The safest way to use an AI shopping agent is to give it the narrowest authority that can complete the task: define exactly what it may buy, set a maximum that includes fees and price changes, restrict merchants or payment credentials when the service supports those controls, require approval for anything consequential, and make the permission expire quickly. Never assume that a natural-language instruction is technically enforced. Confirm which limits your agent, merchant and payment provider actually implement before allowing a charge.
What it means to limit an AI shopping agent
An AI shopping agent can search products, compare offers, fill a cart and, in some implementations, complete checkout. Limiting it means controlling the authority between your instruction and the payment authorization. You are not merely telling the agent what you prefer; you are defining what it is allowed to do and what must come back to you for a decision.

Two technical terms are useful. A mandate is the recorded permission for a task together with its limits. A constraint is a rule a proposed checkout must satisfy, such as a maximum total or an approved merchant. The terms come from emerging authorization designs, not from a universal feature set that every shopping service already provides.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) describes current consumer-facing agentic applications as generally narrow. Early shopping agents may search, compare and initiate simple actions while asking for user confirmation. The CMA also discusses a possible future in which personal assistants act across services “within clear boundaries.” Treat that as a design goal, not proof that a particular agent can enforce every boundary you state in a chat.

First check what your particular service can enforce
Before granting purchase authority, open the agent’s settings, its payment settings and the merchant’s checkout terms. Look for controls that are presented as enforceable settings rather than suggestions in a prompt. If a control is absent, assume the agent cannot guarantee it.
| Control to look for | Question to answer | Safe default when the answer is unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Per-purchase ceiling | Can a single checkout above a stated amount be blocked before charging? | Require your approval for every checkout. |
| Cumulative budget | Can the service track a total allowance across several purchases or a task? | Use one purchase at a time and review the running total yourself. |
| Merchant or category restriction | Can the permission name allowed merchants, product categories or exclusions? | Do not authorize autonomous buying; let the agent prepare a cart. |
| Approval gate | Does the payment remain pending until you explicitly approve the exact checkout? | Keep direct approval enabled. |
| Expiry | Does the authorization end automatically at a specified time? | Grant access only for the shortest task window and revoke it afterward. |
| Revocation | Can you cancel an active permission immediately, and where is that control? | Do not enable autonomy until you have found the revocation path. |
| Notifications and receipts | Will you receive a charge alert and be able to retrieve the mandate, checkout and receipt? | Use a payment method with reliable alerts and save each confirmation. |
| Dispute and refund process | Who handles an incorrect item, unauthorized charge or failed delivery? | Confirm the merchant and payment provider’s support route before purchase. |
None of these capabilities should be inferred from an agent’s ability to identify itself. A payment-network protocol can help a merchant recognize a trusted agent, but identity is not the same as your approval of a particular item or amount.
Define the task before you grant permission
Write the assignment as a small, testable specification. Include what is allowed and what is out of scope. Avoid a broad instruction such as “buy whatever I need for the kitchen.” A bounded version might be “find one stainless-steel kettle for less than £60 from an approved retailer, with delivery by Friday; do not buy accessories, extended warranties or substitutes without asking.”
State the product and category
- Name the exact product, model family or category.
- Specify quantity, size, colour, compatibility and other must-have attributes.
- List excluded categories, add-ons, subscriptions, warranties, refurbished goods or used items.
- Say whether substitutions are forbidden or require a new approval.
Describe the outcome, not just the search
Tell the agent whether it may only collect options, add an item to a cart, or actually submit payment. “Find and show me three options” has no purchase authority. “Purchase one option after I approve the final checkout” creates a clear approval point. If the service has a separate permission for browsing and buying, keep buying disabled until the final step.
Use a written exclusion list
Natural-language models can interpret a positive request broadly. An exclusion list makes edge cases visible: no recurring deliveries, no marketplace sellers, no digital goods, no gift cards, no adult products, no international shipping, and no replacement with a different brand or specification unless you approve it. Whether the system can technically enforce those exclusions is a separate question; ask the provider how it evaluates them.
Set a budget that survives real checkout changes
A headline product price is not a safe spending limit. The amount that can be charged may include tax, delivery, service fees, tips, deposits, currency conversion and substitutions. Price can also change between the agent’s search and the merchant’s final authorization.
Calculate the maximum total
Set a ceiling for the complete amount, not just the item. For example, if an item is advertised at £45 and you could incur £8 delivery, £9 tax and a possible £3 service fee, a £50 limit is not meaningful. Either set a ceiling high enough to cover every permitted component or prohibit the component that you cannot predict.

- Decide whether tax is included in the ceiling.
- Set a separate rule for delivery: free delivery only, or a stated maximum.
- Prohibit tips or require a new approval if the service adds them.
- Specify how currency conversion and foreign transaction fees are treated.
- Decide whether substitutions may use the unused portion of the budget.
- For recurring orders, set both a per-order limit and an end date; an indefinite subscription is not a bounded task.
Authorization frameworks can represent constraints, but the reviewed specifications do not establish a universal consumer-facing form for entering these values. If the interface offers only a free-text field, ask the provider whether the amount is actually checked before payment or merely passed to the model as context.

