How to Limit the Personal Data a Robotaxi Collects During a Ride

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

There is no universal “private ride” switch for a robotaxi. The practical way to reduce collection is to identify the vehicle operator, read that operator’s rider privacy notice for your market, restrict optional phone location access, enter pickup details manually when the app permits it, disable optional cabin analytics or data sharing, avoid connected entertainment accounts, and use the operator’s access, deletion, and opt-out tools after the trip. Some data—such as pickup and drop-off locations, route information, vehicle position, and safety-related sensor data—may still be processed because the ride cannot be requested or operated without it.

Controls differ by operator, country or state, app, account type, and service version. The examples below show what particular providers currently disclose; they are not a promise that every driverless-taxi service offers the same settings.

What personal information does a driverless taxi collect?

A robotaxi normally handles several layers of information at once. Separating them helps you see which controls can actually reduce exposure.

Ride-request and account data

The booking system may receive your name, contact details, payment information, account identifiers, saved places, preferred trip locations, ride history, support conversations, and details about a corporate, family, or linked account. A company that requests or pays for a trip can receive some ride details under the operator’s terms.

Location and route data

To dispatch a vehicle, the service generally needs a pickup point, destination, and the vehicle’s position. An app may also request precise location from your phone to set or refine the pickup point. The trip can generate route, timing, stop, and drop-off records even when you deny the app access to your phone’s location.

Vehicle sensors and cabin systems

Driverless vehicles use exterior cameras, microphones, lidar, radar, and other sensors for navigation and safety. Some operators also record or analyze the cabin. Video, audio, sound events, images, and safety-event clips can become personal information when they are linked to a rider, an account, or a recognizable person.

Device, network, and usage information

The app and vehicle can log device identifiers, network information, diagnostics, interaction with controls, and electronic-network activity. A privacy notice may also list inferences or health information in narrowly defined situations, such as a medical event or injury report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Information shared with other parties

Service providers, payment processors, support vendors, authorities, a corporate travel payer, a linked account holder, or an optional media provider may receive different portions of the record. The operator’s policy and the other party’s own policy determine what happens next.

Why some collection cannot be switched off

Turning off your phone’s precise-location permission does not erase the trip’s operational record. The operator still needs to know where to send the vehicle, where the vehicle is, and where to end the ride. It may retain route and trip history for billing, customer support, safety investigations, fraud prevention, disputes, system security, or legal obligations.

Vehicle sensors are also part of the driving system rather than an optional app feature. Blocking a camera, covering a sensor, or interfering with a microphone can reduce safety and may violate the service’s rules. Use documented software controls instead.

Retention is not necessarily permanent, but deletion is not absolute. An operator may keep information for a specified period or while an account remains active, and may preserve records needed for safety, legal compliance, fraud prevention, accounting, or a pending dispute. A deletion request removes eligible data; it does not require a provider to destroy every record immediately.

How to reduce data collection before booking

1. Find the actual vehicle operator

A booking platform and the company operating the autonomous vehicle may be different entities. Look at the trip confirmation, vehicle markings, help page, and privacy link to identify who controls the ride data. Read the operator’s rider-specific notice for your city or country, not only a general corporate policy. Check the “last updated” date because controls and sensor practices can change.

2. Audit phone permissions

On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select the ride app, and choose the least permissive option that still lets you set a pickup. On Android, open Settings > Location > App location permissions, select the app, and disable precise location or set a limited permission where available. Labels vary by operating-system version.

Do not assume that “while using the app” means no location data is processed during the ride. The setting governs the phone’s location feed; it does not govern the vehicle’s own positioning or the pickup and route records needed to fulfill the trip.

3. Enter pickup and destination manually when offered

Manual entry can prevent the app from needing your phone’s continuous precise location. Confirm the address on the map, add a landmark or gate number in the notes field, and recheck the pin before requesting the vehicle. A manual-entry option does not stop the operator from processing the pickup, destination, route, or vehicle location once the ride is underway.

4. Review accounts that can see the trip

Check whether the ride is connected to an employer, school, family organizer, teen account, travel-management system, or another booking service. A payer or account administrator may receive receipts, pickup and drop-off details, timestamps, or other trip information. Disconnect integrations you do not need and read the linked service’s privacy terms.

