YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats ordinary playlist playback; it does not, by itself, create or repeat a live broadcast. To show prerecorded clips continuously on YouTube Live, send a feed through a live encoder or other production workflow, then configure the horizontal and vertical layouts in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube documents those layout options, but its help pages do not establish automatic rotation of separate landscape and portrait files from one playlist.
First, decide whether you mean playlist playback or a live broadcast
A regular YouTube playlist and a YouTube Live stream are different workflows. For ordinary playback, play the playlist and select Loop in its playlist controls; YouTube describes this as repeating the playlist for viewers (YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists). That feature is not a way to create a live broadcast.

A live stream instead sends a video feed to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that sends that feed, with the encoder converting video into a digital format for streaming (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). If your goal is to broadcast prerecorded material repeatedly, you need a production workflow that supplies the clips to the live stream; turning on playlist Loop on a watch page is not enough.

What YouTube supports for landscape and portrait Live
YouTube says streams started from Live Control Room go live in both horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats by default. The vertical output initially uses a center crop. You can configure its layout in Live Control Room with the documented choices below (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

These are live-output layout choices, not a documented way to alternate automatically between separately uploaded landscape and portrait files. YouTube’s help pages do not specify that a single Live playlist can switch orientations clip by clip. Check the current Live Control Room preview for how a chosen layout frames your particular content.
Set up a live workflow for prerecorded clips
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If Live is being enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until just before the planned broadcast (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

2. Choose an encoder or production workflow
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder as broad ways to stream. Encoders support more advanced production, but YouTube does not require a dedicated hardware encoder for this task. For prerecorded clips, choose software or a production setup that can send a continuous feed to YouTube and consult that product’s current documentation for playlist sequencing and repeat behavior. YouTube’s help does not verify which third-party products automatically rotate landscape and portrait files, or what settings that would require.

3. Create the live stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Set up the stream in Live Control Room and use the stream key and connection details shown there in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- Configure your encoder’s prerecorded sequence using its own current instructions. If the clips have different orientations, decide whether the production should crop, fit, or otherwise arrange them before they reach YouTube; do not assume the YouTube playlist Loop control will manage them.
4. Configure and preview both live layouts
In Live Control Room, inspect the horizontal and vertical previews. Choose the vertical layout that best preserves the important content: center crop can cut off the left and right sides of landscape footage; fit to phone width changes how the source fits the vertical layout; stacked arranges content vertically. Verify titles, faces, subtitles, and other key details in both previews before going live. YouTube documents these choices but does not describe automatic orientation changes based on each uploaded file.

5. Test, then monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends testing before the public stream, matching the test’s audio and movement to the real broadcast, and monitoring stream health and messages. Match stream quality to available upload bandwidth and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds (YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream).
- Check that the encoder is connected and the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room before starting.
- Use the actual clips, audio, and expected movement during the test; a static or silent test may not reveal the same issues.
- Watch stream health and Control Room messages during the broadcast, and check both layout previews when the stream content changes.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist repeats on a watch page, but there is no live stream. Playlist Loop repeats ordinary playback. Start a separate Live Control Room and encoder workflow to send a live feed.
- The vertical output cuts off important content. The default center crop removes the sides of horizontal footage. Preview fit-to-phone-width or stacked layout and choose the framing that keeps essential details visible.
- The channel cannot start a live stream. Confirm channel verification and check for live-streaming restrictions within the prior 90 days. First-time Live activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The stream is unstable or health warnings appear. Check the upload connection and encoder output, lower the stream quality if it exceeds available upload bandwidth, leave bandwidth headroom, and monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Landscape and portrait clips do not alternate as expected. YouTube’s documented layout controls do not establish automatic rotation of separately uploaded files. Check the encoder or production software’s current documentation for its sequence and orientation behavior; this capability is not confirmed by YouTube’s cited setup help.
