Review both in every service you use. Instagram and TikTok provide the clearest examples, but labels and availability vary by age, account type, country and app version, so confirm the current wording in each platform’s official help centre.
Separate what you see from who can reach you
A private account does not automatically remove unwanted recommendations, and hiding a recommendation does not stop strangers from sending messages. Treat the problem as three related jobs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Job | What it changes | Typical controls |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation shaping | The posts, videos and accounts suggested in a feed or discovery area | Not interested, content or sensitive-content settings, topic controls, reset options, mute and unfollow |
| Message access | Who may start a chat or place a request in your inbox | Message-request permissions, keyword filters, limits, blocking and reporting |
| Visibility and interaction | Who can see your posts and who can comment, tag or otherwise interact | Public or private account, post audience, comment controls, follower approval, tag and timeline review |
Change the setting that matches the unwanted behaviour. If a video is offensive but no one is contacting you, start with recommendation and sensitive-content controls. If an unknown account is contacting you, change message permissions and use block or report tools. If you are worried about people seeing your own material, change audience and account-visibility settings as well.

Diagnose the source before changing settings
First identify whether the item is a recommendation, an advertisement, a post from an account you already follow, or a message request. These surfaces can use different controls. A feed reset will not change the audience for your own posts, and a private-account switch will not necessarily alter videos selected for you. Taking a screenshot or noting the account name can also help you distinguish a recurring source from a one-off recommendation.

Reduce unwanted recommendations on Instagram
Tell Instagram what you do not want
Instagram personalizes its feed from signals such as likes, follows, comments and viewing behaviour. On an unwanted suggested post, use the Not interested control. This gives the service a negative signal and should reduce similar suggestions over time.
Use the control consistently on representative examples rather than interacting with the post to investigate it. Repeatedly opening, watching or commenting on material can become another behavioural signal, even when your intention is to complain. If the same subject appears from several accounts, mark several examples and then review broader content settings.
Review content settings
Instagram also provides content settings for adjusting the material that appears in recommendation surfaces. Use the most restrictive option that still suits you, then check whether the change applies to the particular feed or discovery surface you are using. A setting that affects sensitive material is not the same as a complete ban on every topic or account.
Recommended Free Tools
Sensitive-content filtering and recommendation shaping address different layers. The former concerns material classified as sensitive; the latter uses your activity and selected preferences to choose among ordinary recommendations. One can change without the other, so review both when you are trying to reduce exposure broadly.
Reset suggested content when your feed has drifted
If your recommendations no longer resemble your interests, use Instagram’s option to reset suggested content, where it is offered for your account. A reset clears accumulated recommendation signals; it does not make the feed permanently neutral. Your subsequent follows, likes, comments and watch time will influence the new suggestions.
After resetting, avoid immediately recreating the old pattern by watching or engaging with the material you want to avoid. Follow only accounts you genuinely want in the feed, and use mute when you need to preserve a relationship without seeing its posts.
Mute or unfollow instead of engaging
Mute accounts whose posts you do not want to see but whose relationship you want to preserve. Unfollow accounts you no longer need in your feed. Avoid opening, commenting on or repeatedly watching unwanted material, because those interactions can be interpreted as interest even when your intent is to investigate or complain.

These controls reshape exposure rather than guarantee that every unwanted post disappears. Recommendations are generated continuously from new activity, and similar material can still appear through another account or topic.
Use TikTok’s recommendation and topic controls carefully
Manage Topics
TikTok describes Manage Topics as a way to adjust the balance of broad subject areas in the For You feed. It is a preference control, not a keyword-level blocklist, and it may not be offered identically in every country or account.

