Decide whether you need to unlink at all
An Xbox profile can be attached to only the EA Account shown in EA’s Connected Accounts area. If the game opens the wrong EA profile, first identify that connection and try to recover the existing account. Creating a second EA Account does not create a second copy of your Xbox progress.

Before you begin
Have access to the email inbox for the EA Account you intend to use. EA may send a one-time code during linking or an identity check during unlinking. If you cannot open that mailbox, recover the EA Account first rather than guessing at codes or creating another account.

Use the primary Xbox profile for the console, not a limited sub-account. EA says child and other restricted sub-accounts that share Xbox subscriptions cannot connect to EA Accounts for online play. A subscription being available on the console does not change that account-level requirement.
There is no separate console accessory, storage device or other product that fixes an EA account association. The important checks are the EA login, the Xbox platform identity and the eligibility shown in the live account settings.
How to link an EA Account to Xbox
1. Start an EA game on the Xbox console
Sign in to the Xbox profile that you intend to use for EA games, then launch the game. The linking prompt is normally presented from inside the game rather than from the Xbox system settings.
2. Use the primary EA Account
When the game asks you to sign in, enter the email address and password for the primary EA Account you want associated with that Xbox profile. Do not use a temporary, child or shared login if the account is intended for online play.
3. Complete email verification
If EA displays a one-time verification request, check the inbox for the email address on that EA Account and enter the code in the Xbox game. If the message is missing, check spam and confirm that you are looking at the mailbox belonging to the EA Account, not merely the address used for Xbox.
4. Allow the connection to finish
After successful authentication, close and reopen the game if it does not immediately recognize the account. A normal connection lets the game use the EA Account associated with the Xbox platform identity.
When the connection happens automatically
EA says that if the EA Account and the console account were created with the same email address, they should connect automatically when the game loads. Automatic matching is not proof that the desired EA Account is being used, so verify the result in Connected Accounts before buying content or starting a new save.

What to do if the game keeps asking you to sign in
Stop and identify the account rather than repeatedly submitting different credentials. Sign in to EA Account settings on the web, inspect Connected Accounts, and confirm whether the Xbox identity is already listed. If it is listed under another EA Account, recover that account before attempting any change. Repeated sign-in attempts cannot move the existing progress to a new account.
Check which EA Account is linked
- Sign in to the EA Account you can access through EA’s account website.
- Open Account settings.
- Select Connected Accounts.
- Look for the Xbox or other platform entry and confirm the attached identity.
If the Xbox entry is not shown in the EA Account you expected, sign out and check any other EA Accounts you may have used in the past. The entry shown there is the account EA associates with that Xbox platform account.
This check is especially important on a shared console. Changing the Xbox profile, changing an EA email address or installing the game again does not by itself transfer the platform connection. The specific Xbox identity displayed in Connected Accounts is the one that matters.

How to unlink an Xbox account from EA
1. Open Connected Accounts
Sign in to the EA Account that currently owns the Xbox connection. Go to Account settings, then Connected Accounts, and locate the Xbox platform row.
2. Select Unlink
Choose Unlink next to the Xbox account. If there is no button, or it is disabled, the account is not currently eligible for self-service unlinking. Do not try to bypass the restriction by repeatedly creating accounts.
3. Read the warning
EA presents a disclaimer describing what may be lost or become inaccessible. Read it before confirming; the warning is specific to the risks of removing the platform connection.
4. Complete identity verification
EA may ask for an additional security check, such as a code sent to the account email. Complete that check with the email account attached to the EA Account, then confirm the unlink request.
5. Link the Xbox account to another EA Account only when eligible
After the unlink succeeds, launch an EA game on Xbox and sign in to the intended EA Account. A successful unlink does not migrate the old account’s data, so verify that changing accounts is worth the consequences before starting this step.
Unlinking is not the same as changing an email
If you still control the same EA Account and only need a new email address, update that account’s details instead of unlinking Xbox. The existing account can retain its history while its contact information changes. Unlinking is for removing the platform association and carries separate eligibility and entitlement risks.
Eligibility rules that can prevent a switch
The one-year restriction
EA’s current linking troubleshooting says that a platform account linked less than one year ago cannot yet be unlinked and relinked to a different EA Account. If the connection is newer than one year, the recommended route is to recover the existing EA Account rather than waiting for a workaround.
A connection older than one year should generally be eligible to unlink and relink, but that is not an automatic approval. The individual account’s security status, history and live settings determine whether the control appears.
The rolling-year switch limit
EA’s unlinking guidance says linked accounts can be switched up to three times in a rolling year. This is a policy limit, not a guarantee that an account can switch immediately: the account’s individual eligibility, security status and other restrictions still control whether the button appears.
Because the limit is rolling, previous switches can continue to matter even if they were not made recently. Check the account’s current eligibility instead of assuming that an unused-looking Xbox profile has a fresh allowance.

