How to Loop a Podcast Playlist on YouTube Live with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a prerecorded podcast on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i option, read local media at playback speed with -re, and send the encoded output to YouTube over RTMPS. For multiple episodes, first prepare them as a compatible playlist or combined input; a single loop option cannot make unrelated files concatenate safely by itself.

What you need before starting

  • FFmpeg installed with an encoding setup suitable for your media and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
  • A prepared podcast file, or a playlist/combined input whose episode order and transitions you have checked.
  • A YouTube channel and a stream configured in YouTube Studio, with its ingest URL and stream key.
  • Rights and permissions that cover rebroadcasting all audio and other content in the stream on YouTube.

The command below is a schematic template, not a tested, copy-and-run command. Video presentation, audio mapping, codec, bitrate, and output options depend on the source files and the capabilities of your FFmpeg build.

Prepare and check the podcast playlist

Loop one episode or one prepared file

If the entire desired program is already in one media file, use that file as the input. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 tells it to repeat the input indefinitely.

Use multiple episodes in a deliberate order

For several episodes, arrange the intended sequence as a playlist or compatible combined input before applying the loop. Check episode order, audio levels, and the transition from the final item back to the first. Do not assume arbitrary files can be joined with stream copy: differences in codecs, stream layout, or other media properties may require re-encoding or a different concat method. FFmpeg documents its input and looping options at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the stream’s ingest URL and stream key into your local encoder configuration.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in an article, shared script, screenshot, or public log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
  4. Use RTMPS for this workflow. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. See its encoder setup guidance and stream settings.

Build the FFmpeg command

For a single local file, the basic shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "episode.mp4" "RTMPS_INGEST_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the bracketed options with settings that match your actual input and YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Replace the final placeholder with the ingest URL and stream key in the format expected by your YouTube stream. Do not paste a real key into a publicly visible command.

Why the option order matters

  • -re makes FFmpeg read a local input at its media rate instead of consuming the file as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 requests endless input looping. Both are input options and belong before -i.
  • -i "episode.mp4" identifies the input. For a playlist or combined input, use the appropriate input in place of the single file.
  • The output options and RTMPS destination must match the media streams, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream configuration. The schematic deliberately does not prescribe one universal codec or mapping.

Choose output settings that YouTube accepts

YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate using YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure your sustained upload capacity can support it. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or source file can encode every listed format. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings for current values and requirements.

YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers. The feed you encode is therefore not necessarily the only playback format viewers receive.

RTMPS is the straightforward default; HLS is a different path

For a straightforward FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup, RTMPS is the simpler default supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance. HLS ingestion is a separate protocol: it uses segmented media and rolling playlists, requires additional setup, and has higher latency than RTMP according to YouTube. Use HLS only when your workflow specifically calls for it and you have implemented its playlist and segment requirements. See YouTube’s protocol guidance and HLS ingestion requirements.

Test the feed before making it public

  1. Start FFmpeg and check that the stream preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  2. Listen for clear audio and confirm the video presentation is intentional, even if the podcast is primarily audio.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and fix warnings before relying on the broadcast.
  4. Listen through representative transitions between episodes, including the loop from the last episode back to the first.
  5. Test the complete sequence before promoting or scheduling the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; see its live encoder tips.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on an indefinitely running broadcast being saved as one complete video. If an archive matters, plan intentional stop-and-restart sessions that stay under 12 hours, and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. The 12-hour guidance is a YouTube platform rule; the Help page checked for this article does not state a publication date.

Check rights before looping content

Public availability of a podcast does not automatically grant permission to rebroadcast it. Confirm that your agreements cover continuous or repeated live transmission on YouTube, including music, clips, guest contributions, and other third-party material in the episodes. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. For licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist or the stream can still be interrupted. Your own contract and the relevant rights holders determine what you may rebroadcast. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot common failures

The file plays too quickly or FFmpeg finishes reading it immediately

For a local file, check that -re appears before -i. It makes FFmpeg read at media rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The input does not repeat

Check that -stream_loop -1 is before the relevant -i. If you are using a playlist or combined input, confirm that the input itself represents the full sequence you want repeated.

YouTube does not receive a signal

Confirm you selected the right stream in YouTube Studio and that the configured RTMPS destination and key belong to it. Check the FFmpeg output for connection or encoding errors, and avoid revealing the key while sharing logs.

The feed is rejected or stream health reports a problem

Review the chosen video and audio codecs, constant bitrate configuration, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings for your resolution and codec. Also confirm your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

Episodes fail at a transition or the audio drops out

Check the playlist order and compare the media stream properties across episodes. Incompatible inputs may need re-encoding or a different concat approach; stream copy is not a universal fix.

The broadcast is interrupted after a copyright match

Stop and review the matched material and your permissions. If you have a license, confirm with the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone does not establish that the stream will avoid interruption.
