How to Loop a Gurbani Playlist on YouTube Live with FFmpeg on Linux

Use FFmpeg’s input loop option to repeat a local file on YouTube Live, with steps for RTMPS setup, encoder settings, playlist caveats, and monitoring.

On Linux, FFmpeg can loop a local media file indefinitely and send it to a YouTube Live event. For a single-file loop, put -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i option, then send the encoded output to the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A multi-file Gurbani playlist needs a separate, media-specific workflow; the single-file command below does not automatically play a folder or playlist.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says channels must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • FFmpeg installed on your Linux system, plus a local media file that FFmpeg can read.
  • A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the output bitrate you choose.
  • Permission to rebroadcast every recording and any accompanying visuals. Devotional subject matter, public availability, or an existing YouTube upload does not itself grant rebroadcast rights.

This workflow is for prerecorded media sent as a live encoder feed; it does not broadcast from a camera. Test with your own files and FFmpeg build before relying on a long-running stream.

Get the YouTube event URL and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live event or select an existing one.
  2. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains these settings in Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose and reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; it describes it as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Treat the stream key as a password. Do not post it in a public script, screenshot, or terminal recording. Avoid leaving it in shell history or logs where practical; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

Loop one file with FFmpeg

For a single compatible video file, this command is an illustrative starting point, not a tested universal recipe:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "track-or-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace track-or-video.mp4 with your file, and replace the destination with the RTMPS URL and stream key supplied for your event. Keep the credential private. FFmpeg documents that “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop”; -stream_loop is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. See the FFmpeg documentation.

The example requests real-time input pacing with -re, H.264 video, AAC audio, 30 fps, and a 60-frame GOP at that frame rate. Those example frame and GOP values are not suitable for every source or network. If your file has no video stream, or its streams cannot be decoded as expected, adapt the command to the actual media rather than assuming this video-and-audio example applies unchanged.

Choose output settings for the source and connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and select settings your source and upload connection can sustain. The sample’s 128 kbps audio value is an example, not a universal YouTube requirement.

Handle a playlist of separate files

The command above repeats one input; it does not advance through multiple files. A multi-file workflow must define how files are sequenced and repeated, whether their codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, and time bases are compatible, and how transitions and timestamps behave at file boundaries.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Do not assume that putting -stream_loop -1 before one input loops every item in a playlist.
  • Use a playlist or concatenation method appropriate to your FFmpeg version and media. Verify the syntax and behavior for the chosen workflow rather than copying a single-file loop command as if it covered multiple inputs.
  • Test transitions locally and inspect FFmpeg output for timestamp, decoding, or stream errors. Check whether the YouTube preview has gaps or unexpected audio/video changes.
  • Confirm rebroadcast permission for every recording and every image or video shown between tracks.

Where input streams differ, you may need to normalize them to common output settings or use a workflow that handles the differences deliberately. A successful first file does not prove that every later item or transition will work.

Start the stream and verify it

  1. Start the FFmpeg command and watch its terminal output for connection, encoding, or input errors.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed and review the preview before starting the event for viewers.
  3. Check stream health and listen to or watch the preview for audio level, synchronization, black frames, missing audio, and transition problems.
  4. Keep monitoring the encoder and Live Control Room while the broadcast runs; an accepted connection at startup does not guarantee that the local process, network, or media will remain healthy.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive threshold is not a promise of unlimited event duration or uninterrupted FFmpeg operation. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no signal Incorrect destination, stream key, event selection, or connection. Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from the selected event’s stream settings; confirm FFmpeg output shows a successful connection and YouTube preview receives the feed.
Stream key or authentication failure The key may be wrong, stale, or reset. Use the key belonging to the active event. If the credential was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the command securely.
FFmpeg exits or reports decode errors The input may be unsupported, damaged, or have streams unlike those assumed by the example. Confirm FFmpeg can read the file and inspect its actual audio/video streams; adapt codecs, mapping, or output settings to that file.
Image, sound, or motion is wrong Output settings may not match the source, or the source may lack an expected stream. Review the input’s dimensions, frame rate, codecs, and audio; compare output settings with YouTube’s current guidance and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
Breaks or errors occur between playlist items Files may have incompatible stream parameters or the playlist workflow may handle transitions and timestamps poorly. Test each file and the actual transition sequence locally, then review the live preview and FFmpeg logs. Do not assume single-file looping resolves multi-file boundaries.
Stream drops after starting The local process, host, or upload connection may have stopped or become unstable. Check FFmpeg output, Linux host and network status, and YouTube stream health; restart only after correcting the underlying issue.

Or let it run in the cloud
