Yes, but only if the handheld supports the software your game needs. An Android e-ink reader can install compatible games and emulators, then open legally obtained game files. A closed e-reader generally cannot install arbitrary apps, while a dedicated gaming handheld may use its own launcher and file rules. Check the exact model, operating-system version, app-store access, storage, refresh controls and input options before downloading anything.
What “e-ink handheld” means for gaming
E-ink handhelds fall into three different categories, and the installation process is not interchangeable:

- Open Android readers: These can usually install compatible Android applications through an app store or, where supported, by sideloading an APK. An emulator is a separate application from the game files it opens.
- Closed e-readers: These may provide only the manufacturer’s reading store and built-in applications. If there is no supported app-install route, you cannot treat the device like an Android tablet.
- Dedicated gaming devices with e-ink displays: These can have a custom launcher, firmware and controller layout. Follow that device’s manual instead of Android instructions.
The steps below describe the Android workflow, with BOOX Palma 2 and Palma 3 as concrete examples. They do not establish that every e-ink reader supports Android games, emulators, controllers or the same file formats.

Check compatibility before you install anything
Find the exact model and operating system
Open the device’s settings and note the model name, Android version or proprietary firmware version, available storage and current firmware. Also check whether an official app store is present. BOOX says current manuals and update packages are available through device settings, so update guidance should come from the instructions for your specific model.

These specifications describe the products, not measured gaming performance. A newer Android version or more storage does not guarantee that a particular game, emulator or controller will work.
Confirm the game’s input and display needs
Before transferring a game, identify whether it expects touch input, physical buttons, a keyboard, a gamepad or a particular screen orientation. The official device material reviewed here does not establish universal controller pairing or button mapping. A game that depends on rapid animation, precise scrolling or a high frame rate may feel very different on e-ink from the same game on an LCD or OLED screen.
Turn-based, puzzle, card, text-heavy and slower games are sensible candidates to test first. This is an expectation based on e-ink refresh behavior, not a compatibility promise from the manufacturer.
Install a compatible game or emulator
Use the official app store when available
- Connect the reader to Wi-Fi and open its official app store.
- Search for the game or emulator by its exact name.
- Read the listing’s Android-version, processor, input and storage requirements.
- Install it, then open it once so it can create its data folders and request any permissions.
On an Android reader with Google Play, this is the least ambiguous installation route. Store availability, regional restrictions and application compatibility still vary by model.
Sideload an APK only when the model supports it
BOOX help guidance describes downloading APK files in a browser or sideloading them from a computer. Because the exact menu labels and security controls differ by model and firmware, use the current instructions for your reader. Only install APKs from a source you trust, verify that the application supports your Android version and remove the installer file after use if you do not need it.

An APK installs an Android application; it does not automatically provide the game content that an emulator needs. Do not assume that an APK advertised as an emulator contains legally usable copies of commercial games.

Obtain game files lawfully
An emulator and a game file are separate things. The emulator is the software that interprets a platform’s code. The game file is the content it opens, and the emulator’s documentation determines which formats it can read.
Use game files obtained through a lawful source and follow the rules that apply where you live. This guide does not determine whether making a personal copy, downloading a backup or using a particular format is legal in your jurisdiction. Owning a physical cartridge or disc does not, by itself, answer every legal question about downloading a replacement file. Do not use unauthorized ROM collections or assume that a file will work merely because its filename looks familiar.
The official device sources covered here do not publish a universal list of ROM formats. Check the chosen emulator’s documentation for supported extensions, required BIOS files and folder conventions rather than guessing.
Move game files to the handheld
Transfer with BOOXDrop over the local network
BOOX describes BOOXDrop as a two-way transfer method between a BOOX device and a computer or mobile device over the local network. Firmware notes explain that BOOXDrop replaced older transfer tools in the relevant firmware line and that the devices should use the same local-network Wi-Fi.
- Connect the reader and the sending computer or phone to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open BOOXDrop on the reader and follow its displayed pairing or transfer instructions.
- Choose the game files on the sending device and send them to a folder you can identify, such as a dedicated games folder.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before closing BOOXDrop or disconnecting from Wi-Fi.
- Open the emulator and use its file browser to navigate to the transferred folder.
The precise pairing screen, destination folder and file-size limits depend on the firmware. If the devices cannot see one another, confirm that both are on the same local network rather than one being on a guest network or mobile hotspot.

