How to limit the data your car’s companion app collects

You can usually reduce a car app’s data collection, but there is no single “privacy off” switch. Review three places: your phone’s permissions, the automaker app and account, and the vehicle’s infotainment or privacy menus. Each setting can affect a different data type—such as precise location, driving behavior, diagnostics or app usage—and may disable remote features. Make changes one at a time, record what changed, and verify the consequences for your exact make, model year, country and connected-service enrollment.

Why the phone app is only part of the data flow

A companion app can display your vehicle’s status, locate it, unlock doors, start the engine, schedule charging or send maintenance alerts. To do that, information may pass through several layers:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The phone: The app may request location, Bluetooth or nearby-device access, notifications and other operating-system permissions.
  • The vehicle: Telematics modules, GPS, sensors and the infotainment system can generate location, diagnostic and driving information even when you are not actively using the app.
  • The automaker account: Your profile can connect the vehicle identification number, driver settings, subscriptions and consent choices.
  • The connected service: A manufacturer or service provider may process data to deliver remote commands, navigation, emergency assistance, diagnostics, personalization or analytics.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says connected cars can collect sensitive information, including location, and that app-enabled features can include remote unlocking. Turning off one phone permission therefore does not prove that the vehicle has stopped collecting or transmitting all data.

Start with a privacy inventory

Before changing controls, write down the features you actually use. This prevents an overbroad shutdown that removes a safety or convenience function you still need.

  • Remote lock, unlock or start
  • Vehicle-location display or parking location
  • Charging, fuel or range notifications
  • Maintenance and diagnostic alerts
  • Navigation destinations sent from the phone
  • Emergency response or crash assistance
  • Driving scores, trip history or insurance-related insights
  • Digital-key or Bluetooth proximity functions

For each feature, note whether it is essential, useful or expendable. Then check the current owner’s manual and privacy notice for your exact vehicle configuration. Automakers change labels and service behavior by model year, trim, country and subscription.

Step 1: Reduce the app’s phone permissions

Use the operating system’s app-permission page, not only the privacy controls inside the car app. Menu names differ by operating-system version, so search Settings for the app name or for “permissions.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Location

Choose the least-permissive option that supports your chosen feature. Depending on the phone, choices may include denying access, allowing access only while the app is in use, asking each time, or allowing background access. A location display, automatic trip logging or geofence alert may require background access; an app that only shows vehicle status may not.

If the phone offers “precise” versus “approximate” location, test approximate first. A remote command may still work while a parking-location map becomes less accurate. Do not assume this setting controls the vehicle’s own GPS; it controls the phone’s location signal.

Bluetooth and nearby devices

Review Bluetooth, local-network and nearby-device permissions where your operating system shows them. A digital key, automatic vehicle detection or in-car handoff can depend on these permissions. Revoking them may leave ordinary account functions working while breaking proximity features.

Notifications, contacts and other requests

Disable notifications you do not need, such as promotional or driving-insight alerts, while retaining security or emergency notices if desired. If the app requests contacts, photos, microphone or calendar access, deny any permission unrelated to a feature you use. Revisit the list after an app update because new capabilities can introduce new requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the result

  1. Change one permission.
  2. Open the app and test a non-critical function, such as viewing vehicle status.
  3. Try the specific feature that motivated the permission, such as finding the parked vehicle or using a digital key.
  4. Record the result and the date so you can restore the setting if needed.

These are general phone controls; exact paths and available choices depend on your operating-system version.

Step 2: Review privacy and data choices in the app and account

Sign in to the companion app and the automaker’s web account. Look for sections named Privacy, Data sharing, Location, Connected services, Driving insights, Personalization, Marketing, Consent or Account settings. The same company may place controls in different screens for different countries or service tiers.

Separate collection, use and sharing

Read what each switch actually governs. A control may stop the company from collecting a category, limit how it uses information internally, or prevent onward sharing with another party. Those are different outcomes. A “personalization” switch may affect recommendations without stopping diagnostic collection needed for a repair alert.

