YouTube’s documented encoder workflow supports external microphones and audio hardware; the available guidance does not establish a general audio-only mode. If you want listeners to hear audio without watching a camera, use a suitable visual component and test the full setup before going live.
Can you stream audio only on YouTube?
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe a stream that sends audio and video, and do not document a general audio-only livestream mode. For a broadcast centered on sound, plan to send a video component too—for example, a static image or other visual—and confirm that your encoder and YouTube preview accept it. The sources here do not prescribe a particular visual or establish that every encoder handles a still image the same way.

If you prefer to appear on camera and have a straightforward setup, YouTube offers a webcam route. An encoder is the better fit when you need to route an external microphone, mixer, or other audio hardware, or want more control over production.
Check channel access before the event
YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel needs to be verified and must not have a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. The streamer must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access well before the scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming help

Set up the audio stream with an encoder
- Create the stream. In YouTube Studio, select Go Live, then create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream URL and stream key. Copy both into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key as sensitive: it directs the encoder to your stream and allows YouTube to accept its feed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Connect and select your audio source. Connect your microphone or other source to your computer, audio interface, mixer, or encoder as appropriate for your equipment. Select that input in the encoder and speak or play audio to confirm its level meter responds. YouTube supports external audio hardware generally; it does not prescribe a particular device or signal chain.
- Choose compatible audio settings. For stereo audio, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not a stated minimum-quality threshold. If your encoder offers them, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and RTMPS. Match the available options in your encoder to YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube’s encoder settings
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start a test stream and check the YouTube preview. Listen on a second device if possible. Confirm that the intended microphone is live and listen for silence, clipping, background noise, or audio/video sync issues. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s streaming guidance
- Check your upload connection. The total stream bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom, rather than using the full upload capacity. Check both speed and stability before relying on the connection for a live event. YouTube’s streaming tips
- Go live and monitor the broadcast. Start streaming from the encoder, wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health, then start the stream in Studio. Keep monitoring the audio and stream health while live.
- End the broadcast and check the replay. End the stream in Studio, then stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer broadcast, check current Studio behavior and keep a separate recording if the replay matters. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Microphones and other audio equipment
Start with the microphone you already have
A USB microphone can be a practical choice for a spoken-word stream, interview, lecture, or podcast-style broadcast, but test your existing microphone before buying anything. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary; the important first step is confirming that the sound and connection work for your setup. YouTube live-streaming tips
When an interface or mixer helps
An audio interface may suit an XLR microphone, while a mixer can help when you need to combine multiple guests or sources. Neither is required for a simple one-microphone broadcast, and adding hardware means more connections and settings to check. Choose it to solve a real input or mixing need, not as a prerequisite for streaming.

| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No audio in the preview | The selected encoder input and its level meter. | Select the connected microphone or audio device, then test again and confirm the meter responds before going live. |
| Audio is distorted or clips | Whether the signal is too strong at the source or in the encoder. | Lower the input level and repeat a test while listening to the YouTube preview. |
| Audio drops or the stream is unstable | Whether the total stream bitrate is within stable upload capacity. | Check the connection and lower the aggregate stream bitrate if needed; retain roughly 20% upload headroom as YouTube recommends. |
| Audio and video are out of sync | The encoder’s input and sync behavior during a test broadcast. | Test the complete signal path before the event and adjust the encoder’s sync controls if available; the specific control depends on the encoder. |
| The stream does not appear in Live Control Room | That the correct stream URL and key were entered and the encoder is sending its feed. | Recheck the destination and key in the encoder, then wait for the preview before starting the broadcast in Studio. |
