How to limit what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can do as AI agents

To limit an AI agent, control four separate boundaries: what it can access, what its tools can change, which actions require your approval, and where its code or browser session runs. Start with least privilege—connect only the data and apps required for one task, choose read-only tools when possible, and require a human confirmation before anything is sent, published, deleted, purchased, submitted, or changed.

Those controls are not interchangeable. An approval prompt does not remove an app’s underlying access, and a sandbox does not make an over-permissioned account safe. The practical guide below applies the same framework to ChatGPT and Gemini, then explains what can—and cannot—be stated about Claude’s current controls.

The four boundaries that determine an agent’s power

An “agent” is a model that can use tools, retrieve information, operate a browser, run code, or take actions outside a chat response. Its effective power is the combination of four boundaries:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Boundary What to limit Examples of a safe default
Access scope Apps, files, websites, accounts, credentials and data sources the agent can reach. Connect one project folder or calendar instead of an entire drive; use a service account rather than a personal administrator account.
Action scope Whether a tool can only read, or can create, edit, delete, send, purchase or submit. Use read-only search and document tools first; enable write actions only for a named task.
Approval scope Which operations pause for a person to inspect and approve them. Require confirmation before external communication, publication, deletion, financial activity, account changes and sensitive-data updates.
Execution boundary Where code and browser automation run, and their filesystem, network and credential limits. Use an isolated container or virtual machine, a temporary workspace and an outbound network allowlist.

Apply all four. Read-only access can still expose confidential information; an approval gate is weak if the approver cannot see the exact data and destination; and a sandbox is ineffective if it contains unrestricted credentials.

A least-privilege setup you can use with any agent

  1. Define one concrete task. Write the desired result, the permitted data sources and the actions that are explicitly out of scope. “Summarize the invoices in this folder” is safer than “handle accounting.”
  2. List the minimum data sources. Name the exact mailbox, folder, repository, site or application needed. Disconnect unrelated apps and accounts before starting.
  3. Choose read-only tools first. If a connector offers separate read and write capabilities, begin with read-only. Add a write capability only after you know the output and destination.
  4. Set approval points. Make the agent pause before sending a message, editing a record, deleting a file, submitting a form, creating an account, changing permissions, making a purchase or handling sensitive financial or health information.
  5. Constrain the runtime. For code or browser agents, use an isolated environment, temporary credentials, a restricted filesystem and an explicit network allowlist. Do not mount your whole home directory or expose production secrets.
  6. Inspect the proposed action. Before approving, check the exact text, files, recipients, URLs, amounts and changed fields. Stop if an instruction came from an untrusted email, web page or document and asks for secrets or a broader task.
  7. Revoke what you no longer need. Disconnect an app or expire a token when the job ends. Review permissions regularly, and have a workspace administrator disable a connector that should no longer be available.

This process follows Google’s guidance to use minimum-required permissions and trusted tools, and OpenAI’s advice to enable only necessary apps and review permissions. Google Cloud also states that customers are responsible for provisioning appropriate agent permissions, including available identity-and-access roles: Google Cloud Agent AI Use Guidelines.

How to limit ChatGPT agent actions

Separate connected-app access from approval prompts

ChatGPT’s connected-app controls govern when the product asks before using access that the connected app already granted. A permission choice can change confirmation behavior, but it does not itself grant a connector new access or remove access that already exists. To remove access, disconnect the app or ask a workspace administrator to disable it. The distinction is documented in OpenAI’s connected-app guidance.

For a new task, open ChatGPT’s connected-app management controls, disable unrelated connectors, and verify the account or workspace identity associated with each remaining connector. If a connector offers read-only and write operations, leave writes off until they are necessary. Recheck the scope after a workspace administrator changes a connector, because the user’s prompt cannot override an administrator’s access policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use confirmations for consequential operations

ChatGPT agent can pause for confirmation and describes additional confirmation requirements for high-impact actions. Treat a prompt as a review checkpoint, not as a substitute for least privilege. Read the proposed operation and the information that will be shared before selecting the confirmation control. If the action is broader than your task statement, decline it and narrow the task.

OpenAI’s current agent documentation also describes refusal patterns and monitoring for prompt injection. Product availability and controls can change, so check the live ChatGPT agent help page for the plan and feature behavior in your account.

Constrain Workspace Agents

For business and enterprise deployments, ChatGPT Workspace Agents documentation describes read-only app actions, confirmations for write actions and constraints on connector actions. Administrators should expose only the connectors needed by a team, keep default actions read-only, and require confirmation for writes. Pay attention to connection ownership: a personal connection can expose the builder’s account access to people who use the agent. Use a shared, purpose-limited connection or an administrator-managed identity instead of a personal account with broad privileges.

Reduce prompt-injection exposure

External content can contain instructions aimed at the agent rather than at you. An email, web page or document might tell the agent to reveal a secret, ignore your task or approve a transaction. OpenAI advises using specific tasks instead of giving an agent wide latitude: “It’s safer to ask your agent to do specific things, and not to give it wide latitude to potentially follow harmful instructions from elsewhere like emails.” Read the full guidance in Understanding prompt injections.