5. Separate essential features from optional ones

Look for individual switches for:

  • precise phone location and live pickup sharing;
  • cabin-camera analytics;
  • sound or voice detection;
  • service-improvement or product-analytics sharing;
  • marketing and promotional messages; and
  • connected entertainment, music, or media accounts.

One switch rarely controls all of these categories. Record the setting you changed and the date, especially if you share the account with other riders.

How do I stop a robotaxi from collecting my data during the ride?

Use the in-app or in-car privacy controls

After boarding, open the ride’s privacy, safety, or settings panel. If the operator offers an opt-in control for cabin analytics, sound detection, or service-improvement sharing, leave it off. Recheck the setting after an app update or when a different vehicle model is dispatched.

Do not add optional connected services

Signing in to a music, video, messaging, or other third-party service can create a second data relationship. The operator may pass interaction information to that service, while the service’s own policy governs its handling. Use the vehicle without signing in if you do not need the feature.

Limit live location sharing where the app supports it

Some ride-hailing apps let you pause or disable live pickup-location sharing. That can reduce what the app displays or sends to a driver-support workflow, but it does not remove the pickup address or the vehicle’s operational location records.

Keep safety and support channels available

A privacy setting should not disable emergency assistance, required safety recording, or a support call. If the service says audio is captured during an active support call, ending the call ends that particular trigger; it does not imply that no other sensor data exists.

Does a robotaxi record inside the car?

Sometimes. Interior recording is operator-specific, and even one operator can use different triggers for video and audio.

Waymo’s disclosed practice

Waymo’s Services Privacy Policy, updated September 30, 2026, says video is recorded inside vehicles during trips. It says audio is recorded during an active Rider Support call or when a rider actively enables the in-car microphones. The same policy describes exterior cameras and microphones, lidar, and radar used for vehicle operation. Its documented rider choices include adjusting precise mobile-device location collection, reviewing or editing account information, deleting an account, and opting out of promotional messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those statements describe Waymo’s policy, not every autonomous-taxi provider. The company’s August 24, 2026 statement says its cameras are intended for mapping, safe service operation, and technology improvement, and are not intended for surveillance or facial or other biometric identification. It also says the company does not sell personal information collected by vehicle cameras and sensors. These are the company’s stated practices, not an independent audit finding.

Tesla Robotaxi’s disclosed categories

Tesla’s Robotaxi notice separates ordinary vehicle data from optional cabin-camera and sound-detection analytics sharing. The optional analytics can be controlled in the Robotaxi app. The notice also says a rider can manually enter a pickup location. It describes vehicle data as ordinarily not associated with the rider’s Tesla account, encrypted so Tesla cannot decrypt it, or inaccessible unless a safety event, consent, or another legal basis applies. “Ordinarily” matters: safety-event clips and other lawful exceptions mean the data should not be treated as permanently anonymous or never transmitted.

What you cannot infer

The presence of a camera does not prove that a human is watching live. The absence of an audio setting does not prove that no audio can be captured during support or an emergency. Ask which sensor is active, what event triggers recording, whether the data is linked to your account, who can receive it, and how long it is retained.

Provider examples: what the current notices say

Provider or example Disclosed collection or control Important limitation
Waymo Account and billing details, preferred locations, trip history, pickup and drop-off locations, route details, and device location. Interior video during trips; audio during active Rider Support calls or when in-car microphones are actively enabled. Account review, editing, deletion, precise-device-location adjustment, and promotional-message opt-out are described. Device location is collected during a trip or when the app is used with location services enabled. Trip and account information may be retained for operational, safety, legal, fraud, dispute, or other stated purposes. A corporate requester or payer may receive ride details.
Tesla Robotaxi The app and Robotaxi process location data to arrange and display a ride. Manual pickup entry is described. Optional cabin-camera and sound-detection analytics sharing is controlled in the Robotaxi app. Vehicle data is described as ordinarily unassociated with the rider account or inaccessible under stated conditions, but safety events, consent, and other legal bases are exceptions.
Uber app location example Riders can use the app without turning on device location services, enter pickup and drop-off locations manually, and pause or disable live pickup-location sharing. This is an app-level ride-hailing example, not proof that every robotaxi service offers the same settings. Uber’s separate autonomous-road-data page concerns outward-facing development collection and should not be confused with data collected when a person requests or receives a ride.