Because it works at the subject level, it may reduce a category without removing every creator, phrase or trend associated with it. Check the For You feed again after making a change and continue using the app’s other feedback tools for individual videos.
Smart Keyword Filtering
TikTok’s February 2026 teen-safety announcement for its Philippines programme highlights Smart Keyword Filtering. That announcement is specific to a teen-safety rollout and location; do not assume that every adult account or every region has the same feature. If the option appears in your app, add terms you do not want recommended and review the resulting suggestions after a few days.
An announced feature is not proof of universal availability. Age, account status, country and app version can all affect whether a control is displayed, and a feature for teen accounts should not be treated as an adult default.
Do not confuse recommendation controls with sensitive-content filters
A topic preference changes the mix of subjects in a feed. A sensitive-content setting limits material classified as sensitive. They solve different problems and may be located in different parts of the app. Use both when you want fewer recommendations generally and a lower tolerance for sensitive material.
Stop unsolicited direct messages
Instagram: control requests, filter words and escalate abuse
Instagram provides controls for deciding who can send message requests and for filtering requests that contain selected words or phrases. Review those request and keyword-filter settings, especially if spam arrives from accounts you do not follow.
Message controls often distinguish between a primary inbox, requests and contacts such as followers. Restricting strangers may therefore change where a message goes rather than guarantee that no contact attempt is visible at all. Treat a request as contact from an untrusted account: do not respond simply to test the filter, and use the available block or report action.

It can reduce interactions from groups such as recent followers or accounts that do not follow you. When a particular account is harassing, threatening or repeatedly bypassing your preferences, block it. Use the in-app report flow for spam, impersonation, threats or other rule violations.
Do not reply merely to tell an unwanted sender to stop when the contact feels unsafe. A reply confirms that the account is active and can invite more attempts. Preserve evidence if you may need to report the behaviour, then block or report through the platform.
TikTok: choose who may message you
TikTok’s privacy guidance lets users choose who is allowed to send direct messages. Set the narrowest audience that fits your needs, and review separate options for message requests from followers or other account relationships if those choices are shown in your version of the app.

TikTok states that direct messaging is available only to users aged 16 and older. A younger account therefore cannot be made fully message-enabled by changing an adult account’s preference. Age, region and account status can also affect which controls appear.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Block and report when settings are not enough
- Block: prevents a specific account from continuing ordinary contact with you.
- Report: sends the account or message to the platform for a policy review; choose the category that best describes the conduct.
- Do not negotiate: repeated replies can increase contact and do not substitute for a platform restriction.
If the conduct is threatening or involves an immediate safety concern, keep relevant evidence and use appropriate local support in addition to the platform’s reporting process. Platform controls can limit an account’s access, but they do not replace help from a trusted adult, school, employer or emergency service when circumstances require it.
Limit who can see and interact with your posts
TikTok account and post visibility
TikTok’s privacy controls include public and private account choices, audience selection for posts and comment controls. A private account limits access to approved followers, while a post-level audience setting can narrow a particular upload without changing the whole account. Review comments separately: restricting who can view a video does not necessarily apply the same way to comments or other interactions.
Check each new post’s audience when sharing something sensitive. A private account is a broad account-level choice; a post-level audience is a narrower adjustment. Neither setting changes the recommendation profile you receive in the For You feed.
Instagram follower approval and interaction choices
Switching an Instagram account to private makes you approve followers before they can see posts intended for followers. It does not erase existing followers, so remove accounts you no longer trust. Pair follower approval with the recommendation, message and block controls described above; each addresses a different route of exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReview followers after a public period or a sudden increase in unwanted contact. Changing to private controls future approval, but an account that already follows you may remain until you remove it.
Facebook audience and review tools
Facebook’s Privacy Checkup walks through core visibility choices. Use audience selection on individual posts when a post should not be public. Tag and timeline review settings let you review tags before they appear on your profile and control how tagged material is displayed. These settings govern your profile and posts, not every recommendation shown elsewhere in Facebook.
Teen accounts and family supervision
Teen protections can differ from adult settings. Check the account’s recorded age before troubleshooting a missing message or recommendation option. TikTok says direct messaging is available only from age 16, and its Family Pairing tools allow a parent or guardian to manage controls for a linked teen account. Family Pairing does not make every setting identical across regions, so both the supervising and teen accounts should follow the current in-app instructions.
Do not assume that a teen-safety default applies to an adult account, or that a setting announced for one country has launched everywhere. If a control is absent, check the platform’s current help information for your country and app version rather than repeatedly changing unrelated privacy options.

