You can loop a sermon recording into a YouTube Live broadcast by having FFmpeg read the file repeatedly and send an encoded stream to YouTube’s live ingest server. The basic pattern is a media input, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeat option, and a YouTube stream key used with an RTMPS destination. Test the exact file, output settings, Pi 5, and church internet connection before relying on it for a service: published Pi 5 encoding information does not prove that a particular setup can sustain a specific resolution or run continuously.

What this setup does—and what it does not do

In this workflow, FFmpeg reads a video file stored on the Raspberry Pi 5, repeats that input, encodes or passes through the media as configured, and sends a live feed to YouTube. Viewers receive a live broadcast, not a replay of an earlier YouTube broadcast. The source recording needs to be available to the Pi, and the Pi and its network connection must remain operational while FFmpeg is streaming.

YouTube Live requires an encoder output to be sent to its ingest service. Google documents the supported ingestion protocols and recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison and RTMPS delivery guidance.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and stream key

  1. Schedule or create a live stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the intended visibility and event details for the church broadcast.
  2. Open the stream’s encoder settings in YouTube Studio. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script, or share screenshots that expose it.
  3. Use the RTMPS server address where YouTube provides one. Use the current server and key shown by YouTube rather than assuming an old forum command still matches your event’s settings.
  4. Keep the stream private or unlisted during setup testing if appropriate. Confirm the intended audience and event visibility before starting the public service.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations are documented at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Check that page when setting up, because the live requirements and interface can change.

Choose a conservative output configuration

Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the sermon recording and that the Pi can encode reliably while sending data over the church’s actual internet connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not a guarantee that your upload connection or Pi can sustain them.

Output choice YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation What to verify
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps Confirm the Pi sustains the selected encode and that the upload connection has dependable headroom above the stream bitrate.
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps Confirm stable video, clear speech, and upload headroom at the church’s actual streaming location.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Set the interval in the encoder configuration you use, and keep the video bitrate constant. For other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, use YouTube’s current settings table rather than extrapolating these two H.264 examples.

Build and test the FFmpeg loop

The loop option commonly used for repeating an input is -stream_loop -1. A community FFmpeg discussion illustrates that option in a YouTube Live workflow, but it is an example rather than authoritative documentation. Consult the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your Raspberry Pi and test with your actual recording. See FFmpeg documentation and the community example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the installed build and input file. Confirm that FFmpeg is installed and can read the recording and its audio. A command that works for one container or codec may not work unchanged for another.
  2. Start with the looped input pattern. Place -stream_loop -1 before the input option so FFmpeg repeats that input indefinitely. The general structure is ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/sermon.mp4 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY". Replace the bracketed section with the tested encoding options and replace the destination with the RTMPS server URL and stream key provided for your YouTube event. This is a pattern, not a complete universal command: the correct codec, bitrate, dimensions, frame rate, audio handling, and RTMPS URL depend on the source and YouTube’s current settings.
  3. Configure the output to match YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Use a supported video and audio codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and the bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate. FFmpeg options must be placed in the correct order for the installed version and stream configuration.
  4. Run a representative rehearsal. Start a test event and let the recording pass through its end and loop point. Check whether the transition is acceptable, speech remains continuous, and the output stays stable.
  5. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, as YouTube advises. Check for ingest warnings, dropped frames, or audio/video problems rather than relying only on FFmpeg appearing to run.
  6. Rehearse for the intended duration. A short test can catch setup errors, but it does not demonstrate all-day or multiday reliability. Before relying on the arrangement for a service, test it for a representative full duration under the same operating conditions.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Raspberry Pi’s paper, H.264 encoding performance on Raspberry Pi 5-series computers, discusses software libx264 encoding and example performance. It describes an encoding path; it does not establish that a particular Pi 5, cooling arrangement, resolution, frame rate, recording, or installation will sustain this church’s live stream or run uninterrupted for days. Treat successful testing on your own media and hardware as the deciding evidence.

Troubleshoot the problems that matter during a service

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the server URL and key came from the intended YouTube event, that the key was not mistyped, and that the destination uses the RTMPS details shown in Studio. Check FFmpeg’s output for connection or input errors.
  • The stream reaches YouTube but reports poor health: Verify the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder guidance. Check the connection at the actual church location and reduce the output demand if the available upload is not dependable.
  • Video stutters or FFmpeg cannot sustain the encode: Check whether the selected software encode is too demanding for the actual Pi and media. Test a lower output resolution or frame rate, then repeat a representative-duration rehearsal; the available Pi 5 paper is not a guarantee for your workload.
  • Audio is missing, clipped, or interrupted at the loop point: Confirm that FFmpeg reads the recording’s audio stream and that the output uses a supported audio codec. Listen through a full loop in the test broadcast and inspect YouTube’s stream messages.
  • The broadcast stops when the recording ends: Confirm the repeat option is attached to the input in the correct position and that the intended media file is the input being looped. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation and test the loop boundary before going live.
  • The setup works briefly but fails during a longer event: A short successful run does not establish all-day reliability. Run a rehearsal closer to the intended duration and watch YouTube Studio’s health indicators and messages throughout.