What to do after the ride

Review the account record

Open the provider’s privacy dashboard or submit its privacy-request form. Ask to access, download, correct, or delete information where local law and the operator’s policy allow it. Review trip history, saved locations, payment records, support interactions, and linked-account permissions.

Use the right opt-out for the right purpose

A promotional-message unsubscribe is not the same as an opt-out from targeted advertising, sale or sharing, cabin analytics, or service-improvement processing. Select each applicable control separately. In California, the California Privacy Protection Agency describes rights to know, delete, and stop sale or sharing under the California Consumer Privacy Act, subject to legal exceptions.

Expect identity verification and exceptions

The provider may verify that you are the account holder before disclosing or deleting data. It may deny or narrow a request when retention is required for safety, fraud prevention, legal compliance, accounting, a dispute, or another permitted purpose. Keep the confirmation of your request and any stated completion date.

Check the payer’s records too

If an employer, organization, or another person paid for the ride, the operator’s deletion request may not erase the payer’s receipt or travel record. Review that organization’s privacy process separately.

A practical privacy checklist

  1. Identify the autonomous-vehicle operator, not just the app used to book.
  2. Open the operator’s rider privacy notice and note its market and update date.
  3. Enter pickup and destination manually if you do not need phone-based precise location.
  4. Set the ride app’s location permission to the least access that still works.
  5. Disable optional cabin analytics, sound detection, marketing, and service-improvement sharing.
  6. Do not sign in to optional entertainment or connected accounts.
  7. Check employer, family, teen, travel, and other linked-account access.
  8. After the ride, request access, correction, deletion, or eligible sale/sharing opt-outs.
  9. Read the response for retention exceptions and records held by a payer or partner.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

“I denied location, so the operator has no location data.”

Fix: distinguish phone permission from ride and vehicle location. Manual entry can reduce the phone feed; it cannot remove the pickup, destination, route, or vehicle-position record needed to operate the trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A camera cover will stop recording.”

Fix: do not cover or obstruct equipment. Use the documented cabin-analytics or recording control, and ask support what remains necessary for safety.

“Turning off marketing stops all secondary use.”

Fix: marketing preferences address promotional messages. Look separately for analytics, targeted advertising, sale or sharing, voice, cabin, and third-party-service settings.

“The booking app’s policy covers the vehicle.”

Fix: identify the operating company and read its rider notice. A booking platform, vehicle operator, corporate payer, and entertainment provider can each have different responsibilities.

“Deleting my account deletes every trip record immediately.”

Fix: read the retention explanation. Safety, legal, fraud, accounting, and dispute exceptions can require records to be kept after an account is closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare two robotaxi services

Use the same questions for each operator rather than relying on a broad “privacy-friendly” label:

  • Which fields are required to request and complete a ride?
  • Can pickup and destination be entered manually, and can precise phone location be denied?
  • Is cabin video or audio collected? What event starts it?
  • Are analytics, sound detection, or service-improvement sharing optional?
  • Are trip and sensor records linked to an account or identifiable rider?
  • How long are records retained, and what exceptions extend retention?
  • Can a corporate payer, linked account, platform, service provider, or authority receive trip details?
  • Which access, correction, deletion, targeted-advertising, sale, or sharing controls apply in your jurisdiction?

There is no published, directly relevant statistic establishing how much personal data robotaxis collect overall or how effective these controls are. Treat each provider’s notice and settings as the evidence for that service, not as a basis for a universal industry claim.

Bottom line for a lower-data ride

Use manual pickup entry and the least phone-location permission that still lets you book; turn off every optional cabin, sound, analytics, marketing, and connected-service feature you do not need; and submit privacy requests after the trip. Accept that the operator will still process core location, route, vehicle-sensor, and safety information, and verify the exact limits in the notice for the vehicle and market you are using.