A practical lock-down sequence
- Start with the feed. Mark representative unwanted posts Not interested; adjust Instagram content settings or TikTok topic controls; and use Instagram’s reset option if the whole recommendation profile is wrong.
- Remove persistent sources. Mute or unfollow accounts that repeatedly generate unwanted material. Do not interact with posts you are trying to see less often.
- Restrict new conversations. Set Instagram message-request permissions and keyword filters. On TikTok, choose the narrowest available group that may send direct messages.
- Handle active offenders. Block the account and report the message or profile when it violates platform rules or feels threatening.
- Protect your own material. Review public or private account status, post audiences, comments, follower approval and Facebook tag or timeline review.
- Test from the right perspective. Check the feed while signed into the affected account and consider whether the unwanted material is a recommendation, an ad, a post from an existing follow or a message request; each follows different rules.
- Recheck after changes. Revisit settings after a major app update, a change in age or account type, or a change in who follows you.
Why a restriction may appear not to work
The same topic returns through another account
Recommendation systems use ongoing behaviour. A single hidden post does not block every account discussing the subject. Continue marking unwanted examples, adjust topic or sensitive-content controls and mute recurring sources.
You changed privacy, but recommendations did not change
Account privacy limits who can see your material; it does not directly rewrite the feed you receive. Use recommendation controls for that problem.
A message still arrives as a request
Stopping strangers from reaching your primary inbox may move their contact into a requests area rather than remove it completely. Use request filters, avoid replying and block or report the sender.
A menu or option is missing
Labels and availability change with app version, country, age and account type. Look for the current official help article for the exact platform and account category. Do not infer that a setting is broken merely because another person can see it.
A setting changed but the experience is unchanged
Give recommendation changes time to affect later selections, and check whether you changed the correct surface. A setting may affect suggested posts but not content from accounts you already follow, messages already in a request folder, or tagged material on your profile.
What default settings can and cannot achieve
Ofcom’s 13 July 2026 summary of mock online trials illustrates why defaults matter without proving what any one person will experience. Nearly seven in ten children retained a default that excluded harmful content, compared with five in ten when no default was presented. Among adults, 15% switched from an “All content types” default to “Reduced sensitive content”; 24% chose reduced content when no option was preselected; and 42% accepted reduced content when it was preselected.
Those figures describe trial choices, not guaranteed platform outcomes. Real decisions can be affected by social norms, peer influence and the surrounding interface. Treat a protective default as a useful starting point, then verify the account’s actual settings.

Keep the lock-down effective
- Audit each app independently; changing Instagram does not change TikTok or Facebook.
- Record which accounts are blocked and which words are filtered so you can maintain the list consistently.
- Recheck after updates because menu names, defaults and feature availability can change.
- When circumstances change—new school or work contacts, a public post, a new follower or a safety concern—repeat the visibility and message review, not just the feed reset.
- Ask whether each control is solving exposure, contact or visibility. If the answer is unclear, test one category at a time instead of changing every setting at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will making my account private stop unwanted recommendations?
No. Private-account settings limit access to your posts and usually require follower approval; recommendation controls determine what the service suggests to you.
Why can I still receive a message after restricting strangers?
The platform may route contact from an allowed relationship into message requests rather than the primary inbox. Use request filters, avoid replying, and block or report the account if necessary.
Best Value
Can a parent enable TikTok direct messages for a child under 16?
TikTok states that direct messaging is available only to users aged 16 and older. Family Pairing can manage controls for a linked teen account but does not remove that age condition.
What should I do when a setting described online is missing?
Check the platform’s current official help information for your country, age category, account type and app version. Features announced for a particular region or teen programme may not be available on every account.
Does Instagram’s Not interested control permanently block a topic?
No. It sends a negative recommendation signal and should reduce similar suggestions, but recommendations continue to adapt to later follows, likes, comments and viewing behaviour.
Is TikTok Manage Topics the same as a keyword blocklist?
No. Manage Topics adjusts broad subject areas in the For You feed. It is different from keyword-level filtering and may not be available in the same form for every account or country.
What is the difference between a message request and a blocked message?
A request is contact routed to a separate area under the platform’s permissions; it may still be visible. Blocking targets a specific account and prevents ordinary further contact through that account.
Will a private account remove followers I already approved?
No. Switching to private requires approval for future followers, but existing followers remain unless you remove them yourself.
Are Ofcom’s default-setting percentages guarantees for my account?
No. The 13 July 2026 figures came from mock online trials and describe choices under different default presentations, not guaranteed outcomes on a particular platform or account.
The Bottom Line
Lock down recommendations, messages and visibility separately. Use feedback, topic and reset tools to reshape feeds; narrow message permissions and block or report unwanted contact; then review account, post, comment and tag audiences. Recheck after updates because availability depends on the platform, region, age and account type.
