Loading a RYOBI stapler correctly depends on its exact model. The USB Lithium FVN51 opens and loads differently from the 18V ONE+ design, while the Australian RST4 4-in-1 kit accepts a broader set of fasteners. Check the label on the tool before choosing staples, then follow the matching procedure below.
Identify the exact stapler before opening the magazine
“USB Lithium” and “18V” are product families, not single specifications. Regional model names also differ. The US USB Lithium operator manual covered here is for model FVN51. RYOBI Australia identifies its USB Lithium 4-in-1 kit as RST4K and the included stapler as RST4. Those labels should not be treated as proof that every USB Lithium tool uses the same magazine or fasteners.

The 18V name is similarly broad. The loading procedure in RYOBI’s support guide applies to an 18V ONE+ stapler, while the cited R18ST50 manual and US P317 product page describe particular models with their own staple ranges. Confirm the model number printed on the tool and use the manual for that market.

- Write down the complete model code, including letters and numbers. “18V” alone is not enough to select a staple strip.
- Note the market in which the tool was sold. A US FVN51 manual, an Australian RST4 product page and an Australian R18ST50 manual describe different products and documentation.
- Match the model code to the manual or support page before buying replacement fasteners.
- Keep the model information with the tool if you buy staples in bulk; packaging that says only “for an 18V stapler” does not establish compatibility.
| Model or source | Opening mechanism | Supported staple information | Published capacity or indicator |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB Lithium FVN51 (US operator manual, revision 02, 2024) | Squeeze the magazine latch and slide the magazine open | Manual specifies the staple orientation: crown down, legs up, in the middle channel against the magazine’s right side | Side window indicates when staples are running low; capacity is not stated in the cited manual |
| USB Lithium RST4 (Australian product information) | USB Lithium family magazine; use the exact RST4 instructions for your market | T50 staples 6–10 mm, JT21 staples 6–10 mm, T25 staples 10–14 mm; also accepts 15 mm 18-gauge brad nails | Up to 58 T50 staples |
| 18V R18ST50 (operator manual, revision code 20190412v1, Australian market) | Magazine released with a bottom toggle; cartridge pulls back to expose the track | T-50 staples with a 10 mm (3/8-inch) crown and 6–14 mm (1/4–9/16-inch) length | 85 staples |
| 18V P317 (US product listing) | Use the model’s own magazine instructions | 3/8-inch crown staples, 1/4–9/16-inch length; listing says it is compatible with Arrow T50 | Capacity is not stated on the cited listing |
The R18ST50 and P317 entries are separate products. Their similar 18V descriptions do not make their magazines, labels or recommended fasteners interchangeable.

Safety checks before loading
- Remove the battery pack before opening either cited stapler. This prevents an accidental trigger event while your hands are near the magazine and discharge area.
- Keep fingers away from the nose of the tool. The RYOBI FVN51 Operator’s Manual, revision 02 (2024), states: “Always keep your fingers away from the discharge area of the tool when driving a fastener.”
- Use only the staple profile and length listed for the exact model. A strip that does not fit the track, or that is outside the supported range, can jam or damage the stapler.
- Do not force a latch, cartridge or staple strip. If the magazine does not release using its designed control, stop and check the model manual.
- Keep the removed battery away from the tool while loading. Reinstall it only after the magazine is fully closed and latched.
Prepare the tool and staples
Set the stapler on a stable surface or hold it securely before opening the magazine. Have the correct, intact strip ready so you do not leave the tool open while searching for fasteners. Inspect the strip for bent staples, a distorted crown or separated legs. A damaged strip can sit crooked in the track even when its nominal profile and length are correct.
Staple dimensions describe different parts of the fastener. The crown is the bridge that rests on the workpiece; the legs are the two points driven into it. RST4 information distinguishes T50, JT21 and T25 profiles, while the R18ST50 and P317 specifications refer to a 3/8-inch crown and specific length ranges. Do not substitute one profile merely because the legs appear to be the same length.
How to load staples into the USB Lithium FVN51
These steps follow the US FVN51 operator manual. They apply to the FVN51 label, not automatically to every USB Lithium stapler sold in another region.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →1. Remove the battery
Take the USB Lithium battery pack out of the tool and set it aside. Do not continue while the pack is installed.
2. Turn the tool upside down
Hold the stapler with its underside facing upward. This position gives you access to the magazine latch and keeps the loading channel visible.
3. Release and slide the magazine
Squeeze the magazine latch, then slide the magazine open. The latch should release with normal hand pressure. If it resists, verify that you are pressing the latch rather than pulling on the magazine body.
4. Place the staple strip in the correct channel
Find the middle channel inside the magazine. Set the staples against the right side of that channel with the crown—the bridge that will rest on the material—facing down and the legs pointing upward. This crown-down, legs-up orientation is the specific arrangement described for FVN51 staples.
Seat the strip flat along the channel rather than diagonally across it. The strip should not protrude from the track or rock from side to side. If it does, stop and verify the FVN51 fastener specification instead of forcing the magazine closed.
Do not use this staple orientation as a nail-loading instruction. The FVN51 manual explains nail loading separately because brad nails are shaped and positioned differently.