Disabled, banned or suspended accounts
EA says a disabled, banned or suspended account cannot unlink its platform account. Resolve the account-status issue through EA’s account or enforcement support process first. If the difficulty is specifically with the Xbox platform account, EA’s troubleshooting directs users to Xbox support.
What can be lost or stranded after unlinking
Unlinking removes the relationship between the Xbox identity and the EA Account; it is not an account merge. EA states that game progress will not transfer when the platform account is attached to a different EA Account.

These are access and retention risks, not a promise that every item will disappear in every title. The safe assumption is that anything earned or purchased through the original EA Account stays associated with that account unless EA explicitly says otherwise.
EA SPORTS FC web and Companion Apps
For EA SPORTS FC, unlinking the platform account currently active in the Web or Companion App can remove access to those apps. If another eligible platform account is available, EA advises changing the active platform account first, but that step does not eliminate the general unlinking risk.
Apex Legends effects
Apex Legends players can encounter problems with Battle Pass leveling, item unlocks and other errors after unlinking. Treat those game-specific warnings as an additional reason to recover the original EA Account whenever possible.

In practical terms, unlink only when changing the EA Account is more important than retaining the original account’s access and when EA’s control is available. A different login alone is not a sufficient reason to give up progress.
What to do when Unlink is missing or blocked
Recover the original EA Account first
- Use EA’s password-reset and account-recovery flow for the email address you believe owns the Xbox connection.
- Search older EA emails for security codes, purchase receipts or account notices that identify the correct address.
- After regaining access, open Connected Accounts and confirm the Xbox entry.
- Continue using that account if preserving progress and purchases matters more than changing the login.
EA’s lost-progress guidance says it cannot move progress between EA Accounts. Recovery therefore addresses the access problem without deliberately abandoning the account that contains the history.

Sign out of EA services on the web, then sign in to each EA Account you may have used and inspect Connected Accounts. Do not link a second account from inside the game until you know which account currently owns the Xbox connection. If the platform was linked recently, the one-year rule can explain why a change is unavailable.
If verification codes do not arrive
- Confirm the mailbox and spam or junk folders for the exact EA Account email.
- Check that the message is not being filtered by a work, school or family-mail policy.
- Use account recovery if you no longer control that mailbox.
- Avoid repeatedly requesting codes; wait for the newest code and enter it before requesting another.
If the account is suspended or banned
An enforcement restriction must be handled through EA’s support and appeal channels. The unlink control will not provide a way around a suspension or ban.
If Xbox itself is the problem
When the Xbox profile, subscription or console sign-in is failing independently of EA, follow Xbox support’s account troubleshooting. EA’s unlinking guidance distinguishes platform-side problems from EA Account eligibility, so changing the EA connection may not fix an Xbox authentication problem.

Common situations and the correct response
You bought an Xbox used by another family member
Find out which EA Account is attached before adding your own. If the former owner’s account is still connected, unlinking can strand that account’s content and will not transfer it to yours. The former owner should recover and manage their EA Account, while you should use your own Xbox profile and an eligible EA Account.

Changing an EA Account email is different from unlinking the Xbox platform. If you still control the same EA Account, update its security details and keep the existing connection instead of creating a replacement account.
You have multiple Xbox profiles
Check each profile separately. A connection belongs to the specific platform identity shown in Connected Accounts; signing into a different Xbox profile does not give it access to another profile’s EA progress.
You only want to change the console
Moving from one Xbox console to another while using the same Xbox account normally does not require unlinking. Sign into the same Xbox profile on the new console and launch the EA game. Unlink only when you intend to change the EA Account associated with the platform identity.
You share an Xbox subscription
Subscription sharing does not make every sub-account eligible for EA online play. If a child or limited profile cannot connect, use the primary account that satisfies EA’s requirements rather than repeatedly attempting the same link.

- Can you sign in to the EA Account currently connected?
- Have you checked Connected Accounts instead of guessing which account is attached?
- Is the platform connection at least one year old?
- Have you considered the rolling limit of up to three switches in a year?
- Is the account free of suspension, ban or disablement?
