To listen to a video game soundtrack on YouTube while your phone is locked, use the YouTube mobile app with an eligible, signed-in YouTube Premium account. Open Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play, select Always on, start the soundtrack video, and lock the screen. Playback should continue as audio.
YouTube Premium is the clearly stated option for background playback that includes music content. Premium Lite began receiving background play for most videos in 2026, but YouTube does not describe Lite as covering music content. Because a game soundtrack upload may be treated as music, do not assume Lite will work for every soundtrack video.

What you need for YouTube screen-off listening
YouTube calls the screen-off feature Background Play. Its Help documentation says: “Background Play is available on YouTube mobile apps when you’re signed in with your YouTube Premium membership account.” The feature is intended for mobile playback when the app is in the background or the device screen is off.
For a soundtrack video, four conditions matter:
- You are using the official YouTube mobile app rather than a desktop browser.
- The active YouTube account is signed in and has an eligible Premium membership.
- Background Play is not set to Off.
- The upload is a normal video, not a video playing in the YouTube Shorts player.
Headphones, earbuds, a Bluetooth speaker, or the phone’s own speaker can be the output. None of those devices grants background-play eligibility; the entitlement comes from the account and plan.

YouTube’s full Premium membership is the least ambiguous choice for game music because YouTube explicitly describes it as supporting background playback that includes music content. The exact behavior of a particular soundtrack upload can still depend on how YouTube classifies that upload.

Turn on Background Play in the YouTube app
Step-by-step setup for YouTube Premium
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture, then open Settings.
- Select Background & Downloads.
- Tap Background Play.
- Choose Always on.
- Open the video containing the game soundtrack and start playback.
- Press the phone’s power button to lock the screen, or leave the YouTube app and let the device sleep.
YouTube identifies Always on as the default setting. The same menu also offers Off and Headphones or external speakers. The latter setting restricts background playback to an attached audio device, which can be useful if you do not want sound to come from the phone speaker.

Once the screen is locked, the video normally continues as audio. Controls for play, pause, seeking, and track position may appear on the lock screen or in the operating system’s media controls. The exact control layout is supplied by the phone’s operating system, not by the soundtrack uploader.
Confirm that the correct account is active
Premium access follows the account currently signed in to YouTube. If several Google accounts are configured on the device, check the profile picture before testing. A family or shared membership also requires that the account you are using is included in the eligible membership.

If Background Play is missing, greyed out, or does not persist after you leave the app, switch to the account that actually holds the membership and repeat the setting change. A subscription on a different account does not unlock background playback for the account currently playing the video.
Test a soundtrack and fix playback that stops
A reliable test
- Choose a standard, long-form soundtrack upload rather than a Short.
- Start playback while the YouTube app is in the foreground.
- Lock the screen for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Wake the phone and check whether the audio position advanced.
- Unlock the device, leave YouTube for another app, and test again.
Testing both a locked screen and ordinary app switching distinguishes a setting problem from a video-specific restriction. A video that fails only in Shorts is expected to fail because YouTube excludes the Shorts player from Background Play.

- Check the account: confirm the profile currently playing the video has the eligible Premium membership.
- Check the menu: return to Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play and make sure it is Always on rather than Off.
- Check the player: use a normal video page, not the Shorts player.
- Check the app state: force-closing YouTube ends playback; leaving the app or locking the screen should not.
- Check the connection: if the video has not buffered, a weak mobile or Wi-Fi connection can interrupt playback after the display turns off.
After changing the account or setting, stop the video and start it again before retesting. This gives the app a fresh playback session and avoids diagnosing an old session that was created under a different account or setting.
If only one soundtrack upload fails
Try another ordinary video from the same channel or a different soundtrack upload. YouTube’s public guidance explains the account and feature requirements, but it does not provide a rule that classifies every user-uploaded game soundtrack. A single upload can therefore behave differently from another video even when your account and settings are correct.
Do not use a Shorts version of a track as the test case. The Shorts player is specifically outside the Background Play feature, so switching Premium accounts will not change that limitation.

Premium versus Premium Lite for game soundtracks
Plan names matter because YouTube has described the two tiers differently. On February 24, 2026, The YouTube Team announced background play and downloads for most videos on Premium Lite. The rollout is occurring in markets where Premium Lite is available, rather than being a single worldwide launch date.

