You have two practical ways to protect apps without Samsung Secure Folder: use your phone maker’s built-in App lock feature, if present, or use Private Space on an eligible phone running Android 15 or later. App lock puts an authentication gate on selected apps in your normal phone environment. Private Space creates a separate, locked Android profile and installs a new copy of the app inside it.
Check for App lock first if you want to protect an app you already use. If your phone does not offer it, look for Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Private space. The exact menus and availability depend on your model, Android release, region, and any manufacturer or administrator policy.

Decide which kind of protection you need
“Lock an app” can mean two different things. A manufacturer App lock normally protects an existing installation: you choose apps such as Messages, Photos, or a banking app, and the phone requests a privacy credential before opening them. Private Space works differently. It creates a separate profile, and you install a second instance of the app there. The original app remains outside the space.
| Route | What it does | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer App lock | Requires a privacy credential for selected apps in the normal phone environment. | You want to protect an existing app without reinstalling it. | Availability, menu location, and behavior vary by phone and software release. |
| Android Private Space | Creates a separate Android profile, installs a new app instance, and locks or hides the entire space. | You want a protected area and accept a separate app setup. | The original app’s data is not copied; locked apps stop running and cannot show notifications. |
| Samsung Secure Folder | Provides another protected area on supported Samsung devices. | Useful only as a comparison when evaluating separate-space designs. | It is outside the method in this guide, and Samsung says it may not appear on unsupported devices. |
Before following any steps, decide whether you need to protect the current installation or create a clean, separate instance. That choice determines whether you must sign in again, whether notifications continue, and where the app’s data is stored.

Check for a built-in App lock first
Open Settings and use its search field for App lock. Depending on the manufacturer, the control may be grouped under Privacy, Security, Apps, or a similar heading. There is no single Android-wide menu path for this feature.
If the search result opens a setup page, read its wording carefully. Confirm which apps are selected, what credential the prompt uses, and whether the feature protects the app every time it opens. Test with a non-sensitive app first, then lock the apps that contain private conversations, photographs, documents, or financial information. Keep the phone’s main screen lock enabled; App lock is an additional gate, not a replacement for device authentication.
Xiaomi phones
Xiaomi documents a built-in App lock workflow. You select the applications to protect, create or confirm an access credential, and then open those selected apps through the App lock prompt. Labels and placement can differ between MIUI or HyperOS versions and individual models, so use the wording displayed on your phone rather than assuming a path from another Xiaomi device.
After enabling it, close one selected app completely and open it again to verify that the lock appears. Check every app you intended to protect: selecting one application does not automatically protect related apps, exported files, or a second installation of the same service. If you later remove App lock or change its credential, review the selected-app list again.
OnePlus phones
OnePlus’s Android 13 user guide lists App lock as a system feature. On a supported build, open Settings and search for App lock, then choose the apps and privacy credential requested by the setup screen. A different OxygenOS release or regional build may place the option elsewhere or omit it.
OnePlus documentation is tied to a particular software guide, so do not infer that every OnePlus model has identical controls. If your Settings search finds a similarly named privacy feature, open its help text and verify that it gates individual apps rather than only hiding files or notifications.
If App lock is missing
Do not assume that Android itself is malfunctioning. Some manufacturers do not ship an App lock control, and an update can move or remove it. If Settings search returns no matching feature, check for Private Space instead. This article does not treat an unverified third-party locker as equivalent to a system feature: its permissions, reliability, and behavior depend on the particular app.

Use Private Space on Android 15 or later
Private Space is Google’s built-in separate-profile option. Google’s Android 15 announcement describes it as “a digital safe on your phone.” It is not a password prompt layered over your current installation. You create the space, install an app inside it, and authenticate to enter that separate profile.

