To loop a 10-hour sleep meditation video in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in the source properties. Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, check the preview, then start the live event. Test the complete setup beforehand: the settings enable repeat playback, but they cannot guarantee that a computer, OBS, or internet connection will run uninterrupted for ten hours.
Before you start
- Have the video file saved locally and accessible to the computer running OBS. OBS documents formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Its guide does not specify a maximum duration or file size, so test your actual ten-hour file rather than assuming every file will perform the same way. OBS: Media Sources
- Have access to YouTube Studio so you can create or select an encoder stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key.
- Check that your internet connection has enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate. YouTube: Streaming tips
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance also requires compliance with its Community Guidelines. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
Loop one video with OBS Media Source
- Add the file: In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream. In the Sources dock, choose + > Media Source, give it a name if prompted, and select the local video file in the source properties.
- Enable repeat playback: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS describes this as replaying the file when playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate setting: it controls whether playback starts again when the source is in the current scene and visible. It does not replace Loop. OBS: Media Sources
- Check the scene composition: Confirm the video is visible in the OBS preview and fits the canvas. Use the source’s transform options to fit, stretch, center, or crop it as needed; preserve the footage’s aspect ratio when you do not want to distort the image.
- Check the sound: Play the source and watch the OBS audio meters. Confirm the meditation audio is audible and not unintentionally muted or clipped before you start sending the stream.
Media Source or VLC Video?
For one video, Media Source is the simpler choice: it is built into the OBS workflow and does not require installing VLC. VLC Video is useful when you need a playlist rather than a single file.

| Choice | Best for | Repeat control | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video | Loop repeats the file at the end | No separate VLC installation |
| VLC Video | A list of media files | Loop Playlist starts the list again after it runs out | VLC must be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC |
OBS documents the VLC Video source and its playlist controls alongside its media-source guidance. OBS: Media Sources
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Get the encoder details: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter them in OBS: Open OBS streaming settings, choose YouTube as the service if it is available in the service list, and enter the server URL and stream key in their corresponding fields. YouTube describes the stream key as the stream’s password and address; do not share it. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Send a test preview: Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview, then check that both picture and sound are correct before starting the event. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview before going live. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Start and monitor: Start the live event in YouTube when the selected Live Control Room flow calls for it. Keep an eye on the live output, including audio and video quality, rather than assuming that a successful preview guarantees a trouble-free overnight run.
Prepare for a long stream
Test the real file and setup
Run the actual video through OBS before the scheduled stream. Check that it reaches the end and begins again, that audio continues as expected, and that the scene remains composed correctly. The official OBS and YouTube guidance describes configuration and preflight practices, not guaranteed playback for every ten-hour file, computer, or network.

Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. Treat that as a recommendation, not a guarantee: competing network use or changes in connection quality can still affect a live stream. YouTube: Streaming tips
Know the archive guidance
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A ten-hour stream is below that stated duration, but the archive guidance does not guarantee that the stream itself will stay connected for its full duration. Platform guidance can change, so check YouTube’s current encoder instructions when planning a broadcast. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Fix common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops at the end | Media Source properties | Turn on Loop. Do not confuse it with Restart playback when source becomes active. |
| VLC Video is unavailable | VLC installation and architecture | Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC according to OBS. |
| The video is cropped, stretched, or poorly placed | Source size and scene layout | Adjust the source transform to fit, center, stretch, or crop. Preserve the aspect ratio if you want to avoid distorting the video. |
| YouTube preview does not appear or is unstable | OBS encoder status, stream URL and key, and available upload bandwidth | Confirm you copied the details for the selected YouTube stream, check that OBS is sending, and allow YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom above total bitrate. |
| Picture or sound fails during the long run | The source file, OBS output, and live connection | Test the actual file and monitor the live output. The documented settings do not ensure uninterrupted operation on a particular computer or connection. |
