You can lock your Aadhaar biometrics through UIDAI’s myAadhaar website, the official Aadhaar app, an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The lock covers your fingerprint, iris and face authentication. While it is active, biometric authentication cannot be completed and UIDAI returns error code 330. To authenticate for a legitimate exam, KYC check or other service, use the same official service to request a temporary unlock; the unlock ends when the authority-set period expires or the authentication transaction finishes, whichever happens first.
A registered mobile number is required for the online and app process because UIDAI uses OTP or app-based verification. If your number is not registered with Aadhaar, update it at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Mobile Update End Point before trying to lock or unlock biometrics.

After biometric locking is enabled, an organisation cannot complete an Aadhaar authentication transaction using any of those modalities. UIDAI identifies the locked-biometric condition with error code 330. The lock is intended to strengthen privacy and confidentiality when you are not actively using biometric authentication.

Locking biometrics does not delete your Aadhaar data, cancel your Aadhaar number or stop every possible form of Aadhaar verification. It specifically blocks biometric authentication. OTP-based or demographic authentication may be governed by separate settings and by the requirements of the service requesting verification.
Biometric lock is different from locking the entire Aadhaar number
UIDAI also offers Aadhaar (UID) lock and unlock. That is broader: when the UID is locked, biometric, demographic and OTP authentication using the UID, UID Token and VID are blocked until the UID is unlocked. Do not select the broader UID-lock service when your objective is only to stop fingerprint, iris or face authentication.

What you need before locking or unlocking
A mobile number registered with Aadhaar
UIDAI requires a registered mobile number for the lock and unlock service. The number is used for OTP-based security and SMS commands. If you have changed numbers or never registered one, visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or a Mobile Update End Point and request a mobile-number update. Online or app-based locking cannot substitute for this in-person update.

Use one of these channels:
- The myAadhaar website at
myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in - The official Aadhaar mobile app
- An Aadhaar Enrolment Centre
- An Aadhaar Seva Kendra
Interface names and the sequence of prompts can change. Follow the labels currently displayed by UIDAI rather than relying on screenshots from an older guide. Do not use an unverified app, a third-party “biometric lock” service or a device marketed as necessary for this procedure.

Identity verification
Expect an OTP, an in-app verification step or both. UIDAI’s current app documentation describes registration as entering the Aadhaar number, selecting the SIM, completing face authentication and creating a six-digit PIN. The app then provides access to biometric lock and unlock. The exact screens can vary by app release and phone.
How to lock biometrics on the myAadhaar website or Aadhaar app
- Open an official channel. Go to the myAadhaar portal or open the official Aadhaar app. On the website, sign in as prompted. In the app, complete registration and verification if this is your first use.
- Choose the biometric lock/unlock service. Select the service specifically labelled for biometric locking or unlocking. Check that you have not entered the separate Aadhaar (UID) lock service.
- Select the lock option. Review the notice explaining that fingerprint, iris and face authentication will be disabled, then choose the command to lock biometrics.
- Complete verification. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number or complete the verification requested in the app. If the app asks for the six-digit PIN or face authentication established during registration, finish those steps in the app itself.
- Wait for confirmation. Keep the confirmation screen or message for your records. A later biometric authentication attempt should be rejected while the lock is active and identified by UIDAI’s locked-biometric error code 330.
The lock applies to all three biometric modalities together. You cannot use the service to leave fingerprint available while blocking only iris or face authentication.
How to unlock biometrics temporarily for an exam, KYC or another transaction
Unlock only when you are ready to complete the legitimate authentication that requires biometrics. The unlock is temporary, not a permanent change that remains open indefinitely.
- Return to the official service. Open myAadhaar or the Aadhaar app and select biometric lock/unlock.
- Choose temporary unlock. Select the unlock command rather than the permanent-looking UID unlock option. Read the confirmation message before proceeding.
- Verify your identity. Complete the OTP or in-app verification requested by UIDAI. Use the registered mobile number and do not disclose an OTP or app PIN to another person.
- Perform the biometric authentication promptly. At the exam centre, KYC desk or other legitimate service, start the authentication while the temporary unlock is active. Tell the operator that your biometrics had been locked if the first attempt fails before the unlock is confirmed.
- Let the temporary state end. Under regulation 11 of the Aadhaar Authentication and Offline Verification Regulations, 2021, temporary unlocking cannot continue beyond the period specified by the Authority or completion of the authentication transaction, whichever is earlier.
UIDAI does not promise one universal number of minutes or hours for every temporary unlock. The permitted period can be stated in the current service prompt, and completion of the relevant authentication can end the unlock sooner.

Using SMS OTP and the 1947 service
UIDAI’s FAQ states that OTP authentication is mandatory for Aadhaar lock/unlock and for biometric lock/unlock SMS functions. From the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, request an SMS OTP by sending:
GETOTP followed by the last four or eight digits of your Aadhaar number to 1947.
Follow the format shown by UIDAI if the current SMS instructions differ. Keep the message on the registered number; a request sent from another number will not satisfy the registered-mobile requirement.

VID generation and retrieval are separate from biometric locking. They can reduce the occasions on which you disclose the full Aadhaar number, but they do not by themselves lock fingerprint, iris or face authentication.
Using a centre when online access is unavailable
An Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra is the assisted route listed by UIDAI for this service. Take your Aadhaar details and the mobile phone with the registered number. Ask the operator specifically for biometric lock or temporary biometric unlock, not the broader UID lock, and verify the service selected before approving it.
If your mobile number is missing or incorrect, request the mobile update first at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Mobile Update End Point. Once UIDAI has the correct number, you can use the OTP-based web, app or SMS flow. Centre procedures, identity checks and local availability can vary, so follow the instructions displayed or given by the authorised facility.

What to do when a lock or unlock does not work
You never receive the OTP
- Confirm that the phone is using the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
- Check signal, SMS storage and whether the phone is blocking service messages.
- Wait for the current request to expire before making repeated requests.
- If the number is no longer yours, update it at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Mobile Update End Point.
The app cannot complete registration or face verification
Check that you selected the correct SIM and that the app has the permissions it requests. Follow the current in-app face-verification instructions in good lighting and keep the app updated from its official distribution channel. If registration still fails, use myAadhaar or an authorised centre rather than installing an unofficial substitute.
A biometric attempt returns error 330
Error code 330 indicates that UIDAI considers the biometrics locked. Return to the official biometric lock/unlock service, complete temporary unlock verification and wait for confirmation before trying the fingerprint, iris or face scan again. If the transaction was already completed or the permitted unlock period ended, request a new temporary unlock.
The service asks for UID lock instead
Stop and check the service name. Biometric lock/unlock is the setting for fingerprint, iris and face. UID lock/unlock affects biometric, demographic and OTP authentication using UID, UID Token and VID. Selecting the wrong service can block more authentication methods than you intended.
An operator says the biometric is still unavailable
Confirm that the temporary unlock was completed for the same Aadhaar holder and that the operator is attempting authentication after confirmation. If the allowed period has elapsed, repeat the temporary-unlock process. If the problem persists, use an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment Centre for assisted troubleshooting and follow the current UIDAI instructions.