When an agent encounters suspicious instructions, stop the run, remove the untrusted source from the task and inspect any credentials or sessions it could have reached. For websites that require close supervision, use the product’s watch-mode or equivalent user-present controls when offered; do not treat unattended browsing as safe merely because the site opened successfully.

A practical ChatGPT run sequence

  1. Write the task in one sentence and name the permitted connector, folder or site.
  2. Turn off every unrelated connected app and confirm the remaining account identity.
  3. Choose read-only actions for discovery and drafting.
  4. Run the agent to produce a preview, draft or proposed change rather than an immediate external action.
  5. Inspect recipients, links, attachments, changed fields and destinations.
  6. Approve one consequential action at a time; decline and revise any request that exceeds the task.
  7. Disconnect the connector or revoke temporary credentials when the work is complete.

How to limit Gemini agents

Gemini in Chrome: treat confirmation categories as hard stops

Gemini in Chrome’s auto-browse help says it seeks confirmation before actions such as sending communications, modifying data, submitting forms, scheduling events and accessing sensitive financial or health sites. It also asks permission before using Google Password Manager assistance for sign-in. Keep those confirmations enabled and review the exact page, account and fields before proceeding. Details and labels can change; consult Google’s Gemini in Chrome auto-browse help for the current behavior.

Do not give a browser agent a general instruction such as “take care of my inbox.” Specify the messages or labels it may read, the recipients it may contact and the actions it must not perform. If a page displays instructions that conflict with your task, treat them as untrusted content and stop.

Gemini API computer use: implement the safety response yourself

The Gemini computer-use API documentation groups risky operations into safety categories including financial transactions, sensitive-data modification, communication tools, account creation and other data modification. Your client is expected to implement user confirmation when the model returns a safety response, and Google recommends running the agent in a sandboxed virtual machine or container. Read the category definitions and integration requirements in Gemini computer use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the confirmation dialog specific: show the operation, target application, account, data to be transmitted and any monetary amount. Do not allow a generic “continue” button to approve several unrelated actions. If the model requests an operation outside your allowlist, terminate the run rather than asking it to justify the request.

Managed Gemini API agents: sandbox the process and narrow the network

Google’s managed agent overview describes an OS-level sandbox, but says outbound network access is unrestricted by default and can be narrowed with an allowlist. Configure the allowlist to include only the domains and services required for the task; unrestricted egress lets a compromised process transmit data to an arbitrary destination. Use short-lived, scoped credentials and keep secrets outside the agent’s readable filesystem.

The managed-agent feature is labeled Public Preview in the Gemini API agents overview. Preview status means interfaces, limits and availability may change. Review actions and outputs before relying on the agent in a sensitive workflow, and recheck the page before deploying a production integration.

AI Studio agents: trusted tools and human review

Google’s AI Studio agent guidance recommends least-privilege credentials, trusted tools, read-only modes where possible and human review. Give each tool the smallest permission set it can use, keep development credentials separate from production, and log tool calls with the user, time, target and result. The current recommendations are in Agents in AI Studio playground.

A practical Gemini run sequence

  1. Choose whether the work belongs in Chrome, an API computer-use client, a managed agent or AI Studio; these are different products with different controls.
  2. Define the permitted sites, files, tools and account identity.
  3. Enable read-only retrieval first and set a network allowlist for API or managed-agent runs.
  4. Implement a confirmation UI for each safety category that can change data, communicate externally, create accounts or move money.
  5. Show the exact operation and destination to the user before approval.
  6. Review logs and outputs, then revoke temporary access and credentials.

What can be said about Claude’s agent controls

Current authoritative documentation establishing Claude’s consumer, developer, Claude Code and computer-use permission settings was not available for this article. Do not transfer ChatGPT or Gemini menu names, confirmation behavior or sandbox assumptions to Claude.

Instead, identify the Claude product you are using and verify its current official documentation for four items: connected data and account scope, read versus write tools, approval or human-in-the-loop behavior, and filesystem or network isolation. Apply the same least-privilege checklist while you verify those details. If the documentation does not state that an action is blocked or requires confirmation, assume it is not guaranteed to be blocked and enforce the boundary in your identity provider, tool wrapper, container or network policy.

Designing approval gates that actually protect you

An approval gate is useful only when it appears before the irreversible or externally visible step and gives the reviewer enough context to make a decision. Use this baseline policy:

Operation Recommended default What the reviewer should see
Read a permitted source Allow without repeated prompts when the source is in scope. Source identity and requested fields.
Create a draft or local file Allow in a temporary workspace. Path, file type and generated content.
Send a message or publish Always require confirmation. Complete content, recipients, attachments, channel and publication audience.
Edit or delete data Require confirmation; require a second reviewer for critical records. Before-and-after values, record identifiers and rollback option.
Submit a form or schedule an event Require confirmation. All fields, destination, date, time zone and account.
Purchase, transfer funds or change billing Block by default unless explicitly enabled for a narrowly defined workflow. Vendor, amount, currency, payment instrument and final total.
Use passwords, tokens or sensitive health or financial data Require explicit permission and the smallest possible scope; avoid exposing secrets to model context. Which credential or data category is used, why, and where it will go.