Use USB-C OTG storage
Palma 2 specifications list USB-C OTG, and Palma 3 specifications list OTG as well. On a compatible model, an OTG adapter can connect a USB flash drive or another supported peripheral.
- Copy the lawfully obtained game files to a USB drive using a computer.
- Connect the drive to the reader with a compatible USB-C OTG adapter.
- Open the reader’s file manager and locate the external drive.
- Copy the files into internal storage or open them from the drive if the emulator permits external access.
- Eject the drive through the file manager before unplugging it.
External-storage permissions, filesystem support and power limits vary. If the drive does not appear, try a different adapter or a smaller, appropriately formatted drive and consult the device manual.
Use a microSD card
Both Palma 2 and Palma 3 product specifications list a microSD slot. This can keep large game libraries off internal storage, but the emulator still needs permission to read the card and may require a folder to be selected through Android’s file picker.
- Insert the card while the reader is powered off if the manual recommends doing so.
- Format or prepare it using the filesystem and procedure supported by the reader.
- Create a clearly named folder for game files.
- Copy the files from a computer, insert the card and allow the reader to mount it.
- In the emulator, browse to the card and select the required file or folder.
Do not remove the card while a game is loading or saving. If the reader reports that the card is unreadable, back up its contents before reformatting.
Open the game in the emulator
- Launch the emulator after the game files are on the reader.
- Use the emulator’s own file picker or library-scan function to select the folder containing the files.
- Choose a file in a format documented by that emulator.
- If the emulator asks for a BIOS file, provide one only when you have obtained it lawfully and the emulator’s documentation requires it.
- Set the game’s orientation, touch controls, audio and save location according to the options exposed by that application.
There is no universal ROM extension, BIOS requirement or menu path for every emulator. A file that works on a phone may fail on the reader because the application, Android version, processor, permissions or display mode differs.
Tune the e-ink display for play
Choose a refresh mode
BOOX lists four refresh modes on Palma 2: HD, Balanced, Fast and Ultrafast. BOOX describes Ultrafast as intended to improve response in third-party applications. Faster refresh can make motion more usable, while a higher-quality mode may reduce visual artifacts for static content. The best setting depends on the game and your tolerance for ghosting.

Refresh modes are not frame-rate guarantees. BOOX does not promise console-like gaming performance, and the product specifications do not establish a particular number of frames per second.

Use the reader’s app-optimization and refresh controls if they are available for the installed game. Change one setting at a time, play for several minutes and watch for ghosting, flashing, delayed input or excessive battery use. Keep a note of the setting that works for each game because a mode that suits a static puzzle may be unpleasant for scrolling action.
Set expectations for controls and performance
Touch input is not equivalent to a physical controller. Some games expose usable on-screen controls; others assume buttons, analog sticks or a keyboard. Bluetooth is listed on both Palma examples, but the supplied specifications do not verify a particular controller model or reliable button mapping. Treat controller support as a test item, not an assumed feature.
- Likely better fits: turn-based strategy, word games, card games, puzzles, interactive fiction and other games that tolerate deliberate screen updates.
- Potentially frustrating: twitch action, racing, rhythm and competitive games that depend on rapid animation or precise timing.
- Variable: games with scrolling maps, animated menus or touch gestures; the result depends on the emulator, refresh mode and input design.
An independent review of the Palma 2 Pro reported that some simple games were workable, but that account reflects one reviewer’s tests on one device. It should not be generalized to every Palma model, every emulator or every game.

The game or emulator is not in the app store
Check the exact Android version and region, then consult the developer’s requirements. If the model supports APK installation, follow the current manufacturer instructions for sideloading. Do not install an APK compiled for a different architecture or an untrusted mirror simply because the store listing is unavailable.

- Confirm that the transfer completed and that the files are in the folder you selected.
- Check the emulator’s documented formats and required BIOS files.
- Grant storage or file-picker access when Android requests it.
- Try copying one small, known-good file into internal storage to separate a permission problem from a damaged card or unsupported format.
BOOXDrop cannot connect
Put both devices on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network, reopen BOOXDrop and repeat the pairing process. A corporate, hotel or isolated guest network may block device-to-device discovery. USB-C OTG or a microSD card provides an alternative when local-network transfer is unavailable.

The display leaves trails or responds slowly
Test the available refresh modes, beginning with Fast or Ultrafast for motion-heavy screens and returning to a clearer mode for menus or reading. Reduce animated overlays when the game permits it. If the game remains unpleasant after tuning, the limitation is likely the combination of its design and the e-ink panel rather than a missing file.
Touch controls are unusable
Look for an in-game control layout, orientation switch or accessibility setting. If you try Bluetooth input, verify that the exact controller pairs with the reader and that the application recognizes its buttons; neither compatibility nor mapping is universal in the official specifications.
How to evaluate another e-ink handheld
Use these questions before buying or configuring a different model:

| What input methods are documented? | Touch, built-in buttons, Bluetooth and USB peripherals have different compatibility risks. |
| What are the screen size and color capabilities? | They influence readability, interface density and whether a game’s visual design remains usable. |
A specification sheet can establish operating system, storage, connectivity and refresh options. It cannot, by itself, establish that a particular emulator, controller or game will perform well. Test the exact combination whenever possible.
Safely remove games and protect saves
Keep save files in a location documented by the emulator and back them up before changing storage or reinstalling the application. When deleting a game, remove only the files you recognize; save data and configuration files may be stored separately. Eject USB and microSD storage through the operating system before disconnecting it, and avoid transferring files over an untrusted public network.
Bottom line
An e-ink handheld can play games when its operating system, application-install route, emulator, game files and input method all line up. Android examples such as BOOX Palma 2 and Palma 3 provide third-party-app support, removable storage and several ways to transfer files, but neither model’s specifications promise universal emulator or controller compatibility. Start with a legal, slow-paced game, verify the emulator’s file requirements, transfer the files through a supported route and tune the refresh mode on the exact device you own.