Confirm that your phone is eligible
- The phone must run Android 15 or a later release that includes Private Space.
- Open Settings and look for Security & privacy > Privacy > Private space. If the entry is absent, the manufacturer may have disabled it, the device may be managed by an organization, or another user/profile restriction may apply.
- Managed devices and some supervised or multi-user configurations cannot use the feature. An Android 15 version number alone does not guarantee availability.
Check eligibility on the phone you actually plan to use. A feature shown in an Android demonstration, or available on an unlocked model, may be hidden on a carrier, enterprise-managed, or region-specific build. If the menu is missing, updating random settings will not bypass an administrator policy.
Create the space
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Private space.
- Authenticate with the phone’s current screen lock when prompted.
- Follow the setup screen. You can use the same lock as the device or create a new lock dedicated to Private Space. A separate lock prevents the Private Space credential from being identical to the main device credential.
- Choose whether to add a separate Google Account. This is optional, but using another account can reduce private-area data, such as downloads or app activity, from appearing in places associated with your primary account.
Record the choice you make. Using the main lock is simpler, while a dedicated lock gives the private profile a distinct credential. Whichever option you select, do not rely on the profile as a place to store the only copy of an important file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstall the app inside Private Space
- Open the Private Space container from the launcher or the Private Space settings screen.
- Install the app from within that space.
- Sign in again if the app requires an account. Private Space installs a new instance; it does not move or copy the original app or its local data.
The original app outside Private Space remains available unless you separately remove it. If you want only the protected copy, uninstall or disable the ordinary installation only after confirming that its data is backed up or no longer needed.
Plan the setup as a fresh installation. Saved sessions, downloaded documents, locally stored photographs, in-app preferences, and messages held only on the old installation do not appear automatically. For an account-based service, make sure you know the password and any two-step verification method before removing the ordinary copy.
Choose when the space locks
Private Space can be locked manually from its launcher container. Google lists automatic options including:
- Every time the device locks
- Five minutes after screen timeout
- Only after the device restarts
Use the most frequent setting when the phone may be handled by other people. A less frequent setting reduces repeated authentication but leaves the private profile available for longer after you stop using it. Lock the space manually before lending the phone, even if your automatic policy is less frequent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Hide the container when it is locked
Enable Hide private space when it’s locked if you do not want the container visible in the launcher. The space hides the next time it is locked. Hiding changes where the entry appears; it does not change the profile’s separate storage or authentication requirement.
Verify the result by locking the space, returning to the launcher, and checking that the container is no longer shown. Hiding is not the same as deleting: unlocking or opening Private Space through its settings makes the profile available again.
Understand what a locked Private Space does
It stops apps as well as hiding them
When Private Space is locked, apps in that profile cannot run foreground or background activity and cannot show notifications. A health tracker, messaging client, authenticator, or other app that must sync or alert you may therefore be unsuitable for exclusive use inside the space.

That behavior is intentional. If a service must receive a time-sensitive alert, leave its notification-dependent copy in the main profile and protect it with App lock when the phone provides that feature. Do not assume that unlocking the phone itself also unlocks Private Space; the profile has its own lock state.
It does not duplicate your existing data
Installing an app in Private Space starts a separate data area. Photos, downloads, saved sessions, and in-app settings from the ordinary installation are not copied automatically. You may need to configure the app again and sign in a second time.
Move only the files you deliberately need. Before deleting the ordinary installation, open the private copy and confirm that accounts, documents, and settings are present. A successful app installation does not prove that its old local database or downloaded content transferred.
It protects the profile, not every copy of the app
If the same app remains installed outside Private Space, that ordinary copy is governed by the phone’s normal screen lock and any App lock you configure. Someone who can open the unprotected copy can still see its data. Remove or separately protect that copy if your goal is to keep the app completely out of the main profile.
Back up data before changing or deleting the space
Deleting Private Space removes the apps and their local data in that profile. Without a device backup that includes the space, the local data cannot be restored by recreating it. Data that the app already synchronized to its own cloud service may become available after you reinstall the app and sign in, but that depends on the app’s own backup and account behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check that important documents, photos, messages, and files have been exported or synchronized.
- Confirm that you know the account credentials for every app installed in the space.
- Do not delete the space merely to troubleshoot a missing app until you have checked what data exists only locally.
- Open each critical app after setup and verify that its cloud sync completed; an account login alone does not guarantee that every local file was uploaded.
If you decide to remove the profile, treat the confirmation screen as permanent deletion of its local contents. Recreating Private Space later gives you a new profile, not a restored copy of the old one.
Common problems and the right response
Private Space does not appear
Verify the Android version, then search Settings for “Private space.” If the menu is still absent, the phone maker may have disabled the feature, an enterprise administrator may block it, or the current user/profile arrangement may be unsupported. Installing Android 15 on another device is not a workaround for a manufacturer or policy restriction on this phone.
The app still appears in the main launcher
That is expected when the ordinary installation remains outside Private Space. Private Space does not convert or relocate it. Uninstall the ordinary copy only after checking its data, or protect that copy separately with the manufacturer’s App lock.
Notifications stopped
Check whether the Private Space is locked. Locked apps are stopped and cannot publish notifications. Unlock the space when you need to use or synchronize those apps, or keep notification-dependent services in the main profile and protect them with App lock if your phone provides it.