Choose direct approval or bounded autonomy
Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) describes two distinct patterns.
Direct mode: you approve the closed checkout
In direct mode, you see the final cart and explicitly approve the checkout and payment. This is the safest choice for expensive, unusual, regulated, hard-to-return or personal purchases. Your approval should occur after the merchant, items, quantities, delivery address, total and payment credential are visible.
Autonomous mode: you pre-approve constraints
In autonomous mode, you approve constraints in advance and the agent assembles and approves a checkout within them. This can be useful for a tightly defined replenishment task, but it moves the decision earlier. The agent may choose among products or merchants without showing each one first. Use it only when the allowed choices are genuinely interchangeable and the constraints can be evaluated by the service.
AP2 recommends setting a mandate’s expiry to the shortest period that still allows the assigned task to finish. A permission for “this afternoon’s grocery order” should not remain active for a month. If the interface offers no expiry, use direct approval instead of autonomous payment.
Restrict merchants, categories and payment credentials
Merchant boundaries
Some systems may allow an approved-merchant list or a prohibition on marketplace sellers. If that setting exists, use it. Otherwise, state the merchant requirement in the task and treat it as a preference rather than a guarantee. Check the seller shown at the final checkout; a familiar storefront may route an order to a different marketplace seller.
Category boundaries
Category labels are not always precise. “Office supplies” can include furniture, electronics or recurring software, and “food” can include alcohol or supplements. Define the specific products and exclusions, then review the actual line items. Do not rely on a category filter that the provider has not documented.
Payment boundaries
A separate card, token or virtual card can reduce exposure only if the issuer or payment provider attaches real limits to it. A different card number by itself does not impose a budget. Verify whether the credential can be limited by amount, merchant, transaction count, time or recurring use, and whether those limits are enforced before authorization. No reviewed source confirms a particular consumer product with all of these controls.

Use a precise approval checklist at checkout
When an agent asks for approval, do not approve a summary that hides material details. Verify the following in the merchant’s final checkout screen:
- Items: model, size, quantity, condition and seller.
- Total: item price, tax, delivery, fees, tips, discounts and currency.
- Delivery: address, delivery date, shipping method and any signature requirement.
- Terms: subscription, renewal, cancellation, return window and restocking fee.
- Payment: the account or card to be charged and the last four digits, if shown.
- Authorization: whether this approval covers one checkout or future purchases as well.
If any field is missing, ask the agent to stop and show the merchant’s complete checkout. A statement such as “the total may change” is a reason to withhold approval, not a substitute for a limit.
Make authorization short-lived and revocable
Before enabling autonomy, locate the control that ends the permission. It may be in the agent’s settings, the merchant account, the payment provider or all three. Revoking one layer may not cancel an authorization stored by another.
Recommended Free Tools
- Set an end time that is earlier than the latest time the task could reasonably finish.
- Record where the permission is displayed and what it is called.
- After the task completes, revoke the permission even if it has not expired.
- Cancel any saved recurring order separately; ending an agent mandate may not cancel a merchant subscription.
- If a device is lost or an account is compromised, disable the payment credential and contact the provider immediately.
Test revocation with a low-risk task if the service is new to you. A control that changes a setting but leaves an active checkout pending is not immediate cancellation; check the provider’s explanation of its timing.
Keep an evidence trail
Save the permission, the final checkout, the approval event, the order confirmation and the receipt. Include timestamps, order numbers and the payment method identifier shown by the merchant. Screenshots can help when a service does not provide an export.
AP2 describes bringing checkout and payment mandates together with receipts to create a transaction picture for a dispute. It does not define how long a service must retain those records, how you retrieve them or how a dispute is resolved. Ask each provider what it stores and for how long. Records can clarify what was authorized, but they do not guarantee a refund or a successful dispute.
Monitor the agent while it works
For an autonomous task, enable real-time transaction alerts and check the task’s activity log. Stop the task if you see repeated searches outside scope, attempts to add excluded products, unexplained price changes or a request for broader permissions.

- Set alerts for every authorization, not only completed charges.
- Check for duplicate orders when the agent retries after a timeout.
- Watch for substitutions and split shipments that can create multiple charges.
- After delivery, compare the receipt with the approved checkout and report discrepancies promptly.
UK CMA business guidance recommends monitoring agent behaviour and maintaining human oversight to catch incorrect decisions. For consumers, the practical lesson is to keep a person in the loop whenever the cost, consequences or ambiguity are significant.