Separate approval from authorization. The agent should not be able to create a new credential, elevate its own role or alter the policy that governs its approval dialog.

Sandboxing code and browser agents

Filesystem controls

Give the process a temporary working directory containing only the files required for the task. Mount sensitive directories read-only or not at all. Prevent access to SSH keys, browser profiles, password stores, cloud metadata endpoints and production configuration files. Delete the workspace after collecting the reviewed output.

Network controls

Deny outbound traffic by default for code execution. Add an allowlist for required package registries, APIs or websites, and block internal address ranges unless the workflow genuinely needs them. Google’s managed Gemini guidance is a useful warning: an OS-level sandbox does not automatically mean restricted outbound networking.

Credentials and identity

Use short-lived tokens scoped to one resource and operation. Separate development, test and production identities. Never place a long-lived administrator token in a prompt, environment variable visible to untrusted code or browser profile. Rotate or revoke credentials after a run that encountered suspicious instructions.

Logging and review

Record tool calls, arguments, approvals, identities, timestamps, destinations and results without logging secret values. Keep enough information to reconstruct what happened, and alert on unusual destinations, repeated denials, permission changes or attempts to access out-of-scope files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prompt-injection defenses and supervision

Prompt injection is a control problem, not merely a wording problem. Treat every retrieved document, web page, email and tool result as data that may contain hostile instructions. Keep the user’s task and policy outside the untrusted content, and have the tool layer enforce permissions independently of the model’s interpretation.

  • Use narrow task statements with explicit allowed sources and prohibited actions.
  • Do not ask an agent to “handle everything” across an inbox, drive or browser session.
  • Require confirmation when untrusted content proposes sending data, changing permissions, downloading software or revealing secrets.
  • Present the proposed tool call and resulting data to a person before an irreversible action.
  • Stop the run when instructions conflict, the destination changes unexpectedly or the agent asks for broader access.
  • Review critical outputs; human review reduces risk but cannot guarantee correct interpretation or stop every attack.

Comparison: what is established for each platform

Control axis ChatGPT Gemini Claude
Access scope Connected-app permissions can be reviewed; disconnecting an app or administrator disablement removes access. Use minimum-required permissions, trusted tools and scoped credentials; Chrome and API products have different boundaries. Current authoritative settings were not established here; verify the specific Claude product.
Action scope Workspace guidance describes read-only actions and constrained write actions. Computer-use safety categories cover communications, data changes, account creation and financial operations. Do not assume read/write behavior from another platform.
Approval behavior Agent may pause for confirmation, including for high-impact actions; confirmation does not grant access. Chrome seeks confirmation for several sensitive actions; API clients must implement confirmation for safety responses. Verify official documentation before relying on a prompt or automatic block.
Execution boundary Use the product’s available supervision and connector controls; do not infer a sandbox from a chat interface. Managed agents use an OS-level sandbox, with outbound network unrestricted by default unless narrowed; sandbox API computer-use clients. Verify filesystem, browser and network isolation for the product and deployment you use.

When an agent is still too powerful: troubleshooting

It can see data it should not see

Disconnect unrelated apps, inspect the connected account’s own permissions and replace broad credentials with a scoped identity. In a workspace, ask an administrator to disable the connector; changing a confirmation preference alone will not remove access.

It performs writes without asking

Disable the write tool or connector, move the workflow to a read-only mode and add an approval gate in the tool wrapper. Do not rely on a prompt asking the model to remember to ask; enforce the requirement outside the model.

It asks for approval too late

Place the gate before the tool call that sends, deletes, submits or changes data. The preview must include the final payload and destination, not only a natural-language summary.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It follows instructions from a document or web page

Stop the run, isolate the affected session and inspect what the agent read or transmitted. Remove the untrusted source, rotate any exposed credential and rerun with a narrower allowlist. Treat the incident as a prompt-injection attempt even if no damage is immediately visible.

Sandboxing does not stop data exfiltration

Check outbound network policy first. An isolated process with unrestricted egress can still send permitted files to an unauthorized destination. Add an allowlist, block direct internet access where possible and review logs for unexpected domains.

The product’s controls or labels changed

Recheck the vendor’s current documentation before updating a policy or training users. Preview features, plan availability and confirmation behavior are not permanent; document the date and product edition your organization approved.

A compact pre-run checklist

  • Task, permitted sources and prohibited actions are written down.
  • Unneeded apps, accounts and browser sessions are disconnected.
  • Read-only tools are selected where they can complete the job.
  • Write, send, delete, purchase, submission and account-change actions have approval gates.
  • Filesystem, network and credential scopes are restricted in the execution environment.
  • The reviewer can see the exact data, destination and result before approving.
  • Logs are enabled without storing secret values.
  • Temporary access will be revoked when the task ends.
  • The platform’s current documentation has been checked for the exact product and edition.
