You can listen online by streaming music through a service, or prepare for an internet-free trip by downloading music in a supported app or taking compatible audio files on a portable player. The key distinction: a streaming-service download is usually playable only inside that service’s app; it is not a transferable MP3 file.
Choose how you want to listen
Pick the option that fits your connection, subscriptions, and devices:

- Stream online: Play music through a service while you have an internet connection. This is convenient when connectivity is reliable, but it does not prepare your music for a dead zone.
- Download in a music app: Save music for offline playback before you leave. The files are managed by the service and generally remain within its app rather than becoming ordinary audio files you can copy elsewhere.
- Use local audio files: Copy compatible files to a phone or portable music player. This gives you files that can play independently of a streaming app, subject to the device’s supported formats and storage.
Before choosing, consider whether you will have reliable internet before departure, whether your existing plan includes offline downloads, whether you want app-managed music or independent files, and whether you prefer carrying a phone or a dedicated player.

Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music document offline listening features. The exact eligibility and terms depend on the service, plan, country, and current app controls, so check your local account before relying on a feature.

Spotify
Spotify’s US Premium feature page says subscribers can download albums, playlists, and audiobooks, keep downloads on up to five devices, and retain them by connecting each device to the internet at least once every 30 days. These are the terms stated on Spotify’s US page, not a universal rule for every market or plan. See Spotify Premium features.
Spotify says downloaded songs can be played completely offline. Its downloads are not exportable MP3s for a separate player; use the Spotify app for this music. See Spotify’s offline listening guide.

Apple Music
Apple says subscribers can add music to their library, download it, and play it offline. Apple describes its catalog as containing over 100 million songs; that is Apple’s own catalog claim, not an independent count. See Apple Music and Apple’s guide to adding and downloading music.

Prepare and test your offline music
- While online, open the service app you plan to use and select the albums, playlists, or tracks you want. Use that app’s download controls.
- Wait for the download to finish. Check the app’s status rather than assuming that a selected playlist is already stored on the device.
- Test playback without a connection. Turn on airplane mode or disable Wi-Fi and mobile data, then play a few downloaded tracks in the app. This can reveal incomplete downloads or account requirements before you leave.
- Check storage, battery, and download settings. Leave enough device storage and charge for the trip. If the service offers download-quality or cellular-download controls, choose settings appropriate to your data allowance and available Wi-Fi.
Can you play downloaded streaming music on an MP3 player?
Usually, not by copying the download from the streaming app. App-managed downloads are not ordinary MP3 files, and Spotify does not officially offer export of its tracks for a separate player. Do not try to extract subscription downloads to bypass those restrictions.
A dedicated player can work well if you have compatible local audio files. Before buying or loading music, check the exact model’s supported file formats, storage capacity, and whether it supports any streaming apps you intend to use. Some current players offer streaming apps, but support varies by model; the product name “MP3 player” alone does not establish compatibility. Headphones are optional—not an offline solution
Headphones let you hear music privately or without using a speaker, but they do not provide internet access or make streaming tracks available offline. Apple says Dolby Atmos music plays automatically when available with compatible Apple or Beats headphones or most Bluetooth headphones. That audio feature does not change the need to download music in advance for an offline trip. See Apple Music.
