On Facebook, choose the audience for each post; on Instagram, make the account private so only approved followers can see posts; on X, protect posts so only approved followers can view them. Then check location details, tags, and any cross-posted version separately.
Choose the right audience on each platform
These controls work differently: Facebook has a per-post audience selector, while Instagram and X use follower approval. “Friends-only” therefore does not mean the same thing on all three services.

Set the audience before publishing
Facebook: choose Friends on the post
- Start composing the post that mentions your trip.
- Open the audience selector shown on that post and choose Friends or a narrower option if one is available.
- Check the selector again before publishing. Do not assume a profile-wide preference governs every post type: posts, stories, reels, followers, and profile or tagging controls are distinct. Meta’s Privacy Checkup and audience-selector guidance can help you review who can see what you share; Facebook also describes privacy controls in its privacy settings help.
If you post on someone else’s profile, that person controls the post’s audience. Meta also notes that people tagged in a post may see it along with their friends. Avoid tagging travel companions unless that wider potential audience is acceptable.
Instagram: use a private account
Instagram’s relevant boundary is account privacy: a private account requires approval of new followers, so posts are visible to approved followers rather than to a fixed list of offline friends. Review your follower list before posting travel plans. The available source guidance does not establish a current menu path, so use Instagram’s live account settings rather than relying on an assumed sequence of taps.

X: protect your posts
- Open Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging.
- Turn on Protect your posts.
- Review your approved followers before sharing trip dates or details.
X says protected posts can be viewed only by approved followers. Its instructions are in the X Help Center.
Check location and travel clues separately
Restricting an audience does not itself disable location sharing. X says post location is off by default and must be opted into; when precise location is enabled for an in-app camera post, it can include both a chosen place label and the device’s precise coordinates. Check the app’s location controls and your device permissions, and avoid adding a location label unless you need it. See X’s post-location guidance.

Travel details can also be exposed through more than a location tag. The Australian eSafety Commissioner advises limiting information about where you are or what you are doing, checking whether photo or video metadata could reveal location, and asking others not to post or tag location-revealing content about you. Apply that advice to companions’ posts as well as your own; see its online safety checklist.
- Avoid posting dates or details that reveal when your home will be empty.
- Consider waiting until you have left a location—or returned home—before sharing updates from the trip.
- Remember that friends and followers can share content onward; audience settings reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that a viewer will not pass it along.
Verify cross-posts at the destination
Check the audience on each service where a post appears. When a reel is shared from Instagram to Facebook, Instagram followers and Facebook friends may not be the same people, and the Facebook audience can differ. Facebook provides an audience choice for reels and a default audience setting, so inspect the audience on the Facebook version rather than assuming Instagram’s setting carries over.
