Choose the right OBS source

OBS describes VLC Video as a source that lets you create a playlist, similar to an Image Slideshow. The official setup covers local media files, not importing a YouTube playlist or rebroadcasting another channel’s stream.
Set up one Punjabi music video to repeat
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you want to use. In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if prompted, then select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, select Browse, choose the local video file, and turn on Loop.
- Select OK. Check the preview and confirm the video and its audio play as intended. When playback reaches the end, the Loop setting restarts that file.
OBS lists common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The exact supported playback behavior can depend on the system and media file. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Set up a playlist of local videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Use the version matching OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select + in the Sources box and choose VLC Video. If VLC Video is not available, check that VLC is installed and the architectures match.
- Add the local media files you have permission to stream to the playlist in the source properties.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback restarts after the list runs out. OBS documents this option as on by default; verify its state in the source properties.
- Enable shuffle only if you want the playlist order randomized, then select OK and check playback in the preview.
Use Media Source for a straightforward one-file loop. Choose VLC Video when you need multiple files, playlist looping, or shuffle. Both approaches control playback in OBS; neither provides rights to the media or ensures the broadcast will remain online.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup for the broadcast and obtain the stream key for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter or connect the stream key using the controls shown in your OBS version.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Return to your scene, confirm the video and audio are present, then select Start Streaming in OBS. Check YouTube Studio to confirm the incoming stream appears before relying on it.
OBS and YouTube Studio labels can change over time. Follow the current controls shown in your installed version, and do not treat a successful connection as confirmation that the content is cleared for use.
Clear music-video rights before streaming
Being able to loop a file is not permission to broadcast it. YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Get permission that specifically covers the intended live-stream use of the video and music, including the relevant territories and duration.
- Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says even licensed third-party content can be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted.
- For music, YouTube identifies public-domain works or music used with the copyright owner’s permission as “safe.” Its suggestions include the YouTube Audio Library, original compositions, Creator Music in certain regions, and licensed third-party music. Check the terms for the particular use; a “free” label or attribution in a description does not by itself prevent a Content ID match. See YouTube’s tips to find safe music.
- Do not assume that permission, a copyright exception, public-domain status, or a Creative Commons license guarantees avoiding a claim or strike. Check that the relevant rights and license terms cover your planned broadcast. YouTube outlines these possible bases in Copyright on YouTube.
YouTube’s live Content ID matching feature is for eligible Content Manager partners and requires global rights and exclusive ownership of the live content. YouTube says the stream cannot include third-party content such as background music. It is not a workaround for ordinary channels that want to rebroadcast commercial music videos. Plan for 24/7 operation and interruptions
The loop controls restart a file or playlist; they do not promise continuous operation. An OBS broadcast depends on the computer, OBS, the local media, the network connection, and YouTube. Plan how you will monitor the stream and recover if power, software, connectivity, or the platform interrupts it. The official OBS reference explains loop behavior but does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 service.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. For a list of videos, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video properties.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist does not restart: Reopen the VLC Video properties and verify Loop Playlist is enabled. Confirm the playlist contains the intended local files.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: Check YouTube Studio notifications and the live-copyright guidance. A rights claim may require the rights holder’s action, including adding your channel to its allowlist; changing OBS loop settings does not resolve a rights issue.
- The broadcast goes offline unexpectedly: Check the computer’s power, OBS status, internet connection, and YouTube Studio. A loop setting only controls media playback and cannot recover a failed computer or network connection.