The app asks you to sign in again
A second sign-in is normal because the Private Space installation has separate app data. Use the account intended for that private instance and complete any additional verification the app requests.
You cannot find a universal App lock path
App lock is a manufacturer feature, not a single menu shared by every Android phone. Search Settings, consult the manual for your exact model and software release, and avoid applying instructions written for a different brand or version.
You forgot the Private Space credential
Use the recovery or reset choices shown by your phone’s Private Space settings. Do not erase the space until you understand whether that action will remove local app data; deletion is destructive unless the data exists in a separate backup or cloud account.
The private copy is installed but cannot do its normal job
First check whether the space is locked. A locked profile intentionally blocks background work and notifications. If the app needs continuous operation, move that function to the main profile and use App lock, or accept that you must unlock Private Space whenever the service needs to run.

You removed the ordinary copy and lost files
Do not assume the private installation contains the old files. Private Space does not copy local app data. Restore from the app’s cloud service or another backup if one exists; otherwise, data stored only in the deleted installation may not be recoverable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use screen pinning only for temporary lending
Screen pinning can keep another person inside one app while you hand over the phone briefly. It is not a lasting lock on selected apps for ordinary daily use, and it does not create a private profile. Android’s exact screen-pinning controls vary by release, so verify the steps on the phone before relying on it. For ongoing protection, use App lock or Private Space instead.
Security choices that prevent common mistakes
- Use a strong device screen lock even when you create a separate Private Space lock; the private profile is still on the same physical phone.
- Choose a different Private Space credential if you need separation from the main lock and can remember both credentials safely.
- Review which copy of an app stores sensitive data. Protecting a duplicate inside Private Space does not secure an unprotected copy outside it.
- Remember that a privacy screen protector only limits viewing angles. It does not authenticate users and is not an app-lock replacement.
- Keep Android and the phone maker’s software updated, but recheck the menu after major updates because feature names and placement can change.
- Test the lock before handing over the phone. Open the protected app or lock the private profile, then confirm that the expected prompt appears and that unprotected copies are not still exposing the same information.
Which option should you choose?
Choose manufacturer App lock when
- You want the existing installation and its current data to remain in place.
- You need selected apps to continue operating in the normal profile, subject to the phone maker’s implementation.
- Your phone’s Settings clearly provides App lock and lets you choose the apps to protect.
Choose Private Space when
- You need a separate profile rather than a prompt on the ordinary installation.
- You accept reinstalling apps and signing in again.
- You want the profile to disappear from the launcher when locked and do not need its apps to run or notify you while locked.
Use neither as a substitute for a backup
App locking and Private Space control access; they are not independent backup systems. Before moving sensitive work into a new profile, verify that the app’s own cloud synchronization or another backup method is working.
Bottom line
Search Settings for App lock first if you want to gate apps already installed on your phone. If that feature is missing and the device runs Android 15 or later, set up Private Space at Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Private space. Remember the decisive difference: App lock protects an existing app, while Private Space installs a separate instance that is hidden and fully stopped when locked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I lock an app without installing another app?
Yes, if your phone includes a manufacturer App lock feature. Search Settings for “App lock.” If it is unavailable, Android 15 or later may offer Private Space, but that installs a separate app instance rather than locking the existing one.

Does Private Space lock the app I already installed?
No. Private Space creates a separate Android profile and a new installation. The original app and its local data remain outside the space unless you remove them separately.
Will Private Space apps send notifications while locked?
No. Google says apps in a locked Private Space cannot run foreground or background activity or show notifications. Unlock the space or keep notification-dependent services in the main profile.
Why is Private Space missing on my Android 15 phone?
Android 15 alone does not guarantee the feature. A manufacturer may disable it, an enterprise administrator may block it, or supervised, multi-user, or other profile eligibility limits may apply.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do I need a second Google Account for Private Space?
No. A separate account is optional. Google says it can reduce private-area data, such as downloads or app activity, from appearing outside the private profile, but you can set up the space without one.
Can I use the same app in both the main profile and Private Space?
Yes. Private Space installs another instance while the ordinary installation remains available. Protect or remove the ordinary copy too if it contains sensitive information.
What happens if I delete Private Space?
The apps and local data in that profile are removed. Data synchronized to an app’s own cloud service may be recoverable after signing in again, but local data is not restored unless it exists in a separate backup.
Is screen pinning a replacement for App lock?
No. Screen pinning is intended for temporarily lending the phone while keeping someone in one app. It is not a lasting, app-by-app privacy lock.
The Bottom Line
Use a manufacturer’s App lock to gate an existing installation. If your phone lacks it, Android 15 Private Space provides a separate, lockable profile—but you must reinstall and sign in again, and its apps stop and cannot notify you while locked.