Look for data categories

Review each category separately when the interface allows it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Precise location: Vehicle GPS coordinates, phone location or both.
  • Driving behavior: Trips, speed or acceleration patterns, braking and other usage signals.
  • Diagnostics: Fault codes, battery condition, mileage and service information.
  • App activity: Commands, screens viewed, device identifiers and timestamps.
  • Marketing and personalization: Profiles used for messages or recommendations.

Hyundai’s vehicle-technology privacy notice, for example, says covered information may include precise vehicle location and mobile-device location. FCA’s connected-services notice likewise identifies vehicle GPS and mobile-device location when consent is given. Those notices illustrate why checking both sources matters; they do not establish one universal data set for every automaker.

Review linked drivers and devices

Remove former drivers, old phones and vehicles you no longer control. If the account supports multiple profiles, check each profile’s consent and sharing choices. Changing your phone permission will not remove data already associated with another authorized account.

Step 3: Inspect privacy controls in the vehicle

Use the infotainment screen’s Settings menu and search for Privacy, Connectivity, Data sharing, Permissions, Connected services or User data. Some vehicles present these choices during initial setup; others hide them under a profile or system menu.

Ford specifically directs owners to SYNC settings to change preferences for sharing vehicle information with a mobile app or to stop using the app with SYNC. That is a make-specific path, not a general instruction for every vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the explanation beside each switch before accepting it. A vehicle-level setting can govern information generated by the car even when the phone app is closed. If the system offers separate controls for location, diagnostics, voice services and app connectivity, decide them independently instead of selecting a blanket “disable all” option.

When the vehicle has no obvious privacy menu

  1. Open the owner’s manual for the exact model year and search for “privacy,” “data,” “connected services,” “telematics” and “consent.”
  2. Check the automaker’s support site for the current infotainment instructions for your country.
  3. Ask customer support which control affects collection, which affects sharing, and which features will stop.
  4. Take a photograph or written note of the original settings before changing them.

What you may lose when a setting is disabled

Privacy controls can be useful precisely because they limit a service. The trade-off is that a dependent feature may stop working, work only when the app is open, or lose accuracy. The following matrix is a decision aid, not a promise of behavior for any particular vehicle.

Control or data category Possible effect of limiting it What to verify for your vehicle
Phone location Parking-location maps, geofencing or automatic trip context may become unavailable or less accurate. Whether the feature can use vehicle GPS instead, and whether background access is required.
Vehicle precise location Live vehicle maps, location history or some theft-recovery functions may stop. Whether emergency or safety functions are exceptions and whether the control affects collection or only sharing.
Driving-behavior data Driving scores, trip summaries or behavior-based personalization may disappear. Whether diagnostics or legally required safety records remain separate.
Diagnostics Remote fault alerts, maintenance predictions or dealer pre-checks may be reduced. Which warnings still appear on the dashboard and whether emergency notifications remain enabled.
App connectivity Remote lock, unlock, start, charging controls or status refresh may stop. Whether physical keys and in-vehicle controls continue to work normally.
Bluetooth or nearby-device access Digital key, automatic pairing or proximity detection may fail. Whether a cable or manual connection provides an alternative.

Test only after the vehicle is parked safely. Never experiment with a privacy switch while driving, and do not disable an emergency function without understanding the consequence.

Step 4: Stop using app services when you no longer need them

If you do not want app-based features, sign out, remove the vehicle from the account where the service permits it, and stop using the connected application service. This can reduce collection associated with those services, but it is not proof that the car has stopped collecting or transmitting every type of data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

General Motors’ mobile privacy statement says users can restrict specified location collection by not using its application services. The wording is important: it describes a way to limit certain collection tied to those services, not a universal shutdown of all vehicle data. Confirm the scope in the current notice for your country and vehicle.

