate, or codec; choose the matching row in YouTube’s table and leave capacity for audio and network variation.

Frame rate, keyframes, and audio
- Use a frame rate appropriate for the source video rather than forcing a higher rate without a reason.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and keep it at or below YouTube’s 4-second maximum guidance.
- Use CBR and a video codec, audio codec, and bitrate combination accepted by YouTube’s current guidance.
- Confirm your upload connection can sustain the combined stream bitrate. A connection that only reaches the target intermittently may cause dropped frames or poor stream health.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. Use the exact RTMPS ingest URL shown in Live Control Room rather than constructing one from memory. RTMP is also listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance; follow the endpoint and protocol available for your stream. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Loop a file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an infinite input loop. For file-based real-time output, -re reads input at its native rate. The options belong before the input’s -i. The command shape below is a template, not a universally tested YouTube command: you must supply the local media path, appropriate encoding options, and the exact RTMPS URL and stream key for your event.

Replace ... with FFmpeg output options matched to your selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. For a playlist of separate files, this single-file loop is not sufficient. Prepare and test a playlist input or a combined file with transitions and ordering checked before broadcast. A loop repeats the input; it does not create a polished transition or repair silent, incompatible, or damaged media.
Start, preview, and end the live stream
- In Live Control Room, create or schedule the event and confirm the stream settings. Start FFmpeg with the template completed for your file and event.
- Wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check the Live Control Room preview for both picture and sound before starting the event for viewers when the workflow requires that separate step.
- Confirm the correct watch page and channel visibility, and check playback on a phone if viewers are likely to use one. YouTube recommends testing before the event and preparing the encoder well ahead of time.
- During the broadcast, monitor Live Control Room’s stream health and the actual audio and video. Keep the encoder computer and network connected;
-stream_loop -1does not restart FFmpeg if the process or connection fails. - To finish, stop FFmpeg’s content delivery and use Live Control Room’s end controls as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Clear rights for songs, recordings, and sermons
Being Tamil-language or gospel content does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. You need the necessary rights for the live stream and any archive, including rights in the song, recording, arrangement, backing track, and sermon recording where applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Resolve that with the relevant rights owner before going live. YouTube explains how Content ID works.

YouTube does not receive the stream
- Check that FFmpeg is still running and that the input file path is correct and readable.
- Recheck the RTMPS server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. A missing character, expired/replaced key, or wrong event credential can prevent connection.
- Use the protocol and URL shown for the event; do not assume an RTMP endpoint can be converted to RTMPS by changing text in the command.
The preview appears but video or audio is wrong
- Check the preview before starting the event. Confirm the selected output streams, codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio are accepted by YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- If the video is choppy or stream health is poor, check sustained upload capacity against the chosen bitrate. Lower settings using the appropriate YouTube table row if the connection cannot support them consistently.
- If audio is silent, verify the source contains the intended audio stream and that the FFmpeg output options encode or map it correctly.
The stream stops or the song loop does not behave as expected
-stream_loop -1requests infinite repetition of the input file, but it cannot prevent a process crash, power loss, or internet interruption. Check the FFmpeg process, computer, and connection.- Inspect the source file if the loop point produces a gap, abrupt cut, or silence. The loop option repeats the input; it does not make the end and beginning seamless.
- If YouTube interrupts the broadcast after a content match, review the Live Control Room warning and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner.
