On Linux, the simplest way to loop one prerecorded video on YouTube Live is to add it to OBS Studio as a Media Source and enable Loop. For a sequence of videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist. In either case, OBS sends the stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to play | OBS source | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| One video repeating | Media Source | Enable Loop to restart the file when playback ends. OBS documents this source for Linux. |
| Several videos in sequence | VLC Video | Add a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
These are playback sources, not separate ways to connect to YouTube: both still need OBS’s streaming connection. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation for source behavior.
Set up a single repeating video in OBS
- Install OBS Studio. Follow the OBS download page for your Linux distribution. OBS’s Linux installation guide recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and documents an Ubuntu package route; the available package steps can vary by distribution.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to select a scene or create one for the broadcast.
- Add the video. In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source, give it a name if prompted, and select the local video file.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, check Loop, then confirm the selection. The video should restart after it reaches the end.
- Check the picture and sound. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended, and watch the audio meters while it plays. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers adding sources, audio, and output settings.
- Test playback before going live. Let the file reach its end and confirm it starts again. File extensions alone do not guarantee that a particular OBS build can decode every codec or encoding variant. Test the actual file, and check the OBS preview and audio meters for problems.
Loop a playlist of videos
- Install VLC. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match architectures: OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, choose + → VLC Video. If that option is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Build the playlist. In the source properties, add the video files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable playlist looping. Check Loop Playlist and confirm the source settings. If you want a fixed sequence, leave shuffle disabled.
- Test the transitions. Watch a full pass through the playlist if practical, checking that each file plays and its sound is correct before connecting to YouTube.
OBS describes the available source options in its Media Sources documentation. Whether a particular file plays correctly still depends on the codecs supported by your installed software.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check live-stream eligibility and timing. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube Help says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast time.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings, copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate service option, and enter the details as required by the installed OBS version.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room’s stream settings and use it with the stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS Help page says to check that the URL uses
rtmpsif troubleshooting a connection and notes that port 443 can be specified for some SSL errors. Treat the stream key as secret: someone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. - Set and review output. Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are configured in the encoder for Live Control Room streaming; YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewer delivery. There is no single suitable bitrate for every file and connection. Choose settings appropriate to the resolution, frame rate, content, and available upload capacity, then check OBS’s output settings.
- Start the encoder and monitor YouTube. In OBS, start streaming, then check the Live Control Room preview and status. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s encoder workflow says to wait for the preview and select Go live when ready.
OBS recommends reviewing output settings and running a short test before the first stream. A short test can reveal connection, framing, or audio problems, but it does not establish long-term reliability. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior does not remove the need to check your stream and account settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rights and long-running stream checks
- Confirm you have the rights to everything in the video. The fact that a file is prerecorded or already online does not grant permission to rebroadcast its footage or music. These setup steps do not establish that your content is eligible under copyright rules or YouTube policies.
- Review the stream while it runs. A loop can repeat indefinitely, but the broadcast still depends on the Linux host, network connection, OBS, and media file. The setup instructions do not guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
- Keep the source files accessible. A local file must remain available to OBS during playback. Avoid moving or removing it while the source is in use.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops at the end | The source’s loop option is off. | Open Media Source properties and enable Loop, or enable Loop Playlist for VLC Video. |
| VLC Video is not available in Sources | VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and, for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC; then reopen OBS if needed. |
| The source appears but the file will not play correctly | The installed build may not decode that file’s codecs or encoding variant. | Test the specific file in OBS and inspect its preview and audio meters. Do not assume a supported file extension guarantees decoding. |
| OBS connects, but the scheduled YouTube stream is not public | The encoder preview may be ready, but the scheduled stream still needs the operator’s go-live action. | Check Live Control Room and select Go live after the preview appears. |
| Connection or SSL error | The stream URL or transport configuration may be wrong. | Check the URL in Live Control Room, use the RTMPS URL if supported, and follow YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance about the rtmps prefix and port 443 for some SSL errors. |
| Video is visible but there is no sound | The source or OBS audio configuration may not be sending audio. | Play the source and check OBS audio meters and output settings before the live broadcast. |
| First-time live streaming is not available yet | YouTube may still be enabling live access for the account. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement, as stated in YouTube Help, and complete setup before the intended broadcast. |