Step 5: Use the automaker’s privacy and data-rights channel

Find the current privacy notice and data-rights page for the relevant brand and country. Look for request forms or contact methods for:

  • Accessing a copy of personal data
  • Correcting inaccurate account information
  • Deleting data where applicable
  • Withdrawing consent or changing sharing choices
  • Opting out of targeted uses or specified disclosures

Save the confirmation number, submitted choices and response. A legal right available in one jurisdiction may not apply in another, and a company’s general privacy practice is not the same as a statutory right. Ask the company to identify which vehicle, account and data categories a request covers.

A current U.S. example: the GM and OnStar FTC order

In January 2026, the FTC finalized an order concerning General Motors and OnStar. For U.S. consumers covered by that order, it requires affirmative express consent before most connected-vehicle data collection, use or sharing, subject to stated exceptions. It also provides a way to request data copies and seek deletion, requires an ability to disable precise geolocation collection where the vehicle supports it, and provides an opt-out for geolocation and driver-behavior data subject to limited exceptions. The order includes a five-year ban on certain disclosures to consumer reporting agencies.

These remedies are specific to GM/OnStar and the order’s scope. They are not a universal checklist for every automaker, country or vehicle. The FTC’s January 2025 announcement described allegations and a proposed settlement; the January 2026 final-order announcement is the source for the current order status.

How to evaluate any privacy switch

Before selecting Save, Disable or Opt out, answer five questions:

  1. Which data? Is the switch about precise location, driving behavior, diagnostics, app activity or another category?
  2. Which layer? Does it apply to the phone, the vehicle, the manufacturer account or a connected-service provider?
  3. What action? Does it stop collection, limit use, prevent onward sharing or merely remove personalization?
  4. What exceptions? Are emergency, safety, legal or fraud-prevention uses retained?
  5. What stops? Which named features will no longer work, and can you test them safely?

If the screen does not answer these questions, obtain clarification from the owner’s manual, current privacy notice or customer support before changing the setting.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

The app still shows location after phone location was denied

The vehicle may have its own GPS, or the account may be displaying a previously stored position. Check vehicle-level location and connected-service controls, then ask the automaker how long cached location remains and whether deletion is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote start stopped working

Restore only the permission or service required for remote start, if you are comfortable doing so. Check Bluetooth, location and account connectivity separately rather than re-enabling every permission. Some vehicles require the connected-service subscription itself, so a phone setting alone may not restore the command.

Driving insights remain after disabling personalization

Personalization and driving-data collection can be separate controls. Re-read the data-category descriptions and look for a driving-behavior or trip-history choice. Ask whether existing history is deleted or merely excluded from future recommendations.

You cannot find a delete or opt-out button

Use the brand’s privacy or data-rights contact channel instead of relying on an in-app toggle. State your country, vehicle identification details, account email and the exact categories you want accessed, deleted or excluded. Keep a copy of the request.

A feature fails after a vehicle privacy change

Return to the recorded settings, re-enable one control, and test while parked. If the feature returns, you have identified a dependency. Decide whether the convenience is worth that data flow, and ask support whether a narrower setting exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions that cannot be answered generically

No single guide can supply exact button-by-button instructions without the vehicle make, model, model year, country and companion app. Those details determine the available controls, names, legal rights, retention periods and feature consequences. Treat manufacturer documentation for your configuration as authoritative, and recheck it after major app or infotainment updates.

A practical order of operations

  1. List the connected features you want to keep.
  2. Review and reduce phone permissions, testing after each change.
  3. Open the app and web account to adjust location, driving, diagnostics, personalization and sharing choices.
  4. Inspect the vehicle’s privacy and connectivity menus, including profile-specific settings.
  5. Read the feature warnings and confirm what will stop before saving.
  6. Sign out or stop using application services if you no longer need app features.
  7. Submit access, deletion, consent-change or opt-out requests through the current privacy channel.
  8. Record the final settings and revisit them after updates, a vehicle handoff or a change in connected-service enrollment.