Common failure modes and what to do
The agent exceeds the stated budget
Do not assume the cap failed because of a small tax difference. Check whether the service defines the cap before or after tax, delivery and tips. Cancel the order if possible, revoke the mandate, and ask the payment provider how the authorization was evaluated.
The agent buys from an unapproved seller
Save the product page and final seller information. If an allowlist was advertised, ask the provider why the seller passed it. If no allowlist existed, treat the natural-language instruction as non-enforced and switch to direct approval.
A recurring order continues after the task ends
Cancel the subscription with the merchant and separately revoke the agent’s permission. Check the next billing date and request written confirmation of cancellation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The agent requests broader access
Stop and inspect the reason. A request to add a new payment method, expand merchant access or increase the ceiling is a new authorization decision. Do not approve it merely because the original task is unfinished.
You cannot retrieve the authorization record
Ask the agent, merchant and payment provider independently for the mandate, checkout and receipt. If no party can provide the record, avoid autonomous purchases until the retention and support process is clear.
Understand responsibility and jurisdiction
The CMA’s guidance for businesses says consumer law applies whether a customer interacts with a human or an AI agent, and that a business remains responsible for what its agent does, including an agent supplied by a third party. That guidance is directed at businesses in the United Kingdom. It does not provide a complete statement of a consumer’s rights or liability in every country, and it is not a substitute for local legal advice.
Keep the merchant’s terms, the payment provider’s terms and your own approval records. If a charge is wrong, contact the merchant first when appropriate, then follow the payment provider’s dispute process and any applicable statutory deadlines.

Best Value
| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Per-purchase and cumulative limits | Are both available, and are tax, delivery and fees included? | Prevents a low item price from hiding a high final charge. |
| Merchant and category restrictions | Can an allowlist or exclusion be enforced before authorization? | Separates a technical boundary from a prompt preference. |
| Approval timing | Must you approve the exact closed checkout before the charge? | Keeps unusual or expensive decisions with you. |
| Expiry and revocation | Can access expire automatically and be cancelled immediately? | Limits the damage from forgotten or compromised permissions. |
| Notifications and receipts | Are authorization, charge and delivery events recorded and retrievable? | Provides evidence and helps detect errors quickly. |
| Disputes and refunds | Which party handles an incorrect or unauthorized transaction? | Clarifies where to seek help and what records are required. |
| Data and credential control | Who stores the payment credential and agent activity? | Shows the privacy and account-recovery consequences of using the service. |
If a provider cannot answer an axis, write “not stated” in your comparison and choose direct approval. Do not fill an undocumented capability with an assumption.
Practical permission patterns
Low-risk replenishment
For a standard consumable, you might allow one item from an approved merchant, no substitutions, a complete-order ceiling that includes delivery and tax, and an expiry at the end of the day. Review the first order manually and keep alerts enabled.
Expensive or hard-to-return purchase
Let the agent research and prepare a cart, but require direct approval of the exact model, seller, total, delivery terms and return policy. Do not use autonomous checkout merely because the product matches a category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGift or personal purchase
Keep the agent in search mode until you have checked the recipient, shipping address, delivery date and privacy implications. A wrong address or visible order history can be more damaging than the price of the item.
Recurring household order
Set a per-order maximum and a final date, prohibit substitutions unless approved, and confirm how to cancel both the merchant subscription and the agent’s mandate. Recheck the order after any price or delivery change.
What emerging protocols do—and do not—guarantee
AP2 illustrates how a system can separate a user-approved mandate from the checkout it authorizes and can require the merchant to verify that the checkout satisfies the mandate’s constraints. That is a useful model for evaluating implementations. It is not consumer-protection certification, and it does not show that the agent you use, the merchant you choose or your payment provider supports the protocol.
Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol announcement describes cryptographic signatures and fields for agent intent, consumer recognition and payment information so merchants can recognize trusted agents. Visa also reports that 55% familiarity with AI assistants among United States adults in its 2025 survey of adults aged 18–65 who shop online monthly and have a debit or credit card. The survey used a 15-minute online questionnaire through the AYTM agile consumer insights platform, with samples of 1,600 respondents in the United States, 1,600 in Australia and 500 in New Zealand. Those figures describe that survey population; they are not a universal adoption rate and do not demonstrate that spending caps are available.
Identity signals, authorization mandates and merchant dispute procedures are separate layers. A recognizable agent can still be authorized too broadly, and a recorded mandate can still leave you dependent on the merchant’s refund and support process.
A final pre-authorization checklist
- The task, product category and exclusions are written in specific terms.
- The maximum covers item price, tax, delivery, fees, tips and permitted substitutions.
- The merchant, seller and payment credential are acceptable.
- Direct approval is enabled for expensive, unusual, recurring or hard-to-return purchases.
- Autonomous permissions, if used, have the shortest practical expiry.
- You know exactly where to revoke the permission and cancel any recurring order.
- Transaction alerts are active.
- You can retrieve the mandate, checkout, confirmation and receipt.
- You understand which merchant or payment provider handles a dispute.
If any item on this checklist is unknown, let the agent search and prepare options but do not let it submit payment. The practical boundary is not the instruction you hope the model follows; it is the limit that the agent, merchant and payment system can demonstrate and enforce.
