Decide whether you are targeting mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, or several markets; choose the appropriate script and locale; prepare the game’s text and UI for localization; then adapt and review the experience in context. If you plan official publication or monetization in mainland China, treat that as a separate approval and publishing path: a Chinese translation alone does not provide approval.
Choose the audience and release path first
“Chinese” does not identify one script, locale, or publishing route. Mainland China is a natural starting point for Simplified Chinese; Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau use Traditional Chinese. Taiwan and Hong Kong can also differ in vocabulary and colloquial phrasing, so a shared script does not guarantee that one build will feel equally natural in both markets.

Decide whether you need one Chinese-language build or market-specific versions. A single Traditional Chinese version may suit some games, while character-driven dialogue, humor, community posts, and frequent live updates can benefit from separate Taiwan and Hong Kong treatment. Keywords Studios’ 2026 guidance recommends considering audience and release path when selecting the setup; use in-market linguistic expertise where the writing and ongoing content justify it.
| Decision | Mainland China | Taiwan | Hong Kong | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Vocabulary and colloquial language | Mainland usage | Taiwan usage | May differ from Taiwan usage | Reuse without review can make dialogue or community copy sound unnatural. (Keywords Studios, 2026) |

These distinctions concern language and the specific official mainland route described below; they do not establish what every Chinese-speaking player prefers or how every game is accessed.

Use explicit locale identifiers
Represent language, script, and region explicitly in your product architecture and store metadata. Netflix Games’ internationalization documentation gives platform-specific examples: it lists zh-Hans for Simplified Chinese in iOS and Netflix resource bundles and zh-CN for Google Play; for Traditional Chinese it lists zh-Hant for iOS and Netflix resource bundles and zh-TW for Google Play. These examples are not universal platform rules: verify the codes required by the storefront and delivery platform you use.
Prepare the game and UI for localization
Internationalization is an engineering and content-pipeline task, not just a translation handoff. Netflix’s requirements warn that hard-coded English and text burned into images will not pass through a normal string-localization pipeline.

- Externalize visible text. Store menus, dialogue, item names, notices, and other user-facing strings in resource bundles rather than embedding them in code.
- Keep keys stable and add context. For ambiguous strings, provide the screen, speaker, character, use case, and any variable placeholders. A short label may need a different translation depending on where it appears.
- Check fonts and rendering in the build. Confirm that the selected font and text-rendering pipeline support the target character set. The reviewed guidance does not specify a universal font requirement; it depends on your engine and target platforms.
- Localize image-based text where needed. Identify signs, building labels, overlays, and other text baked into art, then plan translated assets or another appropriate treatment.
- Include supporting material. Give the team scripts, character biographies, audio, walkthroughs, style guides, and playable builds. Include storefront, web, marketing, and support copy in the plan so it is consistent with the game.
Microsoft’s game-localization guidance recommends reviewing or testing each language version. Inspect actual menus, dialogue boxes, subtitles, signs, item names, and overlays: a translation that reads well in a spreadsheet may still be clipped, obscured, or hard to follow on screen.

If foreign-language speech remains in the game, decide how players will understand it in the scene. Guidance for Chinese-language games hosted on Alibaba Open Platform recommends subtitles for substantial foreign-language audio. Treat that as platform-hosted guidance, not a universal legal rule, and verify subtitles in the actual scene for timing and readability.

Adapt language and narrative for the intended experience
Good localization preserves the scene’s purpose, tone, character relationships, and world-building—not each source-language phrase in isolation. Microsoft’s game-specific guidance notes that humor and cultural references may need adaptation: a joke can require a different expression, a replacement, or a different place in the dialogue to preserve its effect. Translators need enough scene and character context to make that choice rather than guess from a bare string.
Apply adaptation to the game you are making and the audiences you intend to serve. The available sources do not establish a single set of tastes shared by all Chinese players, nor do they show that every title needs a deep redesign. Consider genre, characterization, intended rating, release markets, and content review when deciding what to change.

For official mainland approval, MFAT’s September 2026 market report says reviewers consider cultural messaging, whether character design and dialogue align with mainstream values, and possible overseas political metaphors or sensitive symbols. These are approval considerations, not a complete public checklist or a guarantee of acceptance.

Alibaba Open Platform’s Chinese game-text guidance recommends standardized Chinese text conventions for imported games, including Simplified Chinese for imported-game text, standard Chinese characters for names and locations, and attention to user-generated text, conduct, religion, and cultural material. Its legal authority and current application are not established here, so treat it as guidance rather than binding law for every game or market. Separately, Article 3 of the Ministry of Education regulation on the use of the national common language in information technology products, published January 3, 2023 and effective March 1, 2023, states that such products should conform to state language standards. Its application depends on the regulation’s scope; it is not a universal game-localization checklist.

Review each localized version in context
Language-specific review should happen in the playable product, not only in exported text. Provide reviewers with the material needed to understand what they see and hear, then give them a build in which they can inspect the strings in their intended context.
- Check the main user journey: startup, menus, tutorials, gameplay prompts, dialogue, settings, and error messages.
- Look for text clipping, awkward line breaks, hard-to-read overlays, and layout problems in the target script.
- Check names, terminology, character voice, subtitles, and consistency between the game and its storefront or support material.
- For live-service games, plan how terminology, colloquial language, community posts, and updates will be reviewed as they evolve. Keywords Studios’ 2026 guidance recommends specialists for the market variant.
Assess official mainland China publication separately
This process is relevant if you plan official publication or monetization in mainland China. It is not the same as adding Chinese to a global storefront, and the report’s description should not be generalized to every Chinese-language release or every player’s access to a game. According to New Zealand MFAT’s September 2026 market-entry report, the broad path is:
- Find a mainland operator and publisher. The report says an overseas company cannot apply for the Game Publishing ISBN directly and must partner with a mainland Chinese operator and publisher.
- Register the software copyright certificate for the imported game through the process described in the report.
- Review the content and compliance plan with the operator and publisher. The report describes prohibited-content categories and review attention to cultural messaging, character design, dialogue, art style, and potentially sensitive political metaphors or symbols.
- Prepare the submission materials. The report lists the game build, scripts, text, video, assets, monetization design, real-name authentication, and anti-addiction mechanisms among the materials and systems to address.
- Plan for user-protection and operational requirements. The report lists data localization where personal information is collected, real-name verification, age-based protections, a healthy-gaming splash screen, privacy terms, and display of the license number.
- Submit through the publisher. The report describes the ISBN application moving through the publisher and provincial publishing authority to NPPA.
MFAT says the approval timing is not published and may range from a few months to a year or longer; that is a reported range, not a promised turnaround. Requirements can change, so confirm current details with the mainland operator and publisher and relevant official sources before launch.