A soundtrack may be an official music upload, an extended gameplay video, a fan compilation, or another format that YouTube classifies differently.

If you already have Premium Lite, test the exact soundtrack you intend to hear before starting a long listening session. If it stops when the screen locks, that result may reflect the video’s music classification rather than a faulty phone. Upgrading to full Premium is the plan-level change YouTube identifies for background playback that includes music.
Picture-in-picture is not the same as screen-off playback
Picture-in-picture (PiP) keeps a small, floating video window visible while you use other apps. Background Play removes the visible video and continues the audio after the screen is locked. PiP is useful when you want to watch the artwork, a visualizer, or gameplay while messaging; it is not required for listening with the display off.
YouTube says that dismissing the PiP window continues playback in Background Play mode for Premium members. That makes PiP a transition into audio-only playback, not an alternative entitlement for a locked screen.

Enable PiP on an Android phone or tablet
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Apps → YouTube → Advanced → Picture-in-picture.
- Allow picture-in-picture for YouTube.
- Open YouTube and go to Settings → Playback.
- Turn on the YouTube picture-in-picture option.
- Play the soundtrack, then leave the YouTube app. The video should shrink into a floating window.
Android menu wording can differ by device and Android version. If the floating window does not appear, check both permissions: the Android system permission and the YouTube app’s own Playback setting.
YouTube’s Android Help page limits PiP for music content to Premium members. Its examples include official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated song covers. The page does not explain how every video game soundtrack upload is classified, so do not treat a PiP result as a universal rule for all soundtrack videos. The general method is the same on iPhone and iPad: sign in to the YouTube mobile app with the eligible Premium account, set Background Play to Always on, start the soundtrack, and lock the device.
Exact iOS menu labels and placement can change with YouTube app releases and iOS versions. The available guidance establishes the general Premium requirement and Background Play setting, but not a device-specific iPhone or iPad menu path. Use the labels shown in your current YouTube app rather than assuming an Android-style system menu exists.
If playback stops on iOS, first verify the account and the in-app Background Play setting, then test a standard long-form video. Do not use a Short as the diagnostic video.
Choosing a playback setup

Make long soundtrack sessions more dependable
Use a normal video rather than a Short
Many soundtrack channels publish full albums, extended mixes, individual tracks, and gameplay videos. Select a standard video page for background listening. A Short may be convenient for discovering a track, but it is outside YouTube’s Background Play support.
Decide whether you need video or only audio
If you want the screen off, PiP adds no benefit after the device is locked. Set Background Play to Always on and use the normal lock-screen controls. If you need to see a visualizer or gameplay while using another app, configure PiP instead and keep the floating window open.
Choose the output before locking the phone
Connect headphones, earbuds, or a speaker before starting the session if you want a private or external listening device. The Headphones or external speakers Background Play choice can prevent accidental speaker playback, but the connected device remains only an output route; it does not substitute for the required membership.

Background playback streams the video while the device is connected to the internet. YouTube’s 2026 Premium Lite announcement also discusses downloads, but downloading and background playback are separate behaviors. A downloaded soundtrack, where the account and market support that feature, still does not change the rule that music-content coverage must be checked against the plan’s terms.
Common misunderstandings
- “Headphones unlock screen-off YouTube.” They only provide an audio output. Eligibility comes from the signed-in plan.
- “PiP means the screen is off.” PiP keeps a video window visible. Background Play is the mode intended for a locked display.
- “Premium Lite always works for soundtracks.” YouTube’s wording covers most videos and separately directs readers to full Premium for music content.
- “Every YouTube upload supports the same behavior.” YouTube does not publish a classification rule for every game soundtrack upload, so the exact video matters.
- “A Short is just a short version of a normal video.” The Shorts player is excluded from Background Play even when the subject is the same song.
Bottom line
For dependable screen-off listening, use the YouTube mobile app with full YouTube Premium, select Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play → Always on, start a standard soundtrack video, and lock the phone. Premium Lite may work for some videos, but YouTube does not promise music-content coverage for that tier. Use Android PiP only when you want a visible floating video; it is a different experience from locked-screen Background Play.
