Google Family Link can help you manage a child’s supervised Google Account and compatible Android device: approve or block many apps, set screen-time rules, schedule Downtime or School time, apply some Chrome browsing controls, and check a supported device’s location. It does not lock down every part of a phone, and “99%” is not a measured result. Google documents no statistic showing that Family Link controls a particular percentage of a device.
What Family Link can and cannot control
Family Link is most useful as a set of practical boundaries, not as a way to take over or watch a child’s phone remotely. Available controls depend on the device, operating-system version, and feature.
- Apps and time: Approve or block many apps, set daily device limits, set app-specific limits where supported, and schedule Downtime or School time. You can add bonus time without changing the regular schedule. See Google’s Family Link overview, schedule instructions, and app-limit instructions.
- Chrome browsing: Choose whether Chrome allows all sites, tries to block explicit sites, or allows only approved sites. These settings are not a guarantee and do not necessarily cover other browsers or Chrome profiles. Google cautions, “No filter is perfect, but this should help hide sexually explicit sites.” Read Google’s Chrome and Family Link guidance.
- Location: Location can be available for supported Android devices and compatible Fitbit devices when set up. Chromebook location reporting is unavailable, according to Google’s device compatibility information.
- What parents cannot see: Google says, “Parents can’t remotely listen to their child’s phone calls” and “Parents can’t remotely see what’s on their child’s screen.” Location sharing is a separate feature, not a view of the child’s activity. See Google’s account-supervision information.
Some essential apps are outside ordinary restrictions: system apps cannot receive app time limits, and some apps cannot be blocked because they are needed for supervision or device operation. Depending on the settings and support, apps marked as unlimited can also remain available after the daily limit.
Check whether your child’s device is supported
Google’s compatibility guidance lists supervised Android devices running Android 5.0 or later and Chromebooks running Chrome OS 71 or later. Its setup instructions specify Android 6.0 or later for setting up a child’s device, while app limits and schedules have higher requirements: Android 7 or later and Chrome OS 83 or later. The different thresholds apply to different functions, so check Google’s current instructions for the exact device and control you plan to use.

Parents also need a Google Account and must meet Google’s age and country requirements. Family Link’s Android-device supervision is not equivalent to a child simply signing into Google apps on an iPhone or iPad. Google says most supervision tools do not work on those Apple devices; its iOS guidance says screen-time limits, device location, app activity, app blocking and permissions, and Chrome website restrictions are unavailable there.
Set up useful rules without blocking what your child needs
- Confirm the account and device. Check that the child has a Google Account and that the device meets the version requirements for the controls you want. Review Google’s supported-device list and setup guidance.
- Open Family Link on the parent’s device. Select the child’s profile and review the available Controls and Screen time areas. Google says the Family Link app is needed for remote management of apps and screen time.
- Choose a small set of clear time rules. Set a daily limit and, if appropriate, app-specific limits plus a Downtime or School time schedule. Decide which communication, accessibility, or school apps should remain available. System apps and unlimited-time apps may behave differently from ordinary limited apps.
- Set the Chrome policy. Choose the browsing option that fits your family, then add sites to the approved or blocked list if needed. Treat the explicit-site option as a filter that may help, not a guarantee.
- Review the result together. Check the rules on the child’s actual device and adjust them if an important app or routine is disrupted. A clear explanation of exceptions can make the limits easier to follow.
Understand the boundaries before relying on a setting
Chrome controls are not whole-device web filtering
Family Link’s website restrictions described by Google apply to Chrome. On certain computers and iOS devices, a child may be able to sign out of Chrome, switch profiles, or use another browser where those Chrome settings do not apply. Do not assume a Chrome rule covers every route to the web.

App limits and blocks have exceptions
App time-limit availability depends on the operating system, and system apps cannot have app time limits. Some apps cannot be blocked because the device needs them to function or to maintain supervision. Review the child’s available app list rather than assuming every installed app can be restricted in the same way.
Purchase approval is limited to Google Play billing
Family Link purchase approval applies to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. It should not be treated as approval for every purchase made in another app store, website, or payment system.

Apple devices do not get Android-equivalent supervision
A child can sign in to Google apps on an iPhone or iPad, but that does not provide the Android device controls described above. In particular, Google lists screen-time limits, device location, app activity, app blocking and permissions, and Chrome website restrictions as unavailable for a child using Google apps on iOS.

Google’s documentation describes specific controls and their limitations; it does not measure what share of a phone Family Link can lock down. The practical goal is to decide which apps, times, and browsing settings matter to your household, then confirm how those controls work on the supported device.
