To put an extra lock on a messaging app on a supported Samsung Galaxy, use Secure Folder: set up the folder, add the messaging app inside it, then lock the folder. This protects the app instance inside Secure Folder; it does not necessarily move your existing conversations or make the regular copy of the app private. If you only want to hide message previews, that is a different setting.
What “lock text messages” can mean
Samsung’s documented method adds a separate access step to a messaging app inside Secure Folder. It is an app-level barrier, not a lock applied to selected individual conversations. Because Secure Folder creates a separate app copy, check that the copy has the conversations and notifications you need before relying on it.

To hide message content on the lock screen instead, look for notification-preview controls on your phone or in your messaging app. Their exact labels and behavior vary, and the Samsung guidance cited here does not provide a complete path for every Galaxy model and app.

Set up Secure Folder and add your messaging app
- Find Secure Folder. Open Settings and search for “Secure Folder” if needed. Samsung’s listed route for Android 14 and later is Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder. Menu paths can differ on older Android releases. Samsung’s Secure Folder setup guide describes setup and supported lock methods.
- Complete setup and choose a lock. Follow the on-screen steps and select a PIN, password, or pattern. Fingerprint access may be available, depending on your device and software.
- Add the messaging app. Open Secure Folder and add the messaging app you use, or install it from the app store available inside the folder. Samsung explains that adding an installed app makes a copy; apps inside the folder can operate independently. Samsung’s explanation of Secure Folder apps covers this separate-app behavior.
- Set when the folder locks. In Secure Folder’s settings, open Auto lock Secure Folder and choose an available option. Samsung’s US instructions for Android 16 with One UI 8 say the “Each time I leave an app” choice was removed, “When screen turns off” is the default, and Lock and exit can be selected manually from the menu. Other versions may show different choices. See Samsung’s Secure Folder locking guidance.
- Keep account recovery available. If setup offers a Samsung-account reset option, consider enabling it and make sure you can access that account. Samsung warns that without reset enabled, forgetting the folder credential may require removing and setting up Secure Folder again. Samsung’s Secure Folder guidance explains the recovery limitation.
Check which messages and notifications the protected app receives
Do not assume that adding an app copy transfers its history, protects the regular app, or automatically routes all incoming texts to Secure Folder. Samsung’s setup material establishes that the folder can contain app copies, but does not settle message-history, SMS default-app, RCS-account, or notification behavior for every app, model, and carrier configuration.

- Open the app inside Secure Folder and confirm whether the conversations you need are present.
- Check which messaging app is set as the phone’s default, and verify which app receives new messages.
- Test notifications with Secure Folder locked. Samsung says apps and notifications in the folder pause until it is decrypted, so an app in the folder may not notify you while it remains locked.
If Secure Folder is missing or your messages are not there
Secure Folder is not available on every Galaxy model. Samsung notes that its entry may be absent from Security and privacy when a device does not support the feature. Search Settings first; if it is still missing, check the support page for your exact model and region rather than assuming the feature is hidden under another universal path. Samsung’s US guidance describes device-dependent availability.
If the app inside Secure Folder does not show the history or receive texts you expect, treat that as a configuration issue to verify—not proof that the regular app has been moved or secured. Confirm the active app, default messaging role, account setup, and notification behavior on your specific phone.

Samsung Messages availability in the US
Samsung’s current US announcement recommends Google Messages as the default and says affected devices can no longer download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store after July 2026. Samsung describes devices running Android 11 or lower as unaffected by that end-of-service notice. This timing is specific to the US announcement and should not be generalized to other countries. See Samsung’s US messaging announcement and support information. Whichever app you use, add that specific app inside Secure Folder and verify that it handles your messages as needed.