5. Close the magazine
Slide the magazine back into the tool until it clicks. A click indicates that the latch has engaged. Do not fire the tool if the magazine remains partly open or can slide back out without releasing the latch.
6. Check the low-staple window
The FVN51 has a side indicator window that shows when staples are running low. Use the window as a visual check during work rather than waiting for an empty magazine to produce a misfire. The cited FVN51 manual does not give a staple-capacity number, so do not apply the RST4 or R18ST50 capacities to it.
How to load staples into an 18V ONE+ stapler
The following sequence is the one in RYOBI’s support guide for an 18V ONE+ stapler. It uses a different release control from the FVN51.
1. Remove the 18V battery
Remove the battery pack before touching the magazine. Keep the battery away from the tool while you load it.
2. Press the magazine toggle
Locate the toggle switch at the bottom of the magazine and depress it. This releases the magazine assembly.
3. Pull the cartridge back
With the toggle depressed, pull the magazine cartridge backward until the staple track is exposed. Pull it only as far as the mechanism allows; do not pry or twist the cartridge.
Recommended Free Tools
4. Load the compatible staples into the track cavity
Place the staple strip in the exposed track cavity. RYOBI’s support guide recommends 10 mm T50 staples for the cited 18V ONE+ stapler and warns that another gauge or type can damage the tool. If your model label is R18ST50, its manual permits T-50 staples 6–14 mm long, with a 10 mm (3/8-inch) crown. The shorter 10 mm recommendation is therefore one supported choice, not a universal length for every 18V model.
Keep the strip aligned with the track cavity and make sure no staple is standing on edge. If the strip does not enter smoothly, withdraw it and check the model-specific profile and length. Never shave, bend or modify a staple to make it fit.
5. Push the cartridge closed
Push the cartridge forward until it clicks into place. The latch must fully engage before the battery is reinstalled. A cartridge that stops short, sits crooked or opens without pressing the toggle is not secured.

Choosing the right staples for each model
There is no single universal “RYOBI staple.” Profile, crown width and leg length must match the tool. Use the following published ranges as model-specific guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Tool | Staple profile | Length range | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| FVN51 USB Lithium | Use the profile specified by the FVN51 manual | Refer to the FVN51 manual for the exact fastener range | Its manual provides the loading orientation, but the cited material does not establish that every RST4 fastener fits FVN51 |
| RST4 USB Lithium 4-in-1 | T50; JT21; T25 | T50 6–10 mm; JT21 6–10 mm; T25 10–14 mm | Choose the profile and length for the job and the RST4 label |
| R18ST50 18V | T-50, 10 mm (3/8-inch) crown | 6–14 mm (1/4–9/16 inch) | The manual’s 85-staple magazine specification applies to this model |
| P317 18V | 3/8-inch crown; listing cites Arrow T50 compatibility | 1/4–9/16 inch | Confirm the P317 instructions before substituting staples sold for another 18V model |
The RST4 product information also lists 15 mm 18-gauge brad nails. Nails are not staples: do not place them in the staple channel or use the FVN51 staple orientation for them. Follow the nail-loading section of the manual for the exact tool.
Capacity and refill planning
The RST4 product information says its magazine holds up to 58 T50 staples. The R18ST50 operator manual lists a capacity of 85 staples. Those numbers are model-specific and should not be used to estimate the capacity of an FVN51, P317 or another regional model. FVN51 users should watch the side indicator window because the cited manual describes a low-staple indication but does not state a capacity.
Capacity is a maximum, not a reason to compress or force extra staples into a channel. Stop loading when the published track is full and the magazine closes normally. If a strip leaves the cartridge unable to click shut, remove it and verify both the profile and the number of staples.
What to do when a strip will not fit
The magazine will not open
First remove the battery again and check the release method. FVN51 uses a squeeze-and-slide latch. The cited 18V procedure uses the bottom toggle followed by a backward pull on the cartridge. Pulling on the wrong part can make the magazine feel stuck.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The staple strip sits loosely or rocks in the track
Stop before closing the magazine. Compare the strip’s profile and length with the model-specific range. A T50 strip is not automatically suitable for a JT21 or T25 channel, and a staple outside the permitted length can prevent the driver from operating correctly.
The cartridge will not click shut
Remove the strip and inspect the track for a staple sitting sideways, an overfilled channel or debris. Reload the correct strip in its proper position and close the magazine without forcing it. If it still will not latch, leave the battery removed and consult the model manual or RYOBI service support.
The tool misfires after loading
Do not repeatedly pull the trigger to clear a misfire. Remove the battery, open the magazine using the correct release, and check for a bent staple or a strip that does not match the tool. For the FVN51, confirm crown-down and legs-up placement in the middle channel against the right side. For the cited 18V procedure, confirm that the cartridge was pulled back far enough to expose the track and then pushed forward until it clicked.
You bought staples labeled only “for an 18V stapler”
That description is insufficient. Compare the staple profile, crown and length with the exact model manual. The R18ST50 manual’s 6–14 mm T-50 range and the support guide’s 10 mm T50 recommendation describe particular 18V products, not every tool carrying the 18V name.

