A text-to-speech (TTS) feature speaks the text in the ebook file using your phone, computer, or e-reader voice. A narrated audiobook is a separate edition, usually recorded by a human. Check which format you own, then use the app or device that supports it. A retailer’s ebook and a library’s audiobook may be separate catalog items with separate availability.
You may already have everything you need. Google Play Books, Kindle apps and compatible Kindle e-readers can speak eligible ebook text; Libby can play a borrowed audiobook or send ebook text through an operating-system screen reader. A dedicated e-reader is optional, not a prerequisite.

Text-to-speech for an ebook
Text-to-speech reads the words stored in an ebook with a synthetic device voice. It is useful when you already own an ebook and want hands-free reading, but it is not available for every title. The publisher, ebook structure, app, device model and installed speech language can all affect access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA narrated audiobook
An audiobook is an audio edition produced separately from the ebook. It may have a human narrator, sound design or a different release date. Having an ebook does not automatically grant the audiobook, and borrowing one format from a library does not guarantee the other format is available.

Listen in Google Play Books on Android
Google Play Books’ Read Aloud feature speaks eligible ebooks in the mobile app. Google states that the book must be displayed in flowing-text view. A publisher can disable the option; Google’s help documentation explicitly notes, “Not all books have this option.”
Turn on Read Aloud
- Open the ebook in the Play Books mobile app.
- Switch to flowing-text view. Read Aloud requires this mode; a fixed page layout may not expose the control.
- Tap the page to enter skim mode.
- Open the top-right menu and choose Read aloud.
- Tap the page again if you need to reveal playback controls while reading.
Start books automatically
To have Play Books begin speaking when a book opens, go to Profile picture > Play Books settings > Automatically read aloud. This setting affects books for which Read Aloud is available; it cannot override a publisher restriction.
Change voice, language or speed
Play Books uses Android’s default text-to-speech app. Adjust the voice, language and speech rate in Android Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output. The exact labels can vary slightly by Android version or manufacturer, but the relevant controls are the device’s TTS engine and installed voice data, not a separate Play Books voice system.
Use the natural voice option
Play Books offers a more natural reading voice when the feature is available. Google says that voice requires an internet connection. If you need offline playback, turn off More natural reading voice and use the regular device voice instead.
What about iPhone and iPad?
Google documents an iPhone and iPad help page covering Read Aloud or VoiceOver, but the current instructions are not established here. Do not assume the Android menu path is identical on iOS. Open the current Play Books help for your app version and follow its iOS-specific steps. If you need a dependable iOS route for an ebook borrowed through a library, Libby’s VoiceOver method below is documented separately.

Use Kindle Assistive Reader in an app
Assistive Reader can speak supported Kindle book text in Kindle apps on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Mac and Fire tablets. It uses the operating system’s TTS voice, so available languages, pronunciation and voice quality depend on the device.
Enable Assistive Reader
- Open the Kindle book in a supported app.
- Tap or select the top-center area of the page to show reading controls.
- Open reading settings by selecting Aa.
- Choose More, then enable Assistive Reader.
- Tap the page to reveal playback controls. Use play or pause, change speed, or rewind 30 seconds.
- To begin at a particular passage, long-press a word and select Play.
Books and accounts that may qualify
Amazon says the app feature works with eligible purchased Kindle books, Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading loans, other official Kindle partner sources and Family Library shares. Eligibility is title-specific; owning a Kindle book does not guarantee that Assistive Reader will appear.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Assistive Reader is missing
- Open the book’s detail page and look for Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled.
- Check that the book’s language is supported by the device’s TTS engine.
- Update the Kindle app and the device’s speech-language data if updates are available.
- Confirm that you are using a supported Kindle app rather than an unrelated ebook reader.
Enhanced Typesetting is a requirement in Amazon’s current documentation. A missing control can therefore reflect the book’s typesetting, language support or title eligibility rather than a fault with your phone.
Listen on a Kindle e-reader
A dedicated Kindle e-reader is optional. When its supported format and controls suit you, it can provide a focused reading device without notifications from a phone. Compatibility is narrower than the general statement “Kindle reads ebooks aloud,” however.
Compatible devices and languages
Amazon’s current help lists Assistive Reader for Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and higher, Kindle Scribe and Kindle Colorsoft. The listed languages are English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. The Kindle book must use Enhanced Typesetting.

- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Start playback
- Open a compatible Kindle book.
- Open Aa > More > Assistive Reader.
- Use the on-screen controls for play, pause, reading speed and rewind.
Because support depends on both the e-reader generation and the book, an older Kindle or a title without Enhanced Typesetting may not show Assistive Reader. Check the model and the book’s detail information before buying a device specifically for listening.
Use Libby for an audiobook
Libby’s audiobook player is different from ebook text-to-speech. It plays a narrated audiobook that your library has made available for borrowing. If you want a human-narrated edition, search the library catalog for the audiobook format rather than opening the ebook and looking for a TTS button.
Open a borrowed audiobook
- Open Libby.
- Go to Shelf > Loans.
- Select Open Audiobook.
- Press Play.
Libby provides playback controls including speed adjustment and a sleep timer. The title must be available through your library and checked out to your account; an ebook loan alone does not create an audiobook loan.
Read a Libby ebook with a screen reader
Libby supports screen readers for browsing and borrowing titles, reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks. The supported routes include VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack on Android and desktop screen readers such as NVDA and JAWS.
Use “Read From Here”
- Open the ebook in Libby’s reader.
- Place the reading position at the section where you want speech to begin.
- Choose Read From Here in the reader.
- Use the screen reader’s continuous-reading command if you want it to continue through the section or chapter.
Important iPhone and iPad distinction
Libby’s documented ebook reading mode on iOS requires VoiceOver. Apple’s separate Spoken Content feature is not the method Libby specifies for “Read From Here.” Turn on VoiceOver in iOS accessibility settings, then return to Libby and invoke the reader’s command.

Android and desktop
On Android, use TalkBack with Libby’s “Read From Here” command. On Windows or other desktop environments, Libby’s web experience can be used with a compatible screen reader such as NVDA or JAWS. The exact keyboard command for continuous reading belongs to the screen reader, so consult that software’s current controls if speech stops after one element.
Phone, e-reader or computer: which route fits?
| If you have… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An Android ebook in Google Play Books | Play Books Read Aloud | It is built into the mobile app when the title allows flowing-text speech |
| A Kindle book on a phone, tablet or Mac | Kindle Assistive Reader | Supported apps use the device’s TTS voice and offer speed and rewind controls |
| A newer compatible Kindle e-reader | Assistive Reader in Aa > More | A dedicated device can read eligible books without relying on a phone |
| A library audiobook | Libby’s audiobook player | You receive the narrated audio edition rather than synthetic ebook speech |
| A library ebook | Libby with VoiceOver, TalkBack or a desktop screen reader | Libby documents screen-reader reading, including “Read From Here” |
A computer is especially useful when you already use a desktop screen reader or want to read through a larger display. It is not a universal workaround for publisher restrictions: the ebook app and title still determine whether speech is exposed.

There is no read-aloud button
- Confirm that you opened an ebook, not an audiobook player. The controls are different.
- Check whether your app or device supports the feature. Play Books Read Aloud is documented for the mobile app; Kindle Assistive Reader is limited to listed apps and devices.
- For Play Books, switch to flowing-text view and reopen the menu.
- For Kindle, check Enhanced Typesetting and the book’s spoken-language compatibility.
- Consider a title restriction. Publishers can disable Play Books Read Aloud, and Kindle eligibility varies by book.
The voice or language is wrong
Both Play Books on Android and Kindle Assistive Reader in apps depend on the operating system’s TTS engine. Open the device’s accessibility speech settings, install the required language voice and select the preferred engine. If the language is not supported by the device or title, changing speed will not solve the problem.
Play Books’ natural voice will not work offline
Turn off More natural reading voice. Google says that option requires an internet connection; the regular device voice is the offline alternative.

You really want a narrated performance
Search your library catalog or retailer for the audiobook edition by title and author. Borrow or purchase that edition separately, then use the audiobook player. TTS cannot add narration, character voices or production elements that are not in the ebook file.
Before buying a dedicated e-reader
Buy an e-reader only if its supported device generation, book format and language match your listening needs. For Kindle Assistive Reader, that means checking for an 11th-generation-or-newer Kindle E-Reader, Kindle Scribe or Kindle Colorsoft, a book with Enhanced Typesetting and one of the listed speech languages. If most of your titles come from a library, verify that your library’s ebook and audiobook catalogs work with the app you already use.
- Identify where your books live: Play Books, Kindle, Libby or another supported reader.
- Check whether you need synthetic speech or a narrated audiobook.
- Confirm the title’s eligibility before changing devices.
- Check language and offline requirements.
- Use the phone or computer you already own before treating a new e-reader as necessary.
Accessibility and listening settings that matter
TTS speed, voice, language and continuous reading are controlled partly by the operating system. A book app can expose playback controls while still relying on Android, iOS, macOS or a screen reader for the actual speech engine. If speech sounds unnatural, skips punctuation or stops unexpectedly, first inspect the device’s voice package and screen-reader settings, then the book app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Screen-reader reading also changes navigation. “Read From Here” starts at the selected location, while a screen reader’s continuous-reading command determines whether it proceeds through paragraphs, controls or other interface elements. This is why Libby’s reader command and the platform screen reader must both be configured.
What to expect from compatibility
No single setting makes every ebook listenable. Flowing-text requirements, Enhanced Typesetting, publisher permissions, title eligibility, device generation and language support are separate gates. A book can open normally for visual reading yet omit a speech control. Conversely, a library may offer a narrated audiobook even when its ebook cannot be read aloud through the app.
When you know the format and platform first, the decision is straightforward: use Read Aloud for an eligible Play Books ebook, Assistive Reader for an eligible Kindle book, Libby’s player for a borrowed audiobook, or a screen reader’s “Read From Here” mode for Libby ebook text.