The wrong fastener was loaded
Remove the battery before attempting to correct it. Do not fire the tool to empty an incorrect strip. Open the magazine with the model’s intended release, remove the fasteners, and inspect the track for a bent or displaced staple. Reload only after the profile and length have been confirmed.
Final pre-use check
- Verify that the battery is still removed while you inspect the magazine.
- Confirm that the strip is seated fully in the track and is not tilted or protruding.
- Check that the magazine or cartridge has latched with an audible click.
- Keep your hand clear of the discharge area before reinstalling the battery.
- Use a suitable scrap piece of material for the first drive and observe whether the staple seats cleanly. If it bends, jams or fails to drive, remove the battery before investigating.
- For an FVN51, glance at the side indicator window so you know whether a refill is needed soon.
- For an RST4, remember that the listed staple choices are T50 6–10 mm, JT21 6–10 mm and T25 10–14 mm; the separate 15 mm option is an 18-gauge brad nail, not a staple.
Quick comparison: which procedure applies?
| If the label says | Open the magazine by | Key loading detail | Fastener reminder |
|---|---|---|---|
| FVN51 USB Lithium | Squeezing the latch and sliding the magazine, with the tool upside down | Crown down, legs up, middle channel against the right side | Use the FVN51 manual for the exact profile and range |
| RST4 USB Lithium | Following the RST4 instructions for the market where it was sold | Do not assume FVN51 orientation or capacity applies | T50 and JT21 6–10 mm; T25 10–14 mm; up to 58 T50 staples |
| 18V ONE+ covered by the support guide | Depressing the bottom toggle and pulling the cartridge back | Load the exposed track, then push the cartridge until it clicks | Guide recommends 10 mm T50 |
| R18ST50 | Bottom toggle and retracting cartridge | Close until latched | T-50, 6–14 mm, 10 mm crown; 85 staples |
| P317 | Use the P317 instructions | Do not infer the mechanism from another 18V model | 3/8-inch crown, 1/4–9/16 inch; Arrow T50 compatibility listed |
This comparison is a selection aid, not permission to interchange magazines or fasteners. When the label and packaging do not agree, stop and verify the model manual before loading.
Frequently asked questions
Do all RYOBI USB Lithium staplers load the same way?
No. The cited US manual is specifically for the FVN51, while RYOBI Australia identifies the RST4 tool in the RST4K kit. Confirm the complete model code and market before applying the FVN51 squeeze-and-slide steps.
Can I use RST4 staples in an FVN51?
Do not assume so. RST4 product information lists T50, JT21 and T25 ranges, but the cited FVN51 material establishes its orientation rather than proving that every RST4 fastener fits FVN51. Use the FVN51 manual’s own fastener specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat staples does the cited 18V ONE+ guide recommend?
It recommends 10 mm T50 staples and warns that another gauge or type can damage the stapler. That recommendation applies to the cited 18V ONE+ guide, not automatically to every 18V model.
What is the maximum staple length for the R18ST50?
The R18ST50 manual lists T-50 staples from 6 to 14 mm long, with a 10 mm (3/8-inch) crown. Its stated magazine capacity is 85 staples.
How many T50 staples fit the RST4?
The RST4 product information says the magazine holds up to 58 T50 staples. This figure should not be transferred to FVN51 or another model.
Why does the FVN51 need the crown down and legs up?
That is the orientation specified by the FVN51 operator manual for staples in the middle channel against the magazine’s right side. Brad nails are loaded separately and must not be oriented as staples.

What should I do if the magazine will not click?
Remove the battery, take out the strip and check for a sideways staple, debris or an overfilled channel. Verify the exact model’s profile and length, then reload without forcing the latch. If it still will not engage, consult the model manual or RYOBI service support.
Are 15 mm brad nails interchangeable with staples?
No. The RST4 listing identifies 15 mm 18-gauge brad nails as a separate fastener category. Do not put nails in a staple channel or use staple orientation instructions for them.
Bottom line
Identify the model first, remove its battery, and use the release mechanism designed for that tool. FVN51 loads upside down through a squeeze-and-slide magazine with the crown down and legs up. The cited 18V ONE+ procedure uses a bottom toggle and a retracting cartridge, with 10 mm T50 staples recommended for that guide. RST4, R18ST50 and P317 specifications differ, so verify the profile, crown, length and capacity for the exact label before you buy or load a strip.
